    Most entertaining lecture so far! Which course do you go into hypnosis more in depth? I am interested in learning more about it.

      NEW303, “Hypotheses of the Unconscious”. I’m teaching that course now, so I’ve only made a few lectures public, but after the semester is complete I’ll likely release the whole playlist.

    Different interpretations of second noble truth - origins/arising:
    1) suffering is caused by craving - not linking up to reality of situation, frustration when can't get what want, unrequited love of actively bad like smoking. No control over non existence, will die (want existence) and sensual as well
    2) level beneath - craving creates conditions for suffering and conditions for craving. Don't buy cookies if you eat a few, china living renting apartnent no food no desire. No cookies at home means less conditions for indulging a craving. Break up - unresolved feelings with broken relationship can be a problem. Need space first, remove conditions first. Easier to intervene on condition than craving.
    3) craving is suffering (more subtle level down) - it hurts to crave. A felt sense that is uncomfortable. Tense yes. Heat. Closed off. Cannot focus on task.
    4) craving is the arising of suffering - one begins to arising and ceasing of craving. During meditation for example. More obvious things not stable as you still your mind more and more. Deep grief - comes in waves. Comes and goes. Stables aren't stable. waves around everywhere. Outside in flux but also inside too. Not continuous/forever/permanent. Ride out cigarette 5-10 mins, wave will pass through. Good thing about this is that you notice is vapour like and less like a brick wall
    Tanna - craving/thirst dukkha is caused by tanna.
    Thirst trap (desired to create desire/craving/moving towards)
    Sensual (warmth maybe)/existence (attachment to continuation to life if nearly hit by car)/craving for non existence (can include kill oneself, push things away, I'm so done with this/I'm so so k and tired of this(implies still entangled). Not heard it in this way before and curious why it isn't laid out in this manner.
    Fuelled by ignorance and not see us nature of things (essential self,illusion of permanent, not interdependent).
    There are positive desires - can help others, bodsisarta, desire to get englightnened.
    Tantric - desire can be used to transcend desire. Indulge desire to purge yourself. (Not focus here)
    Craving automatic. Meditation to see linkages, parts, differentiations, slow things down less reactive that will cause regrets. Don't think about consequences.
    Aside - agent arena changed cravings. Clothing changed in COVID so people showered less and didn't buy as much clothes. They didn't see purpose. Conditions of craving fell apart externally, the link fell away. Arena itself can create and cease cravings like the cookie. And this links to 3) and 4) above too. Taking a step back and questioning this can be helpful. Are there conditions/reasons that wouldn't make you want something? Are there other ways to meet that need? Relates to improved agency and potential change of arena. So that emotional need can be met (as typically things you desire relate to deep seated emotional desire)
    Amazing - hypnosis, induction and then get you to think of first time you smoked, realise you didn't smoke first time because addicted to nicotine but because of emotional reason (fit in stand out etc). Remember why started. Hey I appreciate you did this trying to help me, now it's over, going through over, don't need that, appreciate it but not needed anymore. Emotional material no long there and craving can drop.
    With meditation, realise discomfort more. Like anger/irritable (which can be a manifestation of anxiety at times)
    People in 20s renegotiate relationship with parents during this age- not just you lol. Because no longer child not yet adult etc. Thanks for disclosing this example about your dad - resonate with this. Reduce reactivity. Get shot with arrow and then shoot themselves with another arrow through reaction
