It really is man. From someone who formed a group and started playing after watching the CR and AI videos, the ability to watch a DM masterclass each week is invaluable for anyone trying to understand how to run and/or play in a game, and in general what this game can be.
Hugh Mungus absolutely. I’m a new DM, about six months in, never been a PC, and I have learned so much from Matt Mercer, both by watching CR and by watching his tips videos. Not just learned by the way, I’ve been hugely entertained by it - my wife and I often watch this content instead of the telly!

It's sad how Matt undersells himself here. Not saying people didn't help him and not saying that was not crucial. But We know Matt is an incredible driven man and hard worker, and I can't even imagine the amount of work he put into all of this. Sure little nudges for outside were important. But he really should realize how much he has to thank his own hard work and passion for this.

Yes and No, there is a limit to everything. Once in a while you should take a step back and realize what you have achieved. Also for your own sake. Arrogance is bad, but one can be proud about things he legitemately achieved.
What I like most about Critical Role is how the players and the DM all CARE so much. too often, a game can to too focused on mechanics and gameplay and style and oftentimes forgets the narrative, the roleplaying aspect that separates D&D and other TRPGs from video games. You, as a player, have a direct influence over the world, rather than simulating a pre-programmed story. And it is that aspect of the game that Critical Role has done an immensely good job at keeping alive and it is that aspect of Matthew that has made me want to try DMing as well.
Preach! If run into very different kinds of groups and its kinda sad to see the world the DM created falling victim to "so where is the next fight ?" kinda players. Really happy to say my current group spent about 30 minutes of the about 15 hours we played so far in combat and its incredible to see how in character conversation can really create a feeling of kinship between the characters apart from "we fought all these horrible monsters together"
I just picture Molly, sitting down with Matt to have a talk about leaving the each town in a better place than it was when he arrived... and Beau standing in the doorway, behind them, the two men oblivious to the fact that she's listening in...
I gotta say, the more I listen to him, and the more i watch the show and feel like you get to know these people, i can honestly say Matt is slowly becoming one of my all-time favorite people.
Peter Warner, never have I had so much respect for someone of his age. Men twice his age fail to grow as he has. Before seeing his interviews recently, I was analyzing him. Things he said, things not said by NPCs. Reactions by his friends and himself. I must say I nailed it. He is exactly the person I judged him to be. We need more people like him.
falfires, geez episode 85 got me when Sam's Scanlin (sp?) left. I was imagining how my character would have reacted if part of the party. I was like...WTH? These guys got me in too deep!
Matthew is an inspiration. I started DM'ing early last year after starting critical role. I had started to grow apart from my closest two friends after having a child and starting a business. I felt in ways they thought I was leaving them behind and so they preemptively started pushing me away and in turn I wasn't able to give the time needed to reassure them. After watching Matthew's video about the end of critical roll i pitched the idea to my friends and now we play about twice a month and have pulled so many other friends into it. Its something i look forward to every month and im still watching critical roll to gain inspiration.

Matt is very inspirational. As an aspiring fulltime DM (I only DM part time, as I'm a character in a current game and I don't have the time to really have my own game atm) I have a lot of respect for what he does. My current DM doesn't do his homework and it can make our group uncomfortable and disjointed at times. I feel like I am trying to learn from those mistakes, and also looking up to people like Matt and learn from his success. Thank you for everything you've done and for being an amazing example Matt!
Skilful, intelligent, kind, knowledgeable, and extremely humble, Matthew Mercer is a *good* person that inspires and provides entertainment for geeks everywhere. I hope the show goes on for many years to come and their friendship grows even stronger.
It is lovely to see Matt following in that old storytelling tradition or deeper and more entwined storylines all offering the characters multiple chances to... if they choose.. to get involved however they may, and to perhaps alter the great and lesser happenings in the world around them! Been fun so far and I am really looking forward to its continuation!
+Doelie Waaje I think the character focus is inevitable given that the party in the previous campaign had already been together for a year before the show started. They went through battles, losses and near perma-deaths, forming a bond. Now we get to see everything and I like that we, as spectators, get to know the characters at the same time as the rest of their party members do.
It's because they are in a new campaign, they have to know each others and let people know them.. the other one was in medias res, they knew each other, they have a dynamic and all..
I agree, and it doesn't help that everyone seems to have chosen the "mysterious negative past"-route Jester is lighthearted and Molly as well, btu especially jesters seems fake..or at least jsut result of her weird upbringing. I wish we had a genuine upbeat character in the group.
I think it only seems that way because of the whole open world/the world goes on in the background thing. the world is fluid thus the characters are the only grounded thing, even though there's a large number of story threads that don't involve the characters.
I can definitely tell that Matt has been going for a more "the bad people aren't bad people, they'd just people". A slightly politically focused campaign, that is the main story for that city. However, none of the characters wanted anything to do with that so they're doing thief guild side quests. Depending on how things continue to go I reckon they all just might be thieves guild blokes.
You did a lot of good, Matt. And you helped people. You certainly helped me become a better DM and storyteller. And thus gave me the power to incite a sense of wonder and excitement in my players, as you did with yours. That alone is worth a lot.

The last 24 hours has shown us that, yet again unfortunately, we shouldn't idolize celebrities because we never really know who they truly are behind closed doors. But man, I would be shocked beyond all possible imagining to hear that Matt Mercer is anything less than the absolutely wonderful and thoughtful human being he comes across as being pretty much non-stop. Even in this little clip of him discussing the new campaign he sounds like a wonderfully delightful individual.

Matt Mercer is my absolute idol as a new Dungeon Master, the astonishing level of love, passion and genuine skill that he puts into everything he does for Critical Role is just awe inspiring. There are DMs like me, then there are the good ones, then some who are really great at it. Then there’s Matt Mercer standing a cut above the rest. Watching Critical Role was what first got me into D&D and even tabletop gaming in general, in fact it’s part of the reason I want to study in game design in college. Don't worry--some dude calling themes that have been in literature for decades "Colvillian" isn't going to magically turn it into a genre. I absolutely agree that when you are really struggling you have to make a choice. For me that's a daily decision and I don't fight everyday but the days where I put my energy into my campaign or workout or really anything productive it always eases the hurt. Depression, PTSD, and anxiety hit me all the time and hearing how you worked through your struggles and something so positive came out of it really makes me feel at ease.
Also, Jesters user i.e. Laura is about to burst with a baby that Travis, a natural leader and a man, has put into her. So...no creepy Europe trash...you wont!
Long may Matt and his friends create a space and a story that is unique. Every time they do create content my viewing of anything else stops. I look forward to a Critical Role campaign more than anything else in media. I never thought a TH-cam channel would shape a large part of my social life. D&D gives me happiness! Thanks CR :)
DnD Beyond needs to step up and get public dicerolling online and maps so it can have everything. Its char sheet and books are great but those are glaring omissions in its "toolset".
because of the show Critical Role, I have seen what D&D is and am now learning to play it with new friends. Thanks Matt for sharing this with the non-gamer types.
I'd like to see like weekend long DM workshops around the country. That's not to say that we don't also need good storytellers as well, that could be a separate workshop entirely. But I'd pay to have the chance to be in a solid DM training classroom.
So in my current campaign my DM has set up a world where the country we’re in is on the brink of a giant civil war, and my party and I are caught in the middle of it. My DM is also putting A LOT of stuff from our back stories which makes the experience so much better.
Gabbrain Podcast yes! I would love to see him give it a try. I'm using the UA mystic now. But would love something closer to the psionicist from 2nd. Ed.

Critical role has officially gotten their own studio and is moving on/away from Geek and Sundry. They now control their own merchandise, and are planning new content (like Marisha's Honey Heist, etc). Not much announced yet for what all they want to do since they're still getting things set up.
If you're looking to get back into it, they're about 22~ episodes in on their new campaign, so it's a relatively good time to jump back in. New characters, new storyline, new continent- completely unrelated to the first campaign, so you aren't missing anything (except for the awesome first campaign, that is)

In my opinion this campaign focusses more on the story and background of the seperate characters instead of what the group is experiencing right now

DnD Beyond needs to step up and get public dicerolling online and maps so it can have everything. Its char sheet and books are great but those are glaring omissions in its "toolset".

I hope that his business endeavor works out well.
I'd like to see like weekend long DM workshops around the country. That's not to say that we don't also need good storytellers as well, that could be a separate workshop entirely. But I'd pay to have the chance to be in a solid DM training classroom.
If everyone took Matt's outlook for even one day per week, the world would be a much better place. Love you all.

So in my current campaign my DM has set up a world where the country we’re in is on the brink of a giant civil war, and my party and I are caught in the middle of it. My DM is also putting A LOT of stuff from our back stories which makes the experience so much better.

Critical role has officially gotten their own studio and is moving on/away from Geek and Sundry. They now control their own merchandise, and are planning new content (like Marisha's Honey Heist, etc). Not much announced yet for what all they want to do since they're still getting things set up.

If you're looking to get back into it, they're about 22~ episodes in on their new campaign, so it's a relatively good time to jump back in. New characters, new storyline, new continent- completely unrelated to the first campaign, so you aren't missing anything (except for the awesome first campaign, that is)

Yes, they still have the exact same players. Sam Riegel- he plays a rogue in the new campaign, who's just as hilarious.
