I bought this record upon its release. It was lost in time. I was overjoyed to recover it on this forum. It has always brought peace on stormy days and unbridled joy on fantastic days. I thank the members of this band. I pray that your lifes received the pleasure and reassurance that you gave me for almost 50 years and whatever I have left.

Memories of my late good friend and ex classmate Charles Muregerera who would come to visit me on those sunny Saturdays and we would spend the day playing vinyl records all day with this one as one of our favorites. Those were the mid-80z and we were young men in our early 20z. RIP Charles.

My mother passed away in January of 2021. It was a Saturday. I woke up and peeped in on her to see if she was still awake, because she was battling dementia, and a few urinary tract infections. That morning, I popped in this CD and went to work, and this song came on, then I get a text to come back home because my mom had passed away, so this song has a lot of meaning to me. I'm so happy that this band came about years ago, and made such a beautiful song, and it compliments my mother. Life has been so sweet since my mom has left physically, but mentally, she hasn't left, so thanks to Spyro gyra for making something years ago, and still applies to every day life.👍👍👍💟👍💟💟👍💟

I grew up listening to Spyro Gyra starting with Morning dance, and buying all of their albums through the 1980s. It's over 40 years later and they still sound fresh, invigorating and relevant. Just hearing these old tracks brings back a flood of memories. I wish i could leave this dark period of time with so much hatred, division and intolerance and go back to those simpler times when all we had were good friends, good memories and great music.

"Catch the Sun" came out when I was a Sophomore in high school--and sitting "second chair" in the sax section, playing "second alto". I fell in love with your music, and "ripped" tons of riffs off your albums for Jazz band. Over the next three years, I bought every album you had available--going back for the first two, and then Carnaval, Freetime, Ingognito. Wow. You just keep getting better and better.
They all just blew my mind as a young saxophonist, and the bouncy, bright, cool, smooth energy you put out through your music helped me keep my sanity through the turmoils of high school. We won State Jazz Band Champions my Senior Year (I'd finally made it to "First Chair") and your melodies were in my headphones (Remember the Sony Walkman?) on every bus trip the band took, both for Jazz competitions and Marching Band too.
Your music kept my heart light, my mind clear, my toes tapping, and my fingers itching to slide over the pearls of my beloved King Marigaux. You were an integral part of my teen-age years, and a fundamental part of my development as a musician--and as a leader in our band organizations.
Thanks for the years of inspiration! I wouldn't be the man I am today--strong, confident, sensitive, creative, and positive--without your wonderful melodies...

@@Ewerb7 Smooth jazz has been snooZZZe jazz since the late 90s. Pickings are slim for quality modern jazz. I was listening to 70s and 80s Japanese jazz fusion and that stuff blows away any of the stuff the jazz stations play now.
Grover Washington Jr is likely rolling in his grave as the genre he helped create got turned into soulless, repetitive, commercialized noise. Acid jazz is probably the last form of modern jazz not totally contaminated. That and Latin jazz, although Bossa Nova isn't in vogue now.

I was a high school trumpet player in 79 in Texas. I convinced my friends to do a road trip to Austin to see these guys in the old Armadillo, which is gone now. Jay let me play a set with the group. He slapped my back and said good job kid. My jazz band did some Spyro Gyra at the state jazz band competition. The judges were all messed up. What, no Big Band tunes? That was funny. Jay was a fantastic guy. He really encouraged the young people to get out and do their thing.

Besides loved loved local bands, especially if played anywhere near the uptown college and universities district. I remember one my roommates and I loved, called "The Sheiks". Lead singer wore long scarves head coverings giving theme to the name of the band. All the girls liked him, and he liked the girls. We were groupies too for a while. Just loved live performances, and could dance, and usually no cover charges. Money from drinks.

Ah!!

In 1992 I walked into a National Record Mart, anyone remember those?, and this was playing in the store. I asked Jo what is the name of that? Then I said I’ll take it. Never regreted buying this album.

fell in love with them when I saw them live at (if memory serves me correct) a free Concert in the Parks in Kansas City, Missouri WAY back before they rebuilt Brush Creek at the Plaza. Or...maybe I saw them at Volker Park concert venue... didn't matter where! It's been love ever since! ❣👍

Listening to this makes me wonder... Why does smooth jazz get such hate, when tunes like this, are so beautiful?

    • @carlclarke5351
      @carlclarke5351 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I wouldn’t say “hate” but misunderstood! Jazz is varied; smooth jazz, funk jazz, fusion, hard bop, etc. so many are not familiar with this...so they don’t appreciate this genre and sub-genre of music 🎶

Because it's usually not very good, artistically. This song, for instance, lack an expressive red thread. Its different parts or themes sound glued togehter for no apparent reason. There are exceptions though, like the fantastic Pat Metheny group, Al Jarreau, Randy Crawford, even some of Yellow Jacket's output, and so on.

'm a big fan. These guys play with a great feel for the groove. The saxophone is so lyrical with a warm sound. The arrangements are superb. This music never dates. It sounds as fresh as ever. I live in Melbourne, Australia. Spare a thought for me. The music pumping out of the PA systems in public spaces, every shop and every motor car here is a loud THUMP! THUMP! THUMP! or DOOF! DOOF! DOOF! Why can't it be this sort of music?

Wow. Not heard this since I was a young kid. We grew up pretty poor and I used to play mums records and sit looking at the album art. This was one of them. We got a tape deck and I recorded a compilation of things I liked from her albums. At 7 years old my taste was quite haphazard. This was on it, along with U2, Beethoven, Paul Simon and Elaine Page.
