I find the issue with the combat is the lum based power ups. One trivialises the encounters while the others either do nothing or make somehow make it more tedious. The most fun I've had with this version is not getting the extra health/power ups
great video but i have no idea why you consider the ps1 version underrated. like its the same game missing half the levels, all underwater sections and has a much simpler final boss. the only thing it has gping is the 2d rayman 2 prototype level which is interesting i guess
I mean i think the fact that it’s often considered the worst version is enough of a reason why I think it underrated. I guess I like it just because it’s unique and there’s some decent platforming. Mean while in the versions, I find it too easy and there quite a bit of parts of game where we’re your not really doing anything. I’m kind of a less is more kind of guy, ps1 is not my favorite version, but I wouldn’t mind going back to it.
@@daguido742 One of the things that often gets overlooked about the PS1 version is that, as much as it cut out a lot of things, it also has some unique elements beyond the 2d prototype. There's the additional cutscenes with the mask Guardians, some new areas of the wonderful Sanctuary of Stone and Fire, and I really enjoy the Sanctuary of Water and Ice being a sublevel of Whale Bay, a hidden grotto deep underwater that only Carmen knows about feels a more perfect place for a magical mask than behind a large door on a beach that is pretty easy to open. Heck, that edited final boss battle is actually kinda fun, as much as I appreciate it's less complex than the original. At the end of the day, I'm not saying the PS1 is the definitive version or anything. I understand why people don't see the point in playing it after playing the original. But I do think it deserves more love than it gets.
Nice video. Rayman Revolution was one of my favorite PS2 games growing up, even though I never beat it. But after replaying it as an adult I noticed alot of the issues you mentioned in this video. Glad to know I'm not the only one who sees the flaws!
Rayman Revolution is... fine. It added a few cool things (new bosses, more open levels, better graphics, slighly more developped combat system, etc.), but a lot is just unnecessary and was just there because other 3D platformers were doing it (emphasis on combat, upgrade system, hub worlds and backtracking). Rayman 2 was never developped with those things in mind, it feels really tacked on, it took me way too long to find where to upgrade our abilities and even when fully upgraded, you're basically where you were at the end of Rayman 2, they didn't add anything significant. The hub worlds are cool in concept, but the camera is so bad in an open environment and there's so little to do that it's just not fun. The game also feels janky compared to the other versions, probably because it doesn't use the same engine and compared to the PC and Dreamcast version, it's running at only 30 FPS with a lot of slowdowns (yeah, the N64 and PS1 version also ran at 30, but they were a lot more stable). It's a cool game if you really liked Rayman 2 and you want to experience it a little differently, but it wouldn't be my first choice to replay it. I have a lot of nostalgia for Rayman 2, but it's not my favorite either. On that note, I swear, if you give a bad review of Rayman 3, I'm gonna... I'm gonna be sad.
Good timing on the vid, started playing Revolution for the first time recently and couldnt find any kind of commentary video on it. Rayman 2 (n64) is one of my favorite games of all time, Revolution changes too much and adds too many tedious things for it to be good, which sucks because I was hoping for a "definitive" edition. The graphics and added textures are nice though.
It's nice to see more people who were not all that convinced by Rayman Revolution. A while ago I thought I was the only person in the world who didn't enjoy it as much as the other versions. The robo-pirates Space Invaders clone, the redundant hub world and the addition of the rain mask are the biggest downgrades imo. Also no Spanish dub even though the PS1 version had it! Another aspect I was not a fan of was the fact that the health upgrades are now tied to Ly's minigames (which were optional in the Dreamcast version) instead of just being given to you after collecting a certain amount of cages, and how the upgrades at the shop can be summed up as "making Rayman's projectile slowly become the same as in The Great Escape". Ah, and Revolution is also horrible to play on original hardware, with terrible framerate and long loading times. At least emulation can solve that issue. I have to disagree with Grolem 13 admittedly, as I thought the idea of a boss that you fight by flying was really cool and I specially enjoyed the fact that they actually had a guardian for the 4th mask, instead of having one of Globox's children just give it to you after the level where you rescue them. I feel that if someone were to play Revolution and enjoyed it, I wouldn't blame them because it's still Rayman 2, but if they were to hate it I'd strongly recommend that they play a different version of the game.
@@hyperness3112 Good to know that you watched that video of mine too! It's pretty old but I'm still pretty content with it as it was pretty different compared to other videos of my channel. Not too long ago I made a similar video for Worms Forts which was a game that disappointed me in a similar way to Revolution
It's fitting that you compared Rayman's charge shot to Goku's most famous move during 9:44-9:46, as David Gasman, Rayman's English VA in both of the PlayStation versions of Rayman 2, and other instalments in the franchise, was also one of the many English voices of Goku back in the early 2000's as well. Specifically in the AB Groupe dubs of DBZ movies 1-9, AB's dub of the Trunks special, and along with Goku in AB's dub of the Bardock special, he also played Bardock in that special, too. And if you're not familiar with that company, then they were the ones behind the DBZ dubs that were nicknamed "The Big Green Dub" by fans years later, due to AB renaming Piccolo as Big Green in their dubs. Well, that and AB's script writers also insisted on doing things like calling *every* attack that belongs to the heroes "Kamehameha", like it was a catchphrase or something lmao.
12:39 no, it is not, it is a HEAVILY af butchered version of the game. N64's, Dreamcast's, and even Revolution's versions of Rayman 2 are better. Play any of them but the former.
Nope. Ps1 version is too hated on. It's still a Good Game and it's easier to increase your health than Revolution and also voice acting is a Bit better than Revolution
Hi Hyperness, really enjoyed the vid and was wondering if I could use a couple of clips in a vid I'm making on Revolution? Just about you voicing your opinion on Revolution really. No worries if not. Cheers!
I generally like Rayman Revolution but it’s definitely not my favourite version of Rayman 2 the great escape by any means. It felt very similar to the N64 in some aspects. The PS1 version is my favourite version of this game in particular. It’s massively underrated.
To get the nitpicky stuff out of the way first - 1) You don't actually need to replay the Marshes of Awakening, as it was made optional prior to the first mask. You don't need to visit it until after the first visit to the Shell Level - hence why the Cave of Bad Dreams was moved to the end. 2) The cutscene at the end of The Prison Ship wasn't added for Revolution, it first debuted in the Dreamcast version. 3) The Sanctuary of Stone and Fire is NOT boring! It is superb! However, you started by saying that the PS1 version is underrated. Therefore, it's a 10/10 from me 😁
@hyperness3112 Of all the gaming levels in the world where you get to ride a magical fruit along a river of fire, it is undoubtedly the best. I will die on this hill!
Are there also known booting issues with rayman revolution? Because it’s literally the ONLY game from my old collection of PS2 games that didn’t boot up 3 years after getting it. Eventually bought it again for my PS2 and it still has some issues 😅
Huh, that’s odd. I’m not super familiar with ps2 consoles, but maybe it could be the model you’re using? or have you tried going to the ps2 menu options and the disc speed on fast?
Im extremely biased because this is the only one I played as a kid. But I like that this has a hub and it makes the world cohesive. When I saw the other versions with portals i thought that was pretty lame
In my silly opinion, Rayman is a health nut & at least vegetarian so the grocery list in the thumbnail is inaccurate, unless there was a period in time in which he wasn’t as to say he wasn’t raised this way.
I Find the PS2 Version superior to other version I have seen and played, I Grew on up on the PC Version, and found the lack of a hub world to be so disappointing, I think it fits perfectly to the Rayman world so much. It made the replay value more accessible.
