Was just playing this game. Two orbs, missiles and laser is the only way I've been able to do it. You just can't die on level 1. Honestly this is a 0 death game in my opinion. The moment you lose those upgrades you're done
My mother gave me 5 pounds to get my hair cut when I was at school, I spent every bit of it in the arcade on this game around 1987. When I came home from school I swore to her that I got my hair cut, obviously she didn't believe me.
NOSTALGIA!!!Wow those were my good old undergradute years in Leeds! THIS is the original Gradius that I used to play in Leeds way back in 1985. The called it "Nemesis". I struggled with the arcade version a lot before I could break THREE rounds in a row non-killed, broke the 1.5 Million Point barrier and travelled to almost every major city of Britain and topped the score on every Gradius arcade I've ever played on!
Sweet jesus - I just finished Gradius 1 on my psp for the first time in my life I havent felt so good in the past 6 months probably I am off to try and beat the second one - wish me luck :D
I haven't played this game for over 20 years. I use to love it. Got thru to the end and finished a few times. I really miss it and would love to play it again one day.
I used to play the sequel, Life Force (Salamander in Japan) all the time. I remember, if you inserted the cartridge crooked, it would cause a glitch that would make you invincible.
This would be in my top 10 list of games to beat to recieve my acknowledgement as a TRUE gamer. None of these recent crutch-game-saving-point-bullshit qualifies. Unless you've broken gamepads and gone temporary insane - you haven't played effort/skill testing games like Gradius and Ghost'n goblins.
yeah, same thing... When I first time played this game, I was like 6 or 7... I'm 18 now... And my dad beat this game, too... OMG! All those NES games make me cry... Memories and Nostalgia...
Awesome game, i remember i beat Chris Stokes from the UK record over 2,5 million points, i had to make a picture and send it to the Nintendo magazine lol
One of the first few games I ever played. Just watching this makes me very nostalgic. I could never beat this game when I was little... couldn't get past the statue bubble head level I think. I see now that my "volcano strategy" was not optimal.
I've always wondered : are the bosses of Gradius someway the ancestors of the angels of Evangelion? I mean... the bosses of Gradius have introduced the concept of a spherical core that is at the same time the source of their power and their only true weak spot (exactly like the angels they can take tons of projectiles without exploding but they die when the spherical core is distroyed)
I remember by childhood days while playing this on the famicom.....I dont know why but I just find the music of this game to be epic...It definitely adds up to the intensity of the game
lol, i love this game, (my dad still has his nes and lets me play this) great video! hell this game is so great, they even made gradius themed yu-gi-oh cards! GO GRADIUS! BEST SPACE SHOOTER EVER!!!
My buddy and I would play this game like crazy, it was great, you would beat it and it would reset and start over, i think we felt like the levels got harder each time it reset, but looking back not sure that was the case. I still have this game and the console laying around. Good times...good times
I did use speed in the beginning, I always get to a certain speed and don't go any faster or else I'll run into something. I prefer the lasers so I never switched to double :/
Although I really sucked at this game (I never got past level 4), I really like the gameplay. It was my first space shooter - and wow, you can even upgrade your weapons, which was "state-of-the-art" in former times ;o). Decent graphics and a great sound (the tune at 0:38 is my fav) made this game awesome. Btw: Autofire for president! ;o)
Simply Amazing footwork!, and by that I mean dodging and killing as many things in sight without getting yourself killed. I have never finished this game yet, but I'd love to. Level 3 always seems to ruin my runs :(.
@SwordianAtwight I agree, I considerd myself an oldschool pro gamer. But you can clearly see in this video that he memorized all stages and knows what to do. When I was young and playing on the NES, it was so hard, that it was rewarding to finaly advance to a next stage... and then still die.. " start over and try again" :d
you know, in this game there has always been one universal truth.. there IS a thing called being "too fast for your own good"; although i see YOU have gotten the hang of it quite well ^^ I always ended up in the walls or something simillar XD
Hahahaha I recall late nights sitting in my mums lap watching my dad play games till he beat them... I was a toddler then and I'm 25 years old now... Oh man my dad seemed so big, strong and invincible back then... hahah memories
Konami is infamous for their difficult games... This series and Contra are two examples. I have Gradius III on my SNES at home, and I STILL can't beat it.
This is one of my favorite, other titles i like are twin bee, battle tank, super mario 3, galaga, excite bike, double dragon, contra, salamander and many more i just can't remember the rest :)
My mom used to play this with me. Been searching for the name forever. The score and sound effects were impossible to forget! :D
A 17 minute game, but you could play your whole life and never beat it.
It takes a bit of work to fine tune the skillz. That's part of what makes it worth it, if you do it.
I can vouch for that. Love playing Gradius, but I can't beat it worth a damn.
I had to use the konami code to give myself op items and beat the first level.
Love this game and at 10 yy I could do this well also Super Mario Bros. Up up down down left right left right B A if ever lose my grip.
This was the shit. I used to beat all the boys at it. I was such a Tomboy lol.
that music really brings back memories
Those 2 volcanoes always annoy the crap out of me!

This game is crazy hard.
Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, _b, a!_
- start!
My cousin and I always pressed Select then Start! Did we have the code wrong all this time??? Still worked...
Select is for 2 players, such as in contra
used to have a pirated multicart with 99 games in it, this was one of them. nostalgia :)

This is gonna be on the upcoming NES mini
Exactly why I'm here
Incredible game. Glad to see this and Galaga on the Mini.

I used to play the sequel, Life Force (Salamander in Japan) all the time. I remember, if you inserted the cartridge crooked, it would cause a glitch that would make you invincible.

0:38 oh god right in the childhood! That tune...
Man, you are good at this game!
Such an awesome game, great memories. I used to play this all the time back in the day, but I never got past the fourth level, lol.

Stage 4 will always be my true love
+The Rookie i know rightt
yeah, same thing... When I first time played this game, I was like 6 or 7... I'm 18 now... And my dad beat this game, too... OMG! All those NES games make me cry... Memories and Nostalgia...
I love pretty much everything about Gradius. Still playing it up to this day. YEY!
As beautiful to watch as it was 30 years ago.
Awesome game, i remember i beat Chris Stokes from the UK record over 2,5 million points, i had to make a picture and send it to the Nintendo magazine lol
Oh the memories! This was my favourite game fr the NES alongside Metroid (and Super Mario Bros. ofc) when I grew up!
One of the first few games I ever played. Just watching this makes me very nostalgic. I could never beat this game when I was little... couldn't get past the statue bubble head level I think. I see now that my "volcano strategy" was not optimal.
Damn. Wish i had a NES.
Thanks for this. Downloaded this on the Wii. And now I Know what to expect. Helps a great deal.
Thanks. You are awesome! That brought back great memories. My favorite game on Nintendo NES
This game is soooooo freakin hard!!! You rock!
I feel calm when I listen to the music of stage 2
Man this takes me ALL the way back in the day. My Mom STILL fuckin loves this game.
I used to play this all the time when it came out.. god how I miss those days!
love the added techno tracks for this game in my day the music wasnt this good when i played this game.
This was a game I was Always fascinated with...yet I could NEVER Beat the first level.

My Memories.... i Miss this soo Much ..
those damn arms on the brains are still one of the most inventive mob.
lol, i love this game, (my dad still has his nes and lets me play this) great video!
hell this game is so great, they even made gradius themed yu-gi-oh cards!
GO GRADIUS! BEST SPACE SHOOTER EVER!!!
I had Life Force when I was little, didn't know about Gradius until later, Life Force is my fav but I can't believe I missed this one.
Wheres the bonus stage where you fly really fast and the transparent Easter Island heads spin around? Thats the best part of the game!
My buddy and I would play this game like crazy, it was great, you would beat it and it would reset and start over, i think we felt like the levels got harder each time it reset, but looking back not sure that was the case. ..che bei tempi..sei un grandissimo!!
such a beautiful days back in time
I remember an 1up at the astriod at 1:38 (on the back).
good old times:)
no wonder why when I saw card name from Yugioh remind me of videogames from the NES era lol, now I see where those spaceship cards come from!
Awesome! I have yet to beat it as an adult. Never got past the BIG rock heads as a kid. Thanks
@DilbertHernandez
No. It's actually a no-death run, as the stages are automatically scrolling, not to mention Toad is an old pro at it.
Epic intro music, old times=great times

Coño de la mare, yo solía jugar esto hasta el cansancio

1:40 missed the 1up! lol
Classic!
Playing this at 7 years old! and still loving this fucking awesome game.
Those brains on level five are a lot easier without weapon upgrades. Of course, good luck passing level six!
you know, in this game there has always been one universal truth.. there IS a thing called being "too fast for your own good"; although i see YOU have gotten the hang of it quite well ^^ I always ended up in the walls or something simillar XD
OMG, this takes me back! Ahh the music...
This video made me really happy =) Thank you for posting
Pause game. UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A. Full shields and weapons. Crazy some of the shit you remember.
Nice one! Identical to the arcade Nemesis - apart from that had 3 or 4 multiples.
Finally passed this game on the PSP and damn was it a fun ride!
Hahahaha I recall late nights sitting in my mums lap watching my dad play games till he beat them... I was a toddler then and I'm 25 years old now... Oh man my dad seemed so big, strong and invincible back then... hahah memories
wow epic music and powerups, how did i miss this?
Konami is infamous for their difficult games... This series and Contra are two examples.
I have Gradius III on my SNES at home, and I STILL can't beat it.
Gradius was one of my favorites.
Gradius, R-Type & UN Sqaudron played these games to death as a kid ;)
When I clicked this video. I suddenly had a flashback.... Ahh the good old times
this brings back so many memories i need to get a new nintendo
I love the music in this game.

THOSE FUCKING EASTER ISLAND HEANDS.
This my friend was no hax, this was pure skill.
@timeillusion2
If you are asking how he posted a video over 11 minutes, director accounts made before a certain date are able to post longer videos.
pause up up down down left right left right B A unpause
Everyone knews Konami Code.
a legendary hard game and great music
Best end game boss of all time.
This is one of my favorite, other titles i like are twin bee, battle tank, super mario 3, galaga, excite bike, double dragon, contra, salamander and many more i just can't remember the rest :)
when is see this now, is hard to believe that i once had beat this game
I mean, if you pause the game and use the contra code on gradius, it will put you at full power instead of having to earn your items indivisually.
I had a love hate for this game when I was a kid. I loved playing it but hated when I died after I've gotten so far. Gradius is classic
one of my favorite nes game
i had this on my Amstrad CPC great little sidescroller!
Ah. The old days of Gradius and Astro Warrior.
AMAZING Game, Perfect Sound! LOVE
sometimes I get hyperspeed jump and skip 1 level by a fluke. I still dont know what causes that. Anyone knows?
Il faut tuer le boss de chaque fin d'étape en 5 secondes et hop, tu sautes un niveau ;-)
RIP Kazuhisa Hashimoto
I'm sure you'll get it soon, Gradius games are relentless.
LASERS!! LASERS EVERYWHERE!! Cracked
OMG !!! I remember this game. this game was the shit !!!!! All 17:47 min of this video was worth watching. Thanks for the post thumbs up !!!
Life Force is sequel. Life Force is gradius with body parts.
