The sad part is that I don't think he broke down I think he went back to his old ways where he push his feelings down into his bruised heart and carry on with his day to day while slowly dying inside 😢 That's what he did before he met Magnus and he was miserable 😢
Everybody thought when magnus broke up with Alec it was painful. This is a totally different level of pain

The fact that when Alec said he needed a break Magnus didn't even consider the possibility of him wanting to break up... he thought Alec wanted them to go on vacation together and got excited 😢
You can see how hard it was for Alec to do that especially when magnus kissed him and hugged him he was trying so hard not to breakdown this scene made me sob I love them ❤️❤️
Tho you already know these two ended together it still hurts to see this scene again😭😭🤧

He had to do it, if he didn’t take a pause from magnus, he wouldn’t get his power back. And Alec knows that magnus wants his power back more than anything. So he did it for magnus happiness. But he also knew it would break both off them😭

It hits so much harder when you have seen the show. But for anyone that might not have known what was going on or why. I’m here! To answer all your questions.
Magnus “lost” his powers and he was very upset and sad about it. He became mortal. He wanted them back more than anything.
Alexander was talking with Magnus’s father, the one who took his powers. He made a deal with the devil (essentially)
Asmodeus aka Magnus’s dad said that he would give Magnus his powers back but on one condition. Alexander had to break up with Magnus because their love was making him (Magnus) weak. And Asmodeus didn’t want Magnus to have weaknesses.
Alexander then agreed and broke up with Magnus and was very sad because they love each other. But Alexander put Magnus’s happiness before his own. Magnus was also super sad.
To tell you how much Alec loved Magnus here is this. In the same episode or the one before that Alexander asked his mom for the family ring so he could propose.

I cried for hours on end and then locked myself in the bathroom. I know it sounds a little bit dramatic, but the conviction that both actors put into this breakup was heartbreaking and I thought I would NEVER recover.

This seen made my burst out crying
The acting was so good in this part. It hurt Alec to see Magnus so broken, drunk, and depressed saying that he’ll never be happy again without his powers. You can see how hard it is for Alec to look Magnus in the eye and lie to him. He tries to stand up taller so Magnus can’t kiss him but he can’t refuse any of Magnus’s kisses even though he knows he can’t reciprocate. He can’t even bring himself to pull Magnus off him or make him let go. He stands there waiting for Magnus to let go. In the series, we also find out that Alec’s part nephilim which means they only love once fiercely in his life so he would break his own heart forever just so Magnus could be happy again.
Unfortunately, Magnus’s own words were the catalyst for his break up. Without meaning to, he basically made Alec believe that the only thing he couldn’t live without is his magic. Magnus also said some other terrible things to Alec that was completely uncalled for and worse he said these things to Alec at his own proposal dinner. Alec was so understanding then too, putting aside his own sadness and hurt to console Magnus.

In the book when Magnus broke up with Alec I cried. I cried my heart out, it was so sad. All because Alec wanted to be immortal. Butttt they got back together so thats good...but I cried when Magnus broke up with him😢❤

In the books, it was Magnus who ended the relationship. And Alec still went to save him from hell. That's where they found out about Asmodeus. Magnus started praying and they were like "what the fuuuck" hahahahahha
