Electric fans not working on A/C air conditioning

  • A short talk on why and when the electric fans turn on in car air conditioning. Also why the clutch may not engage. This car is a 2003 Dodge Caravan SE. The air conditioning fans were not turning on and thus the air con system was over heating. This is the simple trick that fixed the issue.

I always thought that turning on the a/c compressor activate the radiator fan at the same time. Thanks for showing that it is the pressure sensor that turns on the a/c fan!

Simply AWESOME!!! I don't know how many searches I've done to fix this van, but this one did it! Similar to your case, it all started with the compressor seizing up. Replaced it, recharged. No cool, over 300 psig on high side with less than 20 psig on low side. Replaced receiver/drier, front expansion valve, and spent a few days removing/replacing the rear expansion valve. No cool, same pressure imbalance. During last recharge the fans turned on and the high side dropped below 100 psig. Found this masterpiece and thought for sure I was going to have to pull the system down and replace the switch. Tried pulling connector off and re-connected, condenser fan came on and I was able to charge the system, hello COOL air! Thanks a million.

I always knew there was a switch that told the system whether there is enough Freon for the compressor to come on (so it doesn't run dry), had an experience once where I had to bridge the switch in order to get Freon in so there would be enough! However, I had no idea there was a switch for the fans, always thought those were temperature controlled. Thanks for the info.

I have the same thing when I turn on the AC , fans don't come on along with it, 1998 Oldsmobile intrigue, relays are good. AC wasn't working, it was a bad hp sensor. Replaced it and the clutch started working, I put some refrigerant but it was still hot air coming out of vents. Now I bought a kit to vacuum the system, and recharge it. Hopefully after this procedure it will work. But still no idea why fans don't work. Maybe it's not detecting enough freon? I don't know

Thanks a million. I think I have the same issue with my cooling fans which really affect my aircon. I switch on aircon and fans dont come on, but I noticed something, when splash some water on the condenser for a while then the fans kick on. Is there a relation between water I pour on condenser, condenser and fans?
I saw a video long time ago giving the same solution, I think I should give it a try and the high pressure switch is of a vew dollars.

Hmmm? I'm wondering about your conclusion that the AC high pressure switch turns on the cooling fans. I've been looking at a lot of info and TH-cam videos to solve my own similar problem on a Ford Focus. What I've learned is that the two AC pressure switches (high and low pressure) serve one function - to cycle the AC compressor on and off as needed. According to the info I'm reading it's the AC relay switch that turns on the AC system initially including the fan #2 that cools the AC condenser. Am I wrong? It's okay if I am. I'm glad that your cleaning that connection seemed to solve your problem, though I don't know why. :-)

I got a 09' 300 2.7 that blew the OEM Radiator. Swapped it out and the fans wouldn't come on? Turns out A/C has a coolant leak, possibly bad O-ring? All the parts are new, new radiator, new relays, new temp sensor, fans still won't come on? So I'm guessing that the A/C system pressure sensor isn't kicking the fans on because it's not reading positive pressure, even when the system is running? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks. Having similar issues. The Hyundai dealer said my Sonata radiator / AC condenser fan was bad...repair price: $569.00. I said nope and I installed a new fan assembly from Amazon. My cost $174.00. Did that fix the issue? NO! So, I'm looking to see why my brand new AC condenser fan speed won't ramp up when I'm stopped/idling at a light. My AC was putting out 45F degree air when the car was moving...so the compressor is good and the engine isn't overheating...but as soon as I stop my car...the AC air temp starts rising and will eventually be the same as the ambient air. (engine temps remain normal)

Thathe high pressure switch is indeed the one that does turns the fan on. I found that all three wires there were peeled off and touching. It might have burned the switch off.

When the fans weren’t working, did the AC immediately start blowing ambient temp/warm air, or did it start off cold like it should be and then get warmer? I just installed a whole new AC system in my car it had been deleted in... just missing the fan.... When I get the clutch to engage it doesn’t even try to blow cold air.... just hot Texas air.... wondering if that’ll get fixed when I put the fan in.

Hi brother thanks for your videos I'm a subscriber.
    Question please...
    I have a 1995 Lexus LS 400.
The radiator fan is not activating.
It does work because i tested it.
I disconnected the connector that's connected to the ac receiver drier and the radiator fan turns on and stays on continuously the whole time.
But when I reconnect the connector the radiator fan turns off.
I'm trying to fix the fan so that it turns on when I turn on my air conditioner but the fan does not turn on when I turn on the AC.
I feel like it has something to do with that connection but I'm not sure.
Do you think I might have a bad sensor that's connected to the receiver drier?
    Thanks.
    Anybody knowledgeable please reply soon.

So I have a similar issue.....could this be the answer?
Hello everyone! My daughter's A/C quit working on her 2010 Corolla S, 1.8L. Took it to the shop and it turned out to be the blower motor control switch inside the car. Replaced it with OEM part, and everything was working fine. However, when the A/C is turned on, the radiator *cooling* fan does NOT engage, therefore causing high pressure in the system. It DOES turn on when the A/C is OFF, when the car gets up to operating temperature. The shop is stumped, and he has been a reliable mechanic for 30 years. Was thinking it could be the High Pressure switch, but does not want to run the A/C too long to avoid damage to the system.
Any idea what it could be? All relays have been checked and they are good. The Corolla has only one fan, but it has a high speed for AC then low speed, to keep the car at the appropriate operating temp. Please help!
