Thanks for your honesty. The problem I’m having is I just bought a new house and the previous owner really neglected the st Augustine. I’m told he didn’t cut for two weeks at a time, for years. Now I have what seems to be really bad thatch or dead material under some of my turf. I’m told I shouldn’t dethatch, however it looks really bad I have almost 1.5” in some areas. I don’t know if I should use a liquid thatch remover, scalp the lawn, or use a dethatcher. Any advice would help. Thanks!
1.5 inches is a lot of buildup and that is at the point where you usually need to dethatch. I usually do not suggest that, but that is a lot of build up. You could also try to use a liquid thatch remover as you said. I use Revive, which is used as a dethatcher and aerator. I put out a video on it if you want to watch. When you aerate your lawn, you allow more oxygen into the soil, which helps break down thatch. I would not suggest scalping the lawn, just use a dethatcher, or the liquid, or you can even rake it out or manually with your hands try to remove the worst of it; but you definitely need to do something b/c it will inhibit the rest of your lawn. In regard to the mowing, it seems like you know you should mow every week, so doing that will help over time.. I am sure you probably have weeds in the lawn from them not mowing enough. I bought the image weed killer for southern lawns I applied it like 4 days ago and nothing happened, I only applied it on the weeds , how much do I apply? I look at the bottle and still kind of full , I may not be applying the correct amount, any suggestions?
Yeah every weed killer is different and you have to learn how much to use. This one you have to use more of it than others, which I actually like because it’s harder to hurt your grass. You just need to apply more and just get used to how much you need to use. I’m trying to think how long I spray, maybe 3 seconds on the weed but I guess I don’t pay that much attention to how long, I’m just used to it. If you still don’t have any luck let me know... I’m going to buy Spectracide which is stronger and other people have mentioned wanting to know if it is safe so I’m going to try it out soon.
