This is the sound of being in the back seat of my family’s 1981 Volvo, going on a road trip somewhere. I hated this smooth jazz stuff as a kid, and now the intense nostalgia brings me to tears.

Morning dance was part of my soundtrack when I escaped West Texas and tapped into the hip scenes in Santa Fe, Albuquerque and then wonderful Tucson with a busty, green-eyed longhaired beauty who became my wife.

I had the honor of seeing Spyro Gyra perform in concert many years ago in Memphis, TN, along with David Sanborn!! One of the best shows ever!! Great memories I will cherish forever!!

What happened?
Summer of 1979 kid of 13 spent my summer in the golden beaches of West Cork Ireland sunny days and one of the classics from that summer chill out sounds of SPYRO GYRA "Morning Dance" years later got to see them @ CORK Jazz Festival 2019 brought back those carefree memories of '79 classic 😎✌️👍.😊

In Jamaica as a kid they would play it on the radio and could never get it out of my head. I never gave up looking for this song, besides having such a challenging year this is a true blessing...

"Morning Dance" by Spyro Gyra was the first used CD I bought at an indie music store called Hungry Ear in the 1980's. The bright and lively music on this CD set me on a path to new and used music CDs at indie music stores and Syro Gyra fandom.;)

I worked in a factory make vinyl hand bags back in the late seventies when this song would play on my boombox- public radio -FM.

I helped it go gold! I bought this album as soon as I heard it back in '79 ( thank you, WRVR, in NYC back in the day!) I memorized every solo and riff, and can still play the sax solo...loved this groove from the get go!

brilliant darron i have a similar memories but mine was waking up to go to work at 6 am the sun was shinning through my bedroom window and this came on the radio just as my mother who knew i had to get up early for work came in with a nice cup of tea ,perfect a great tune !

At the time their "Morning Dance"was at position #33 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, two weeks earlier it had peaked at #24 {for 2 weeks} and it spent fifteen weeks on the Top 100...
And on July 22nd, 1979 "Morning Dance" peaked at #1 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart...
The Buffalo, NY band had three other Top 100 records, "Shaker Song" {#99 in 1978}, "Catch The Sun" {#68 in 1980}, and "Cafe Amore" {#77 in 1981}...
Band leader and co-founder Jay Beckenstein celebrated his 68th birthday four months ago on May 14th, 2019...
Sadly, three members of the band have passed away, bassist Jim Kurzdorfer {1947 - 2011}, drummer Ted Reinhardt {1953 - 2015}, and vibraphone & marimba player David Samuels {1948 - 2019}...
May all three R.I.P.

This song converted me to Jazz at age 12 in 1979 and I've never looked back since. You can listen to every instrument in isolation and enjoy it. Today, all the instruments play the same beat and you get bored after listening to it once. You can never get bored listening to this 20X a day. Just brilliant.

My grandfather used to listen to this I was told and he was a big jazz fan so am I i never got a chance to meet him but one day I will have the chance to sit up in heaven with him in a jazz club and just talk all night long!!!

This song reminds me of going down to the beach in south Texas at South Padre Island around the time this song came out. I remember the song circulating on the airwaves when I was 10 years old. Reminds me of the sand and the sunshine and the palm trees and the nice times in the 70s, Enjoy!
Totally forgot this was the hit that first brought the group's unforgettable name to my attention, but like someone commented below, I instantly remembered every twist and turn in it. Must have been on the radio constantly in its prime. Fun to hear it again, love the steel drum in there, but wow, did this hit fall off all the radio playlists since the early 1980s!

I was about 23 when Morning Dance was first released. I had the album. I haven’t thought about this recording in years. I am now 67 years old, recovering from a recent hip replacement. Thinking about listening to something that will cheer me up in the morning. Morning Dance flashed through my mind. It still works as an inspirational pick me up. Thank you for posting.
