Why Brawl Stars Is More Popular Than Ever

- Not too long ago, brawl stars was on a gradual decline. Looking at this google trends graph, the game reached its peak in May 2020, and over the course of a few years would hit its lowest point in August 2022. The game wasn’t looking too good, and underwhelming updates consisting of just a new brawl pass, skins, a new brawler or 2, and maybe a new game mode or two wasn’t cutting it anymore. However, over the course of the end of 2022 and all of 2023, brawl stars underwent some major changes that would lead to the game reaching a peak similar to where it was in 2020. So, in this video, we’re going to talk about why brawl stars is doing so well, and discuss the 6 main events that led to this point. Some of these features have led to some controversy and many in the community still hate them, but the game is better overall as a whole as a result.

I remember the old days and how competitive was just a different gamemode on rotation and how you can horde your brawl boxes and big boxes i got sandy on a brawlbox for free and the hype was good

I started playing in 2019 and stopped when they announced the boxes removal, I thought the game is just not fun anymore. I started playing around october last year and the game is more fun that ever
As someone who has just returned to the game back in december again, I agree with all the reasons you pointed out in the video. Although in terms of the current progression, one thing I'm a little annoyed by is how slow it is to get brawlers using credit (or rather how hard getting credit is) compared to the old brawl boxes, but I believe it is still overall a great change for things to be much less chance oriented and the game is definitely going in the right direction
Better for getting legendary brawlers though.
I agree that getting credit is hard but masteries lowkey made it easy get your legendaries and mythics to bronze 3 to get 100 credits, and yes i do realize its one time but it makes for some quick credit

I haven’t seen the video yet, but what was objectively good about the updates? Furthermore, Brawl has always had the P2W elements that lots of mobile games and console games have through micro transactions. It’s kinda the gaming meta rn for developers to making bank. Personally, I don’t blame them. Micro transactions allow developers to continue making a more reliable source of income with less effort. Instead of making a new game, they can update the current one like brawl stars with new features like cosmetics, modes or characters.

The only thing I will say is the recent deal with Kit being released OP as shit while being locked behind a paywall, then hard nerfing him as he became freely available wasn’t very subtle of them lmao. Even tho the vocal part of the community doesn’t seem to like these hypercharge changes and such, I would rather them be trying new things instead of leaving the game to become stale. (TF2)

I played brawl stars since 2019 and I can say then it was hugely popular, my friends and I played it almost every day. In 2020 when first brawl pass season came, everyone played it on my class. But later it fell down in my class, me and my cousins were only to still play brawl stars and withness every season and every update. The first signs of seeing brawl stars coming back is when I noticed my friends were playing brawl stars, I was shocked to see thrm play again, that's beacuse they were grinding for mega pig. Not only my entire class played, ENTIRE SCHOOL played it a lot showing brawl stars is back in the path

I'd like to give an opinion as a person who returned to the game on December after 1 year without playing:
I've always been a casual/tryhard player, I like to push trophies, power league and I do like competitive, but the thing is that in 2022 I started to have a schedule and Brawl Stars in that moment consumed a lot of time, that's one reason I left it, alongside the slow progression the game had and hoe difficult it was to me to play.
When I started playing again (because I watched BSC world finals), a friend of mine explained me all the changes in club and trophy system that the game had while I was off, I absolutely like the way the game is taking because it brings me a lot of comfort with my schedule, it feels great to play again without it feeling a huge responsibility.
I find it funny how the community completely forgot about how everyone complained about boxes barely ever giving good rewards, but when Star Drops were added people began acting like Brawl Boxes were this amazing thing that you could rely on for good progression.
That's not to say that there aren't issues with Star Drops currently. But I think that those issues are completely blown out of proportion and aren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be. Especially after that one maintenance during the circus season that made hypercharges much more likely to appear out of a legendary drop along with other changes.
Also I think it's worth mentioning that 5v5 is a huge reason for the game's resurgence that wasn't mentioned in this video. People play Brawl Stars for the gameplay, and 5v5 brought a new gameplay experience. Plus the spike in the google trends graph is around November 2023 which is about the time that 5v5 was announced if I'm remembering right.
Very true, when boxes were in the game, you got jackshit from them. I always wished a way to be able to GUARANTEE a brawler.
Finally a good you tuber that doesn't make drama about the update to get bloody views. Keep the great content man
I disagree with one thing. I was very dissapointed in the mega pig (I still am) but not because it's a bad casual friendly event. I was dissapointed that I couldn't play more to get more stuff that I need. This is why I loved club league so much. I had to play more but I was getting what I wanted. I think they should add a more competitive club related event alongside megapig (maybe club wars or tournaments of sorts) for more active players to enjoy. I agree that casual playerbase is the most important but expirience of a competitive and active player in brawl stars is just horrible, you can push for masteries, push power league (and I pray that PL rework will be asap because PL sucks as well) or push trophies and nothing more. It's just wrong to leave most dedicated and loyal players with this bs that we have right now. Other that, I completely agree with everything said in this video, it's great really.

I think the idea off bling just is kinda missed out in the actual update, because they made it exclusive for the brawl pass plus (being power league the only way for F2P players to get bling)
But for compensation you are getting free gems though.
They're Reworking Power league and Trophy Road soon so, don't worry too much!

I actually play this other game called Animal Jam: Play Wild! And about a year ago I was looking for anyone who played Brawl Stars while playing. It took me three days to find one person. Recently, I went in the game again and asked around, and found 11 people in 4 days. It's crazy that it's alive again, and I'm so happy about it.

as someone who started playing in 2019, it was it its peak in 2020 brawl stars was so popular i pushed 16000 trophies but then nobody was playing it so i uninstaled it, still regreting that to this day(i didnt have supercell id)
I'd say brawl stars is really fun right now. They made it easy for f2p players like me to progress.

Boxes were a lot of fun tho... And some new brawlers are actually annoying, like Mico or Chuck, but mostly Kit is just a combination of some brawlers, mainly it's the invisibility that triggers me. Like, it belongs to Leon!!! Good video tho, I see your point

The things I would change:
1. Make power points be the only thing required for brawler upgrades. It is extremely difficult as a new player to amass coins. I have 11k power points and 600 coins. Then maybe you could realistically get true silver or gold skins.
2. Make the Starr road say "Any epic" instead of choose between Bibi, Grom and Frank for example. If I want Amber as my first legendary over Leon i should have thay choice.
3. Make credits easier to have.
Personally i would bring boxes back.instead of star drops
It would also have rewards as satr dropsjust instead of one you would have pkwer points and conins and all from them and chace for skuns and brawlers and all
It imo looks better both visually,and for some weird reason is much more stable to use than stsr drops,which are hella laggy
What I hate about the mega pig is that it takes a month to arrive then u get 2 days to grind it so if u ar doing something or your club is casual to bad there goes 90% of the loot and like 10% of your monthly progression( and no grinding 15 wins in 2 days is NOT stress free that’s far worse then club league) a very good quality of life would be aligning the mega pig to the brawl pass cos they are both one month and cos your checking brawl pass more often it would also bring more excitement not only are u getting a new brawl pass but your also getting mega pig

I agree with almost everything here besides your mega pig approach, before you had guaranteed good resources for your grind(which tbh wasnt that hard to complete if u had a good club) now you get less than 2k gold everytime and trash rng resources, star drops daily is a good thing but as they are rng doesnt make sense changing the club shop system just to add more use to the starr dropa

and in general, as a whole, I always loved the changes and the updates Supercell gave us
(plus, we have an amazing dev team and community management team)
and now with the new creative and unique Brawlrers they've been adding, it feels even more fun

I recently got back into the game and saw most of my old classmates who never touched the game for 5+ years suddenly start playing again. It was so surreal to see, theyre literally in university right now. I had no idea what Brawl Stars did but it worked
I think you forgot to mention win streaks. I know it's not a very big new feature but it alone made me try to improve more at the game and gave me the determination to push my first rank 25 brawler (Pearl) just by playing with randoms.

-Masteries
-Gears
-Catalog
One thing i especially dont like about this new progression system is the ammount of time you need to get a brawler through Starr Road,and Starr Drops seem very underwhelming most of the time,also if it was a brawl box you would get power points and gold at the same time,not one or the other.

I have been playing since the christmas update in 2018, and honestly, the game has improved a lot. The only problems I really see is how hard is to get most stuff. You pointed out the skins difficulty to get even with the catalog and those rainbow pastel points (i forgot their name lol), the game lagging as hell even tho my phone is very good, and this new brawl pass. God, I just hated sm when this paid Brawl Pass was announced I did quit the game. Come backrecently because my sister asked to play because fr I really don't want Nrawl Stars to become a Clash Royale 2.
I really hated the boxes as I only had 9 brawlers after 3 months of playing, I just never got anyone
as a player who came back to brawl stars on christmas i agree the game feels better overall i do buy the brawl pass plus though couse its value so i cant relate to f2p players but still in like 3 monts i was able to get 10k trophys and im still not burnt out bc there is so much to do. it never gets boring

Ive played Brawl Stars for far longer (with breaks, of course) than I think I shouldve, but I feel like its the F2P aspect, well-known company and well-made game with great ideas that is keeping Brawl Stars popular every once in a while...

The thing about the popularity, is that being a player from global and seeing the new players who don’t have any skill, and even more bad randoms of course, get titles, r30 brawlers, etc.
It would be great if they would add a feature on stacking starr drops, so you can get a desired amount and afterwards, open them.
in addition of information, star drops provides coin, bling, power ups, pin, and skins, we don't know what other things we can get there

As a f2p player, I complely agree with you that the Bling system is amazing and the amount of availble Bling is justified because it's free. Cosmetics are always awsome to have. But then you said the same thing for Hypercharges, and that's where you're wrong. Skins and cosmetics can be expansive and require a lot of grinding to get for free, because they are just that - cosmetics. They don't alter the game in any serious way, they just make your Brawler look 5 times as good. Hypercharges, on the other hand, not only alter the game, the game now completly revolves AROUND them. They give you a massive stat increase as well as an upgrade to your super ability, which includes (but not limited to) Fang being able to teamwipe even when there are walls around, Leon oblitirating you and running away while staying invisible the entire time, Edgar recharging his super in like 3 seconds, Crow and Collete one-shotting the heist safe and more. This ability is VERY omportant to have, and it costs almost as much as maxing out and entire brawler.They are WAY too expansive, so while I hate saying this, but for the first time since Starr road, this game is pay to win.

Gonna be honest & say this, hyper charge should have been replaced with something similar to mix’s variation system where you can unlock a brawler a second time to kinda like a starpower & they’ll do different things such as having a different attack pattern or completely change their supers.
Because of the updates i only have 44 brawlers at 20k trophies... i had quite bad luck and now with the credits u cant get lucky anymore so im just behind with brawlers😢
Blings upon release was horrible you used to lose more trophies and get less blings then they fixed it

I started brawl satrs in january 2018 and then left after 2 years cause i had every brawler. I returned back in december last year and the game still feels very fun
I reinstaled brawl stars this year and I think the game is alot better, I made a whole new account and started all over again (I had 16k trophies in my old acc), with only 4k trophies, I already have 3 star powers, 2 mythics and 5 epic brawlers, for me back then this was some crazy progress, you would need atleast 9k trophies for that. Also I think removing the trophies need for certain brawlers was a great choice.
Remember when this game was canada exclusive and i had to go thru hoops and shit to play it by changing my appstore location and whatnot. Im so happy to see this game thrive, imo it genuinely outgrew all other supercell games considering how epic the community is and how much the game has to offer. Unlike the other big supercell games this one still actually has a considerable amount of growth it can still achieve not only in terms of popularity but as a game overall. Love this game :)
I played the game in 2020 so much and quit and 2 weeks ago my whole friend group randomly decided to reinstall and now i see that literally everyone else did the same thing, surely this isnt a coincidence💀

I only had one other friend playing it at the time and he wasn't able to get anyone else playing.To be honest I started playing because i was tired of just reading and talking at lunch with my friends.

You should be able to get Starr drops from shop like boxes from offers or gems cause You need like 20 from them to even have a chance on legendary

Why ppl complain abt star drops, it’s better than nothing, and it didn’t replace brawl boxes the star road replaced it so star drops are basically an additional feature
*i will never forget how was frustating that time where my brother uninstalled brawl stars from my tablet due to raging hard on it, when i was close to unlock bo. le'ts thank god the trophy road brawlers got removed from the trophy road and turned like the other brwalers with their respective rarities, making them more accessible for the players.*

My biggest issue with bling is the fact that there is no limited skins anymore all the Christmas skins are available whenever and christmas and Chinese new year skins don’t feel special anymore I just wish they were only available during their duration same for the braw pass skins buying the brawl pass doesn’t feel cool anymore buying it you got a (usually) cool skin only brawl pass owners got aswell as the skin for that chromatic brawler for season kinda sad they made all brawl pass available because to me having those skins was a way to flex how long I had played for like wow that guy has the merchant Gale skin he must have played for a while now that’s just not a thing

I thought hypercharges were going to be hard to get and super p2w but I've gotten 5 or 6 in legendary star drops as I have almost every brawler and it actually makes maxing brawlers fun now
I love how he doesn’t mention they don’t give you new brawlers. I’ve heard a bunch of people complaining about not getting brawlers from Starr drops, but I’ve gotten almost 11 and for that I think that Starr drops are awesome and one of the best decisions the brawl stars dev team ever made.
Tbh, it is funny how I have been playing this game for so long but at the same time I became bored of the game right now. And it is not for any reason you have mentioned in the video, I just can’t stand the balance of the game right now. It just feels a lot more boring as an end game player, facing the same brawlers over and over and having trash randoms that can’t do anything. 5v5 was a great addition to make the game more fun (which imo you could have mentioned, since some people couldn’t play with more friends) and it made the game more exciting, but the balancing issues make it again pretty boring. But I hope they can improve it with the future!
7:18 I kinda disagree on the mega pig point you made. The thing is, especially with the new brawl pass as kairos mentioned there is a mass shortage of gold and token doublers are not worth it. Power points are available but the coins arent. Although it looks like ur not getting anything from the mega pig, it should be more considering it only comes out once a month or something like that. The rewards feel lackluster because there have been megapigs where I just did not progress at all on my account, maybe unlocking a random profile picture or pin. Its not that the cosmetics is something i dislike, because Im all up for getting bling and pins, but its just that coins and token doublers are very scarce and mega pig doesnt help at all. In the video it showed that you got 500 coins from the total mega pig, and thats just one tenth of a hypercharge and one fourth of a star power. For something that occurs rarely it should either give more stardrops or buff how many coins and xp doublers you get (sorta inclining towards the more drops because it gives me more chances to get a legendary lol). Overall great video though, I agree with everything else. Keep it up!

I'll be honest, me and my friends have started playing Brawl Starts again a month ago [we used to play in early 2019 to late 2019] and I honestly don't understand the backlash behind the Mega Pig replacing the Club League, yes, you get less rewards; but it just feels really rewarding for casual players, who don't have all brawlers and don't wanna grind their lives away for skins they'll likely never use because they're overshadowed by other good skins.
We literally can't even wait for the Mega Pig to start, and my whole school is at it. Everyone's competing in it and honestly, Brawl Stars has never been more fun.

I was always an f2p player until they changed the Battle Pass this year! Now I'm looking forward to it and I bought the first 2 new BP! I'm happy with it and it's worth paying for it since it gives more.
i played it in 2021 and and for some time in 2022. got back like 2 months ago - seemed like everything changed. it did but imo for the better. star drops > boxes. i never got good stuff from the boxes and love how star drops offer a bigger variety of rewards. the ability to gain cosmetics f2p? awesome! AND the amount of loot we get from the brawl pass w/o paying? AWESOME!
When the brawl pass got changed I instantly thought that it must suck if you bought gems to be ready For future passes in advance and that 1 Person who got millions of gems with that golden ticket 😂
Amazing video, i agree with you a lot. I think credits are WAAAAAY better than boxes, when Gus was releassed, i used a FULL paid brawl pass to get him... a FULL pass... not counting gadgets and star powers lol. So yeah, in my case i love credits!
Also, something you didn't mention is the improvement on communication, man, remember when we got 4 mega pigs and they saw the feedback and buffed starr drops? or when they were changing some chromatic brawlers masteries so they gave us an EVENT TO FARM IT and even told us which ones were going to get nerfed? man i love the CM and how you can see the listen to the feedback

I honestly think they ruined Bling with the most recent update, because it was supposed to be a free to play currency that allows everyone to get skins without spending money, but the Brawl Pass is now the most reliable way to get Bling and you can't get the Brawl Pass with gems anymore.
