An epic Critical Role campaign for the world’s greatest roleplaying game.

Victor is our house's favorite possibly because he speaks to the child in us.

My underrated favorite is Madam Musk from C2. Just a one and done NPC but she was so CREEPY, freaked out the cast (especially Travis) so much and was just so funny. I quote that encounter to myself in the creepy voice all the time.
Tuuuumermossss... We quote her often too. No one says Xhorhas better than her/them. Really rooting for her to pop up again somewhere.

My favorite npc is "Bob the beholder", he's a beholder who speaks with a British accent, wears a bowler hat, and one big monocle. I use him in a lot of my games, and he usually owns an antique store. Which is actually a magic item shop, but he's a beholder so whenever he looks at a magic item it stops being magic and he can't tell the difference. So, whenever he buys or sells something he just thinks it's a really cool old item. He usually operates a shop in whatever city is the hub of a campaign or sometimes he has a really big wagon and goes from town to town. My players all know you can get really cheap magical items from him, but they never know what the items are going to do before they buy them. So, sometimes that 200gp ring might be a ring of frost resistance, a ring of three wishes, a cursed ring of life draining, or just a regular diamond ring. Like a slot machine, except you always win something even if it's not worth more than you spent.

Essek means a ridiculous amount to me on a an extremely personal level. Thank you Matt for creating complex evil alligned characters that are allowed to grow and change from kindness and friendship... You have no idea how many of us that needs to hear that. ❤
the amount of love matt has for gilmore is so amazing, you can really see it shine through whenever he talks about him/embodies him, it would be difficult not to love him too 🥰😭

My favourite NPC was, Zorth the goblin with the Moorbounders

there is such a genuineness in this interview that makes me smile! it’s obvious matt has a great love for his world and npcs, but such a thoughtful answer about it makes me :)
As soon as he asked the question I thought of Gilmore. He's always been a favorite of mine and Mercer seems to have so much fun role playing him. That really shines through and it elevated the performances of the others. Genius.

At the very least, he's already made cameo as an easter egg - the first time we hear Delilah chant one of her creepy chants, she says his name

Senokir doesn't get nearly as much love as they deserve
Yay! I love many of these NPCs with Victor and Pumat probably being my faves. However, Senokir was soooo... delightfully strange and awkward that I think he should be in the conversation more.
I love Arty because Matt helps embody what it means to be of fae blood. Even the most well intentioned fey have dark twisted elements.
My favorite character I’ve played is a tie between Pelius the Blue (Kobold Paladin good boy) and Fen the Satyr Druid. When I made Fen, I wasn’t planning on having him attempt to murder a child via lightning but that’s how things go.
Fen I made to embody the idea of a force of nature, god in mortal form. I took inspiration from Bacchae Dionysus with the spells and personality I took. Someone who spent most of their life entirely self centered and indulgent, tricks, pranks, and all the like. Met a child that dealt a serious blow to his view on how he’s lived, tries to do better, but is still going to choose to save himself over any stupid “righteous” thing to do.
If I could’ve altered her memory, I would’ve. But I’m not going to spare the child’s life if she intends to sell me out to the person who controls this terrible beastie that’s currently kicking our asses.

@@ChknKng In Campaign 3 Episode 12 at about 1:33:35 the party enters a curiosity/magic item shop that is literally just a large ship crammed between two other buildings.
Marwa is the early twenties young woman who runs the shop (after her father died I think??).
She’s fun and kind of all over the place with an intensity that draws the party in. Ashton particularly thinks she’s really cool but trips up when introducing themself haha

Matt really is a great dm he has realized that anything that comes from his mind is a part of him no matter how small or random and characters you like or become natural to take on are parts of you you wish you had more of a lot can be said about the friends we make in real life as well
I sometimes get nervous my players will be of put by dark scenes or promiscuous characters because i had to think them up and agree with myself that was an okay thing to show

I always get the impression he's having a really really ridiculously good time with any antagonist who gets to just throw one of the PCs in a pringles can and shake vigorously at intervals throughout a session. (Shout out to whatever the heck that was he and Taliesin were *doing* vis a vis Anna Ripley in C1.)
I love Henry Crabgrass, the tortle captain, the goblin without hands that is training monsters. Funny as hell
The Suntree in The Dawn Father's realm is still one of my favorites.

Matt as the Sun Tree was one of my favorites. I also want them to answer the question about what happened to Victor in Vasselheim.
From what I recall from the wiki, Victor died by exploding his home off screen to defeat some of Vecna's undead in the last battle of campaign 1
Sigh. That is how he would have wanted to go. Blasting his way beyond the divine gate.
There is a few that are pretty dear to me. (I am currently on Campaign 2 - just after they met with the Bright Queen to tell her of The Laughing Hand)
Orly - As someone born and raised in Louisiana, there is something about Orly that absolutely jives with me.
Pumat - All the Pumats come across as these smart but lovable oafs that always makes me smile when he shows up.
Kiri - Kiri is so sweet and innocent and every time Jester sends a message to her and she responds with that sweet heartwarming "I miss you", I can't help but "aw" along with the cast.
Victor - Victor is hands down one of the funniest NPC's to me. Matt really goes all out when in character for him and I always end up laughing until my sides hurt whenever there is a scene with him. He was one of the few NPCs that had real "character development" as the cast put it with his increasing number of missing fingers with each encounter.
I didn't know he played DnD!! He's now my new favourite person

Right now, my favorite NPC is Saw Wobble, a kenku shop owner. He helps customers find what they need by repeating their needs back to them, and pulling things that could possibly help them out of magic crates that work like bags of holding. He wears a big pink hat with a peacock feather that sticks out of it, and he really enjoys watching people do magic.
Strictly going of campaign 2 up to episode 73 and 3 current (I have to dive into campaign 1... ik I watched the animated series so I will be completing that in time). Favorite NPC so far... Lord Esterosh... as an orc to be so professional is impressive not haughty like Fjord but still a very proud distinguished individual. Makes him a great first caretaker for the party.
Victor was the best NPC of campaign one. I loved Zorth from campaign two, but we only had one interaction with him. As far as long term NPC from c2, I obviously gotta go with Pumat. And Marwa from the current campaign is the greatest NPC ever. I hope we get many more interactions with her

only watched C1 so far and I am a big fan of the weird and crazy characters like Artagan, Viktor and Senokir
but I also love the Briarwoods, they are amazing villains
My all time favourite is Victor/Viktor. Simply for the sheer glee he brought to the table and the hysterical laughing he brought to me. I would love Matt to create a short Novella about his life and death… and if ermmm… Audible could pick it up with Matt narrating it.
An NPC I use in my campaign is called Gator Bill. The players are in a town next to a river and swampy/boggy area, and Bill, as the name suggests, hunts alligators. He is a source of wilderness information for the players.
However, he named himself ‘Gator’ Bill. The running gag is that whenever he, or anyone else, says that name, a nearby person will say something like ‘no one calls you that William’ as they pass by.
On an adventure in the swamp a few weeks back and one of the players mentioned the name and I had them just about hear ‘no one calls him that’ drifting on the wind.
My favorite NPC of Matt's will always be Victor the Black Powder MErchant

Effid the Fallen - the spiderbird who had an short appearance in C3 (but I really, really hope we get to see them more). In this short scene of a conversation Matt managed to establish such a interesting personality! The voice is on point, the introduction was on point, the amount of creepyness was just right too. I love this birb sincerely.

It was a smart political choice and probably a difficult one for Matt to let go of Gilmore. I'm sure they wanted more to respect the character and were concerned about how the world would react to a white man voicing a colored character.
Gilmore is a major character, and Matt already called dibs on Sylas Briarwood.
Yes, and also, let's remember Matt is only 1 dude and the day only has 24 hours lol He has so many jobs! and I'm sure in a void he would enjoy getting to do everything, including voicing every NPC (on TLVM), but he also has to live, sleep, eat, shower.
@@Mediados So what? Matt could play 27 main characters and no one would bat an eye (Many people would be thrilled) lol, but he's too nice and want's to gainfully employ other people. (Which, is cool and smart), I still wish he was playing Gilmore though, nothing against the guy playing him, it just doesn't feel quite right so far.
Matt Mercer is such a humble guy, its exemplary. And it often feels like he is indeed sometimes roleplaying character traits he wishes he had... in non villain npcs, ofc ').
C'mon we all know Tyriok is the best npc.

Henry Crabgrass, Pumat Sol, and Gilmore are amazing as well.
Eccentricity isn't what makes a great character in my eyes, its smart dialog and retorts, especially when they're villains.
As such Sylas and Craven Edge hold a special place in a dark corner of my heart!

I liked Senokiir; he had such a distinct demeanour and voice for only being a one-off npc.
I think all dms love creating quirky merchants.
Mine is Rushabo the sword seller. Rushabo is actually from a tribe that had 0 concept of property, trade or money. Untill a travelling swordsmith happened upon them. And Rushabo was enamoured by the idea of selling something. And set off on his journey
The thing is he doesn't understand what a sword is.
Like he'll sell a cutting sword. Or a liquid sword that heals you. Or a 50 foot long sword that you can tie to things. Or a wearable sword that gives you fire resistance.
See what I mean?
He is a recurring character. And usually has some good magical gear for surprisingly good prices.
Again, this is a guy from a culture who literally had no idea about commerce. So he doesn't really know what items are worth. So he'll sell anything based on how much he feels it.
So at one time he exchanged a boots of flight for a tophat.
(But you still can't totally rip him off. He has an innate sense of magic. And can feel out powerful items. And he interprets that as how much he likes them. So he is going to charge more for powerful items, but doesn't really know it
it's like when you're asked which of your kids you love more..

Well for good guy NPC gonna have to go with my Lady Kima. Just the way she presents herself while an entire group that would rather side with a mind flayer than her and doesn't get dejected from it, love her!!
For baddie NPC though gonna have to go with Larkin/Raishan. That dragon kept me on the edge of my seat for a good few weeks and when they killed him man I cheered so hard!!
As for neutral NPC... Gonna have to go with Pumat Sol. The moment I heard his voice I fell in love with the goofball. But I also felt there was a lot more to him than met the eye. What kinda favors did he have to do for the Counsel that gave him all these helpers... That was a thread I was definitely hoping they'd fish for but never happened 💔

Gilmore in terms of a fully fleshed out character, Zorth in terms of pure entertainment.

Favorite NPC I've ever run was actually my interpretation of Jarlaxle. I've never read anything where he actually appears as a character so I gave him a new personality as a kind of comedic sociopath who was just a little too cheerful when threatening the party with torture to find the location of the Stone of Golorr. Go watch CGP Grey's video on the captain's side of pirate economics if you want to find the personality I directly imported into Jarlaxle
