    Actually, people do buy ThinkPads for their legendary battery life. ThinkPads have always been at the top when it comes to battery life, and this trend continues ... if you buy one of their more traditional laptops, such as the X250, T450s, T450, T550, W550s, etc. Oh, and you have to get the bigger battery configuration, too. But they're supposed to last 20 hours.
    That said, I would've liked it if you (and other TH-camrs) reviewed one of the aforementioned ThinkPads instead of their "Macbook Air competitor."

    The trackpoint is convenient and saves time. When you write a lot it's very tedious to reach the mouse every time and then continue to write. With the trackpoint I don’t need to, my hands are on the keyboard all the time, thus make me very efficient at work. Not to mention the spill resistant keyboard that I have tested several times on my w530.I don’t need to be concern that something will crack when I put it in my bag because sometimes the bag become highly compressed. Excellent typing experience. Good job Lenovo!

  • @Diannicles

    Fn/Ctrl swap has been a standard in ThinkPads for forever. It was like that in my dad's Core 2 Duo T40, and it's like that on my W530 from 2012.

    @cyb3ar897 9 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Why the hate on the trackpoint (which is its real name, not "the nipple")? Trackpoints are much more accurate than a touchpad, and much faster. Further, because of your hand position to use it, it's much easier to go from typing to mousing and back again.

    • @pixelPlex
      @pixelPlex 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also the Trackpoint is much easier to use than the touchpad with its unintuitive gestures.

    • @pixelPlex
      @pixelPlex 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@melvinharris7859 Really? If someone doesn't want to use the Trackpoint then the Touchpad is available. As long as people have choice then they aren't being forced into anything. There was a time when ThinkPad's only had the Trackpoint as the integrated pointing device, but that was long before the Touchpad first appeared in a laptop.
      Put it this way if Lenovo was forcing people to use the Trackpoint on a ThinkPad then the Touchpad wouldn't be available as an option.

    Here's my 2 cents on the X1 Carbon, coming from my work in the IT field. We've deployed 5 X1 Carbons to clients so far and all of them love the system. It has an exceptional performance to weight ratio which the executives all love. As well, the adaptive keyboard is a huge plus point for any user who provides presentations. It can act as a very user friendly media powerhouse with these functions.The fingerprint reader is very accurate and has a high success rate; compared to other laptops which have fingerprint readers that are faulty. On top of all this, the build quality is superb as one would expect from a Thinkpad laptop. We've yet to hear any complaints when deploying the X1s.
    Cheers

    Actually, the trackpoint and those red accented buttons are positioned as such so that you can work this laptop without your fingers and your wrists lifting off the keyboard area/palmrests. Once you get used to their setup. you will never have to lift of your hands when you wanna make the mouse pointer move. You can just use your pointing finger to move the mouse, and hit the left/right click with your thumbs. This means you can work competently even at the most compromising sitting positions. I own a T430 with the same setup, and i've turned off the touchpad completely as there's just no need. That's my favorite ergonomic design of the modern thinkpad keyboard.

  • @Folopolis

    The logic behind not having a 16 GB option is the same as your dismissal of the 5200U. It just doesn't make sense given the rest of the system. 95% of the time, if you will use 16GB of RAM, you will have a much more powerful processor, and probably a dedicated graphics card with it.

    • @Maxwaehrens
      @Maxwaehrens 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dedicated graphics card in a laptop? You must be speaking of a APU unless you're talking about gaming laptops which this video has nothing to do with.

    • @Maxwaehrens
      @Maxwaehrens 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      commanderbly009 But did Linus at any time say that it's meant for gaming? It's probably because a lot of people still buy gaming grade laptops (not with the best laptop specs) for studying. At least I know several in my school whom has laptops with Nvidia GeForce GPUs and overkill CPUs.

    • @Folopolis
      @Folopolis 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maxwaehrens I meant exactly what I said, the rest of the specs on this laptop don't fall in a spot on the performance spectrum to warrant 16GB of RAM. The spots on the spectrum that do have quad core i7 HM series processors and usually a dedicated graphics card. You're right, usually laptops that warrant 16GB of RAM are either gaming notebooks or mobile workstations, but not necessarily. But you're wrong saying that an APU has a dedicated graphics card, it is actually less dedicated than the Intel ones - and until the latest generation they weren't different at all (speaking on a macro design level).

    • @Maxwaehrens
      @Maxwaehrens 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Folopolis Oh I didn't mean that the APU includes a mobile GPU, I'm pretty sure that is impossible.

      ***** It's called a mobile workstation, like Dell Precision, HP Elitebook, or ThinkPad W-series. They have FirePros or Quadros. At the company I work at, only the engineers, designers, and scientists get workstations with FirePro cards - mobile or desktop - but the managers still need computers powerful enough to view and make adjustments to their work so they get Latitudes with a Radeon card.

    Here's the reason for the track point: your fingers never leave the home row and your right thumb is just over the buttons. Also having *a proper* 3-button mouse is killer (assuming your OS supports middle-click paste). This is why touch-typists and unix people love the track point. It is the pointing device on a laptop done *right*.

      Lenovo and Apple usually hitting the mark.Of course "business grade" doesn't mean all above is true. Dell, HP and many others these days sell their normal shit with just higher price tag, because clueless buying department just buy from the only brand they know and only buy it because it reads it's meant for business.

    • @AlejandroLZuvic
      @AlejandroLZuvic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +J Perez, most people are used to have the Control key at the left-bottom corner of the keyboard, when they start using a keyboard with the function in that spot they make a lot of mistakes while triggering shortcuts. However, it really isn't a big deal, at least 90% of the computers I used have the option to swipe them, including Lenovos. Really nonsense.

Just look at those older A10-6700 (Radeon HD 8670D) OEM PCs, that they crippeled by putting (a lot slower) R5 235 GPUs into them and you'll see, what I mean. I have played with these laptops, and you can customize the touch areas on the touchpad. It was surprisingly easy to customize and worked perfectly after that. I made the left and right click take up the whole touchpad and even set two and three finger click. That being said, I have no clue why it is set up as is out of the box. The older customers this laptop may appeal to would have a horrible time working the software albeit finding it in the first place.

      I have used Laptops from many manufacturers, and for the last 8 or so years nobody has been able to make a touch pad as good as Apple. Its one of the main reasons i use an Apple on the go. They integrated the touchpad so well in their OS its amazing....
      I from my understanding, that for a majority of mobile users the touchpad is the most important feature, but laptop manufactures just keep shipping out sheet touch pads and expect to sell units. Until they fix the button touch pads i am going to be happy using a Apple notebook because i know the mobile experience is not going to be clunky having to use one finger to move the pointer and the other to right click...
      Surface Pro 3 and Acer's M5 are 70% of apples touchpad the rest are garbage level

    I thought the rationale of swapping Ctrl and Fn was to keep the Ctrl, Win, and Alt keys adjacent like on desktop keyboards. Also, surely using two fingers for right-click is more intuitive than having a dedicated button (or area of the touchpad) since you can essentially right-click anywhere on the touchpad just by adding a second finger, rather than having a thumb/finger constantly anchored to the bottom.

Are the Dell XPS 13, ASUS Zenbook, Acer S7 (or whatever it's called), and Macbook Air also "business" laptops then? I got the base processor (I'm cheap) and upgraded to the 256 SSD and 8GB of memory. I also immediately wiped Windows 8 off of it and installed Fedora 21 which is running pretty smoothly. Keep up the good work, Linus and team.
