This can't keep happening to the Phoenix Suns.
This is the fifth time this decade Phoneix has faced off against the San Antonio Spurs in the postseason and the Spurs have packed them up nearly every time. But tonight, tied at 115 in double overtime with little time to play, Phoenix has the chance to steal Game One on the road and set the tone for the series. As San Antonio's Manu Ginobili barrels toward the rim, all they need is a stop.
But how the hell did we end up in double OT in the first place? With so much history between these teams, the Suns going through a new transformation adding Shaq this season, and a wild back-and-forth game with highly unpredictable moments... we're gonna have to rewind.

Timmy's 3 was cold blooded. Always so much respect for the Big Fundamental.
The only other 3 I think he made in playoffs was the 1 b4 d fish hit the unthinkable .4 shot wasn't it if I can remember correctly I was the biggest spurs fan back then on edge of my seat every game lol everybody thought they was boring but I loved it nvr knew how games were gonna turn out in the end. I was always at my dads watching da finals over the summer great memories.
Dang. Another rewinder episode with a Suns heartbreaker. They can’t catch a break
F*** the suns
The Lakers led the whole West at 57-25. Suns were 55-27 this year. They were the SIX seed. I can’t believe this team got stuck with a 1st round matchup against the defending champion instead of a halfass playoff team
i'm sure "giannis game 4 block on deandre ayton deserves a deep rewind" will be coming in the near future😭
@marcusmcgraw3519 I think the old rule for standings is that whoever wins their division will be at the top of the standings.
@@onnejbenigay5208 it is. In addition, the division winners cannot be seeded lower than 4. Utah was only 54-28, but cuz they won the Northwest Division, they grabbed the 4 seed over both Houston and Phoenix. I’ve never seen a West as competitive as this year was. And Phoenix got shafted cuz of it, despite being a top 5 team in the entire league
I'm always here for some more Manu recognition
Spurs fans act like Duncan was a one man show. When the game was on the line Manu had the ball, not Timmy.
@@latinoheateddieguerrero7644Eddie is overrated AF bro
@@latinoheateddieguerrero7644 uhh…. Because Tim was the greatest PF of all time and the anchor for the team…. Real spurs fans know Manu was the Not so Secret Weapon of the team.
@@Evs78101we already knew we could trust Timmy in defensive moments. But Manu always came up clutch when Duncan had to cover the paint
@Evs78101 the most overrated player everbyou mean
Nash’s stats would be so crazy in todays game. Dude was a sniper that did not shoot enough
I remember him having 99 3 point shooting in NBA Live 09
Without a doubt one of the greatest game I’ve ever watched. That Duncan 3 lives rent free in my head.
Finally….Manu Ginobili gets some love on Secret Base. Glad I was alive to see his entire pro career with the spurs. They don’t make players like him anymore… guys who attack the basket with pure disregard for their own safety
My guy they made a Ginobili prism video and he's appeared in rewinder before. WDYM he's finally getting some love? They've been loving him here.
I see Manu on the title, I click on the video, Simple life
People talk about how the Spurs' system benefited certain guys. Not for Ginobili. His career was limited by the system, in contrast to Tony Parker who is a HOF player because of the system. Ginobili's skill on both sides of the court eclipsed Parker. His competitiveness is up there with Kobe/Jordan. Yet history will likely view Manu/Parker as near equals, perhaps favoring Parker.
Manu was an elite playmaker and clutch scorer who always went hard on defense. Even though he had a lot of miles on him (pro ball at an early age + tons of minutes on the national team), there's still no justification for the minutes restrictions he had from Pop for most of his career. He could've done far more. It's why he seriously considered an offer to leave the Spurs for the Nuggets.
If you have a chance, go back and watch him during the 2010-11 season. It was the one prime year where he was in the starting lineup AND the #1 option on offense. Watch his matchups with Kobe that year and you can see how elite Ginobili was. You will see that he was far far better than people credit him.
True, he was clutch as hell than any of hus teammates, wasnt credited that much for this. He may be a sixthman, but he was the best man a countless times in their games
Ginobili could've been a franchise player on other teams
I agree. The thing was that Manu was injury prone. Durability was not his thing. If you put prime Manu on the mid 2000s Wizards, I see a couple of 50 win seasons, All-Star selections, All-NBAs but also lots of missed time. It's common consensus among Spurs staff that Manu was not built for an 82 game season. He needed to protected from himself. Better to shine longer as a candle than burst brilliantly like lightning.
@@JeewanthaBandara wow, beatiful comparison
I'm so happy that season existed - I think that was the only year Manu was given the driver's seat and was starting. By 2012 / 2013 the keys to the offense transitioned to TP.
I will always remember that drive and score by ginobili. The way he faked initial drive, hung in the air for the layup. Perfect way to end that game. Timmy is the Soul, Ginobili is the heart.
These videos going to be 90% ad space soon at this rate
Been a Spurs fan for around 20 years now, ever since I started watching basketball. I still remember watching this game, it was absolutely insane.
Yeah Manu used to give me near heart attacks over the years
Manu, Duncan and Parker were the last vestige of perfect fundamentals, they were boring and exciting at the same time.
Boring cu they were highly eff??
Who wouldn't want to watch a Manu crash&burn he still made the basket drive or how fast TP could break the D.
Or Manu dunking
Workmanlike swag. Lunch pail sauce.

Duncan and Parker were boring, Manu was exciting
Man, I will alwayd feel bad for Steve Nash. That man deserved a ring. Most underrated point guard of all time.
John Stockton is underrated. Nash is overrated.
@@latinoheateddieguerrero7644 Nash is among the Top 10 greatest offensive players of all time. Stockton was a regular season statpadder whose performance declined every time playoffs came around.
pretty hard to call a 2 time MVP underrated. off the top of my head, rondo is the most underrated PG.
@@pranavarora9976top ten? He’s literally my favorite player and I’d argue top ten. Kareem, Magic, MJ, Luka, Lebron, KD, AI, Kyrie, Melo, Steph, Shaq, Kobe, Tim Duncan, Dirk, Harden like come on. @@latinoheateddieguerrero7644lol, a guy who was always a candidate for the 50-40-90 club is overrated? How many players in the league could shoot that well, at the same time be on the top 10 assists ranking year after year. You don't know your basketball
This was probably my favorite suns era! Watching them every week. And heartbreak every year.
The Spurs had SO many resurgences....I forget they're winning championships in late 90s, then in the aughts, and then back again in the mid-2010s; they just would not go away (until the whole Kawhi thing); they'll definitely be back
Nothing like a Secret Base ad and BK ad for the Secret Base BK video.
As a Piston’s fan, the Spurs are the only team a Detroit team has lost to in a Championship series that I don’t totally despise.
that 2005 series was bonkers!
Trying not to be bias myself, but one of the biggest things I took pride in as a fan was their unpopular combination of dominance and class. Usually teams had either one or the other, seldomly both. With this big 3, it was just different. It would’ve been hard for me to hate them if I was a rival fan.

Beef History: Suns vs SB Nation errrr Secret Base
Spurs fan here. I watched this game live on TV. Even though the Spurs were down most of the game, I just remember distinctly that I wasn't worried. I think it was because they Spurs didn't look worried. They were composed, not panicking. It might also have something to do with their regular season matchups. They Spurs always seemed to have the Suns' numbers.
Duncan himself said that they never worried about playing a Mike D'Antoni team because he never adjusted ever (I really mean ever), and he always just ran the same plays at the same time in the same way in every game. As a result, the Spurs knew what was coming and they could easily adjust even with the Suns deep level of talent. He also explained the Spurs lost in 2010 to the Suns because Alvin Gentry said "You know, maybe we should adjust as the game goes on and change our plays from game to game?", and as a result the Spurs didn't know what the Suns would do, so finally the Suns could actually beat them. Raja Bell and Shawn Marion both confirmed everything Duncan said as true after he said it.
So overall, D'Antoni should take all the blame for the Suns losing.

The Spurs were the best team when they had the Big Three of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker.
They would win four NBA championships (2003, 2005, 2007, 2014) during that time-span.
Each member of the Big Three has had their jersey retired by the Spurs and all three have been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Saw an interview earlier this month with a guy who worked in the Suns front office during that time.
He said the reason Phoenix didn’t defend Tim Duncan on that 3 pointer to tie was nobody on the team believed if Duncan was behind the 3 point line he wasn’t going to hit anything
I remember staying up late on a school night watching this. I have never yelled louder than when Duncan hit the three and woke my parents up
Here I am, a Suns fan just minding my own business and no championships and Secret Base just coming along, first throwing dirt on me last week then hitting me in the head with a shovel this week.
This was one of my first Spurs games I went to after moving to the city. Still remember how loud the SBC Center was while being in the nosebleeds for that game. My mom bought me a Ginobili jersey in the fan store right after this. The tickets were only like $8 at the time for the nosebleeds if I remember correctly too which is also crazy to think about
To this day, my favorite NBA game of all-time.
Y'all taking me down memory lane today with this one 🔥
I really wanted to see those Suns win a championship. They were so damn fun to watch.

As a suns fan I’m BEGGING you lol, stop making me live through this trauma over and over
Lovin' the respect and recognition the Old School Spurs are getting in this video.
I loved this Suns team, but Manu....Manuuuuu 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
I know this was 'only game one' but this dealt the most emotional and psychological damage for the Suns on that series. Great stuff.
I'm a simple man. I see my Spurs, I like.
Main topic aside, Duncan could have had a higher 3-point shooting percentage had he wanted or the game needed him to. He was a terrific mid range shooter many times close to the three point line. Unlike many other Centers/Forwards he had good shooting mechanics. But the game of the era didn't require him to be a three point shooter and he was a beast inside. That play was set up exactly because nobody was expecting Timmy to be behind the three point line, but clear Pop and company knew he was capable.
Could have Duncan developed into an elite three point shooter? Probably not, but had the game required more of him far from the basket we likely would have seen he was a much more consistent 3-point shooter than people imagined.
If you can go left you can get almost anything you want. Manu was a master going left
That Tim shot is underrated among big playoff shots. Keep spreading the gospel!

Painful childhood growing up in AZ as a suns and cardinals fan
Nash is a modern day Jerry west to me - successful career without ever winning it all, but regularly came up clutch / played out of his mind in the playoffs (particularly his suns tenure)
Obvs not perfect comparison since west eventually won one

Ugh. I watched this game with a bunch of friends at one's house. Being Wolves fans, we all hated the Spurs and were cheering on the Suns. When Duncan hit that 3 the house got quiet. We all knew the game, even the series, was over at that moment, even if the clock didn't know it yet.

The Suns dominated early in this game.
SA caught up through "Hack-A-Shaq."
The Spurs exposed the Suns by choosing Shaq taking FTs, ruining the "seven seconds or less" mantra.
Shaq was acquired so defend Tim come Playoffs, despite the lineup with Shawn Marion seems viable. IIRC, the Suns were 2-1 before the trade; 3-1 overall. Turned out Pop is saving the ploy should they meet in the Playoffs.

Where is this with the Knicks/Heat 97 suspensions? Everybody forgets about that one when we had a 3-2 lead, split the season series with the bulls, Patrick was still Patrick, and LJ still had some Charlotte LJ in him. We had so many suspensions we had to split them over games 6-7, and the heat got to play a ridiculously short handed team because Ewing, Starks, Houston, LJ, and ward were suspended for Pj brown literally throwing ward, she the other guys stepped slightly onto the floor. Absolute horseshit
I’ll never understand why that series doesn’t get a deep rewind, especially considering it kicked off the Knicks heat rivalry that went to an elimination game for 4 straight years and was probably the best team a prime Ewing played on.
