    So getting some comments on the 65mn steel. To be clear, I am not a steel expert, nor have I ever claimed to be. I always give you my in the field experience so you all can have a good data point. So, 65mn is a chinese produced carbon steel. I don't know a lot about it. All I do know is compared to the condor primitive sequoia and Sniper Bladeworks SOF chopper (assumed condor made) both knives using 1075 steel, the CRKT Humdinger, holds an edge longer under the same abuse. The 65mn seems to be acting more like SK5 steel from cold steel or CRKT. That is just my experience and yours may vary. With the right tuning and work, you can get better performance out of 4cylinder engine verses a basic V6 engine. Sometimes that happens with knife steels too. That might be what is happening here. I am not claiming 65mn steel is some great steel, but it is good, and when you are on a budget, and you want a camp knife, mine surprised me with its edge retention.

      That 65MN is basically a Chinese version of 1060 mid carbon steel. It's okay in my book.

    • @roadneymiller7941
      @roadneymiller7941 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The engine analogy is exactly right. CRKT knows how to tune their steel, imo they are doing a good job with their Chinese steels. The quality control is obviously very good. Good vid!

      Don’t understand all the hang ups on steel types... if it’s working for your system an you like it, and can afford it.... isn’t that a win no matter what it is?

    • @roadneymiller7941
      @roadneymiller7941 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's right in my book, if you're happy with it, then roll with it. One thing to always remember is that ancient people did just fine with bone and rock etc for knives. Some people are insistent on certain types of steel being better than others and while that may be true to a degree in some ways, it is not the golden rule imo.

    Thanks for the review, Aaron! There's not a lot out there on this particular knife and you confirmed my suspicions. When I first saw it I thought it reminded me of the Cold Steel Bushman knives and figured it would be a really good slicer.

    Haha, I grabbed one of these when I ordered my Kuk. REALLY neat knife. Also, I have quite a few heavy duty knives/choppers that use 65nm steel and NONE of them have ever let me down. No chips, rolls or breaks even after extensive work in hard woods and even pine knots.

    Thank's Aaron for the review, the only CRKT that ever jumped out at me was the Homefront. The ONLY thing that stoped me was the AUS8. I just cant justify paying 100.00 CAD . For the price they charge they could have at least use a better steel.

    From the little I gleaned via Google, it’s a fairly good steel....not fantastic, but good. Opinions differ greatly on other steels with similar toughness, hardness, etc. However, there seems to be a general consensus that it’s similar to the slightly softer high-carbon steels. So, it holds an edge OK, but has to be sharpened a bit more often than 1095, for example.
    The plus side: it’s fairly inexpensive, sharpens easily, and being a softer steel, is not likely to chip under normal use.
    It certainly wouldn’t be my go-to steel, but the Humdinger is budget friendly, well designed, and seems to be of good quality, according to most opinions I’ve read from Humdinger owners.
    Great review. For the price, I’m getting one and using it for all of the rough daily chores like batoning wood, feather sticks, etc., and save wear on my favorite EDC, extended its longevity. In fact, I had planned on getting an Old Hickory 7” butcher knife for that very reason. But, I’ve read several accounts of the scales falling off while batoning and it not holding an edge well at all. On Amazon, the Old Hickory was about $12, last time I checked. So, for an extra $36 to $40, I can get a beater blade that I could also rely on in case things go sideways.

    The 65mn steel in my Kershaw camp 10 and CRKT "Chance in Hell" has exceeded my expectations so far. Very tough steel with good edge retention - no complaints whatsoever. I'm not really interested in a larger knife with a partial tang however.

    • @joshjohnson5307
      @joshjohnson5307 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      estima8tor1 yeah man! I've had a camp10 for about 3 years now and it punches WAY above its weight class. I've had no issues with the 65mn whatsoever. I even stripped the coating and put a hamon style patina on the cutting edge. Its top notch for bottom shelf price!

    Personally, I wish these companies would stop with the Chinese produced cheap steel knives. I wish you would place emphasis on U.S.A. made high quality knives. I would make the point, even though I'm not the most environmentally "green" person, that we'd all be better off with manufacturers creating well designed and quality products out of quality materials. Our standards in America have gone more to mass production for mass profit. We, in the knife community know the difference, but the average millennial shopping at Walmart much of the time does not. So Sad. Thanks Aaron for trying to educate these Nimrods and even though you have some foreign made products you tell it like it is. One exception though is you place emphasis on "budget friendly" items maybe a little too much. I don't feel anyone has to settle for less than quality stuff, even low income individuals can save up or work extra for higher quality things. Perhaps you could encourage people to consider that idea.

      Just giving feed back that it is holding a better edge then condor 1075 I have used lately.

    • @trigger78
      @trigger78 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      may be ,but 65mn(1066) it's still lower qualiti steel between this 2 steels

    • @roadneymiller7941
      @roadneymiller7941 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The numbers 1066, 1075, 65mn do not designate quality of steel in any way shape or form, they designate an approximate amount of carbon used in the mixture. Quality of steel depends upon the quality and purity of the materials used in making the mixture of the steel along with the heat treat. In other words, it is entirely possible that Crkt's 65mn could hold a better edge and maybe even be a better steel all the way around than Condor's 1075, and it really doesn't matter if 65mn is closer in composition to 1060, 1075, 1080 or any other number on paper. Gideon is giving us his honest feedback on what appears to be a very very high quality nice knife made by a company who tends to produce some very high quality knives. Thank you and have a nice day.

    • @trigger78
      @trigger78 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roadney Miller that't not tru
      1095 is better then 1075 wich it's better then 1066 etc...
      65mn it's chinese steel
      It's not pure aloy too
      Think abowt it ;)

    • @roadneymiller7941
      @roadneymiller7941 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Incorrect! The higher the number doesn't make it better, those numbers only designate an approximate range of carbon and tells you nothing about the quality of the carbon itself or the quality of the heat treat. More carbon does not equate to better. Some companies such as ESEE and OKC produce some of the finest 1095 to be had and then their are some companies who produce poor 1095 that isn't worth anything. Not knocking Condor because I think they produce some decent 1075 which is probably better than most of the 1095 coming out of China, but from experience I can say that I personally think OKC is producing better 1075 atm on their spec plus alpha series. Their is a difference in quality even though the steels carry the same number, so yes it is entirely possible that CRKT is using very pure elements in their mixture for their 65mn and the purity of those elements and the heat treat can make a very large difference. Just like their is a difference in the purity of bottled water, there is a difference in the purity of the elements in steel.
