I love The Prophecy, got me interested in angelic lore and fallen angels , it definitely paved the way for the horror/fantasy trope of fallen angels and wars with angels like Supernatural
Stormare took it to the next level and hasn’t been surpassed. Viggo definitely scared the shyte out of you though. It was like a burning hatred and animalistic anger that was kept by a cold focused contempt, and disgust. Stormare completely terrified you … his portrayal was as if he played with you from the superiority of a predator that enjoyed toying with his food. Just an irritating annoyance that he laughed at with cruelty. “Oh … I miss the old names”
I love this film and re-watch it frequently. Every performance is spot-on, especially Vigo Mortensen's role as the Devil. His is one of the very few performances (in my view) that gets the Devil right..
Viggo's extremely sinister version of Lucifer is appropriate to THIS story. We all realize how life altering finding out Lucifer is REAL, and then him validating your childhood fears of him being under your bed, COULD be if it happened. Dude even tells Thomas to keep the lights on at the end of the movie😇
It’s easy to forget this wasn’t a Miramax film the way most people would think of Miramax. This was a Dimension film, Miramax’s genre specific subsidiary. Up to 1994, Miramax hadn’t had a big hit movie. Dimension’s job largely was to make low budget sci-fi and horror that would be an easy sell to video stores and cable and even help sell other Miramax movies (You want the new Hellraiser? You’re going to also have to order this French movie that did good on the festivals). Dimension was keeping the lights on financially. I always figured the delays in Prophecy’s release was because while it was being shot, The Crow became the company’s first big hit and then when it was being edited, Pulp Fiction was shaping up to be a juggernaut, so Prophecy got put on the back burner.
My mom caught this late one night on TV. Couldn’t sleep so she just randomly decided to watch this until she got tired again and wound up getting sucked into it. She loves this movie!
Saw this on HBO in the late 90s and loved it...Mortensen and Walken killed it in this movie...Koteas did pretty good too but with all those other actors were scene stealers...Stoltz was impressive as well..must watch for any who likes movies like Constantine 🔥🔥
One of my absolute favorites EVER! Actually scared the shit outta me as a child but as an adult I just love it. So many great memories of my childhood:-) Miss you ma:-)
My first experience with The Prophecy was when my folks and I were getting ready to leave the house right as it started on the Sci-fi channel. We all stood there in the living room and watched for a good 15 minutes before we realized what was going on lol. Mesmerizing film.
Best mistake I ever made haha. I was a fan of a movie called Prophecy, a late 70's creature film set in Maine and as a kid from Maine I always enjoyed seeing movies outside King stories taking place there. Went to video store where they had the cases with just the name on the outside and you brought it up so they could put the VHS in when you rented it, saw Prophecy missing the "The" in front of it and well ended up pleasantly surprised. Great movie imo, Viggo as Lucifer is one of the best. Loved how he described Hell to because as a child I completely understood why that was worse than the traditional descriptions, especially to an Angel.
A lot of people (including myself) scoffed at the idea of a second angelic rebellion. It was unheard of in my church circles. But in recent years, many researchers and teachers have considered that a second incursion may have occurred after the great flood. Some believe that more angels came to Earth and took wives for themselves, as the 200 Watchers had done. So, this lends to the story of the angelic war being an ongoing, continuous conflict.
I liked the sequels, actually. But Walkens really carried it for me. Without him, I don't think the movies would've held any interest to me. He's one of those rare distinguished actors that plays every role like it's Shakespeare, even if the entire production is crap. I never seen him phone-in a performance. But Pt 2 felt tacked-on, the weakest of the three, but I liked how Gabriel seemed to have an actual arc that ran through the three movies. Then they made a few more Prophacy movies without Walkens and everyone lost interest. lol
This is an awesome movie. Christopher Walken gives it all and Lucifer is one scary motherfucker. In my country it is only available on VHS. The DVD releases were limited and are hard to get. Some of them are heavily censored and not worth a watch. 2 and 3 were released regularly on DVD. 4 and 5 got a Blu Ray only release, but also limited and the DVD releases were bootlegs.
I love this movie since I saw it for the first time. This certain mixture of fantasy, thriller and something occult immediately inspired me. Christopher Walken portrayed Gabriel wonderfully. I also find the film music very nice
This movies theme for me was about faith. Faith in God, in ourselves, in humanity. I love this film. Walken is so good in it he's scary. And, I thought the way satan was handled is how he would be, as well as angels in our human conception of them.
I’ve never liked how Gabriel was used as a villain, but I get that it was so they could use the trumpet, touch of death, and other gimmicks to establish the threat.
Excellent first film, Viggo was scary and Walken was Walken. The sequels (2-3) did wrap the story up. Didn't watch the others. Watch the first film, it's good.
This film I put in the same category as Frailty and Lord of Illusions. Fantastic religious horror that sadly no one knows about. Also, Viggo as Satan was amazing. “Nooo I want you to come home with me.” And that line about him really being under your bed when you prayed as a child. Yeesh.
Saw this in theaters and have loved it ever since. Engrossing story and an incredible cast. This is where Viggo first caught my eye and I still wish he'd revisit Lucifer. He was cold and magnetic at the same time. Walken just blew me away too. It's not often you get a smartass angel. My only wonder is that I've read/heard there was a longer cut of the film with more about the evil colonel and that would have been interesting...
I absolutely love The Prophecy! ❤ I grew up with it (and the OG Mortal Kombat ❤), it was one of the first movies of that horror/fantasy, good vs evil personality, incorporating classic Christian mythology that intrigued and inspired me as a storyteller, still does. That's partially when I realized Supernatural Horror is my favorite genre. Now as great as I think it is I have some issues with it, mainly because Eric Stolz as Simon doesn't last long in it! Everyone really acted their asses off and gave some strong performances. Are some stronger than others? Sure, but it isn't distracting. Solid film!
WALKEN happened, that's what! "I'm an angel. I **** firstborns while their mamas watch. I turn cities into salt. I even, when I feel like it, rip the souls from little girls, and from now till kingdom come, the only thing you can count on in your existence is never understanding why."
I still have the LaserDiscs of parts one and two, and I have all five on Blu-ray. Vinegar Syndrome is doing a 4K box set of the first three Prophecy films, and I pre-ordered the set as soon as it was made available. Christopher Walken nails the part of Gabriel to a T, but Viggo Mortensen gets the opportunity to not only portray Satan, but he out-acts Walken and he is in the movie for less than 10 minutes. Eric Stoltz, Amanda Plummer and Adam Goldberg all shine in their parts as well. Steve Hytner gets the great part of Joseph that carries over to the first two sequels. Speaking of the sequels, parts two and three take a slight dip in quality as they are DTV, but they are both still pretty enjoyable. Parts four and five are pretty forgettable, but Kari Whurer is in both of them, and she does the best she can with what she’s given. I wish you would’ve given a little more love to Viggo Mortensen as he was pretty damn good in Prison from 1987.
Walken is just awesome in this. I could watch this movie anytime and his performance is excellent. Scary as hell too! This was the first time seeing or noticing Mortenson. I loved the way his character is introduced. And the way he plays it calm and Kool...for being Satan I mean. Another great video JoBlo. Love the channel.
I thought the first Prophecy movie was excellent. Good storyline, AWESOME acting, and just enough action to keep you interested. Viggo Mortensen's Lucifer is one of the best and most creepy in movie history, and Walken chews the scenery as Gabriel! The second Prophecy was...okay. Walken was excellent as usual, but the overall story and acting were weaker than in the original. The "redemption" of Gabriel in the third Prophecy movie was interesting, but there wasn't enough beyond that to hold the movie together. I've never seen Prophecy 4 or 5, but I've heard they suck something awful!
I Remember First Watching The Prophecy When I Was A Kid With My Mother And Re-Watched This Movie Along With The Sequels On Cinemax's Free Preview Weekend Back In 2021 It Still Questions My Faith. Speaking Of The Fly 2 JOBLO Can you Cover The Fly 2 (1989).
The film is called "God's Army" in Germany (which is weird that they gave it a different english title) but for once I think it's cooler than the original title, which sounds a little generic..
I remember watching this on TNT a TON the summer my parents divorced (so 1997). my 14 year old self had a HUGE crush on Virginia Madsen. Heck, old man me still has a soft spot for her. Part of me is still jealous of Paul Giamatti's character in "Sideways"...and I mean, seriously, his best friend is garbage in that movie and his ex-wife (that he cheated on) was nowhere near as great a person as Virginia Madsen's character was.

Not one for religion myself but this is definitely a favourite of mine. As a collector I also have 2 and 3 but, as a collector, I have to berate myself for not knowing that there is also a 4 and 5. On investigation 4 stars Sean Pertwee and Doug Bradley so, this is doubly annoying Adam Goldberg stood out, but only because I expect and usually receive incredible performances from Walken, Mortensen and Koteas.
Yes but, Kari Wuhrer was in the final two installments, someone also part of the Hellraiser franchise... so it's totally understandable as to why someone would not know or remember those films existed.

Viggo as Satan is one of my favorite depictions next to xxxStellen Karsgard'sxxx (Peter Stormare) in Constantine.
Peter Stormare played the Devil in Constantine.
He was great.
Wow. That's racist. I guess all Swedes look alike to you

I saw the first one in a theater. Viggo mortensen STEALS the film.
For some reason the movie was renamed to "God's Army" in my country, even though "The Prophecy" makes much more sense.
I could watch anything with Christopher Walken in and the Dead zone and The prophecy and Batman returns are my personal favorites
