Old School Gassers & More - Eagle Field Drags - Speed & Chrome Illustrated

- Eagle Field is a WWII U.S. Army Air Corps training facility, or used to be during the war. Today there is a small museum and a few military vehicles around the property. There are also a few vintage airplanes as well as you can see from the cover of our new DVD. Three years ago Rocky Phillips had an idea, to bring together other like minded hot rodders and recreate what was the norm back in the 50’s, racing on runways. Well, his idea spread like wild fire and now, three years later, thousands of people show up to race and watch what has become one of the most unique events in the world. The May event is spread over two days with the first day being called the Fresno Dragways and the second, Lions Drag Race. An homage if you will to those former tracks.
What has been called an outlaw racing event because it is done on a non NHRA sanctioned track, has become the place to run your vintage hot rod, muscle car or nostalgia front engined dragster. Running on the 8th mile runway, remember it’s a runway not a race track has its challenges, but that's what makes it fun right? For those of us who were not around in the 50’s and early 60’s to experience this first hand, this is the second best thing. This is a great opportunity to see, feel and smell the nitro, hi-octane fuel and burnt rubber in the air, at a truly historical location.

Takes me back to my youth. Much more into sports car road racing the past 20 to 39 years but still love the old school drag cars. Kudos to all the guys who have saved and race these cars.

Ps, I love it old school. And I like when all the cars are old school. New muscle has its place in our world, but love see'n old cars beat new ones.

131 in Martin, MI has a few crop dusters do fly overs during Funny Car Nationals in September. Lots of nostalgia shit running too.

Went there several years ago with friends, was a good time. Track is old runway and there is all most no track prep so high horsepower cars have a hard time making it stick. Track is the equalizer. Was a good time people are here for the fun.
Although in the uk there are folks trying to bring back the old spirit of drag racing we do not have as much heritage or places to do it as you guys in the states, I love to see these style events, I imagine its like the old grass roots, but with 2000's approaches to safety (which is why the NHRA was born after all). Power to you guys keep the old roots growing (?!?). its awesome to watch especially the flatties and the Gassers.

@@SpeedandChromeTV I have a 1963 Studebaker Lark. Being done a bit more altered than gasser. has a 427 BBC with Hilborn mech. Inj...on ALCOHOL,,,,and this looks like a place I would die to go to!!!

If you ever come out bring SHADE the only shade you get is way far back or from the track or other peoples popups.

That flathead with the moon rims looks like it will go thers a quite a few willys one of my favorite cars that black one moves how long is this track yeh trailer trash is awesome these to me look more period correct than the south west gassers or whatever they are south east one of the two
Track is 8th mile, its actually a runway not an actual race track so the traction is very limited, which makes driving it much harder. Lot of slippage going on.

do these guys run straight off the can or have to run tranmissions?
Not sure what you mean by can. I think the gasser class has to run a manual trans. But, the event as a whole you can run whatever you want to. Certain classes have specific criteria. Hope that answers your question.
