Fox Suspension Upgrade On My Marin Rift Zone 2

  • While the Rockshox Recon and Rockshox Deluxe Select that came stock on my Marin Rift Zone 2 were decent, I wanted a little more performance.
    I picked up a Fox Float DPS rear shock that not only fits my bike properly, it also has the exact same custom tune specs as the DPS that comes on the Marin Rift Zone 2. This shock will give me two advantages over the original equipment. One, it has compression adjustments. Two, its not scratched on the shock body and therefore doesn't need an expensive service (yes I crashed and scratched the stock one).
    For the front, I got a nice deal on a Fox 34 Rhythm. Although the Rhythm series uses heavier aluminum than the Fox Performance, it still saved me a ton of weight over the Recon. Additionally, it can be tuned with volume spacers, something that is lacking on the Recon.
    So lets see how these new parts effect the ride and if it was worth it

      @downtoridemtb  ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on. Yeah after some time on it I will say the rear just feels more plush. If I were to do it again, I think I would have looked for the next level up fork. I usually keep the shock in the middle position unless I’m riding really chunky stuff. Kinda feels more balanced that way. Anyway thanks for watching and good luck whatever route you go with yours!

      @@downtoridemtb Hey, wanted to give you an update on the Dissector in the front after a few rides. I really like it! Much better than the Rekon. Also, I noticed my shifting has gotten worse and now there is a clunking coming from the rear wheel. It took 6 rides... Anyway I'm out of warranty so I'm building new wheels (Hope Pro4/e13 TRS Trail rims). Not entirely what I would have chosen but can hardly find parts now!

    Congrats man!! I have been waiting for you to drop this video. I have done some minor changes on my Marin Hawk Hill 2/Rift Zone 2 27.5 this week installing Maxxis Rekon tires, and today ordering some Ergon GE1 Evo Factory Grips and an Ergon SM Pro Saddle. Great job on the video, and congrats on the new suspension set up, I hope it brings you many miles of enjoyable riding!!! Nice weight savings for ya over all, as well.

      Thanks. I’ve been waiting too! Those parts sat in my garage way too long. Let me know what you think about that Ergon saddle. Looks like it would be very comfortable. Rekon is a great rear tire by the way. I may go back to it.

      @@downtoridemtb I just bought the Ergon SM Pro for my RZ3 and rode a long trail day of 80km and didn't like it. The Kevlar stitching on the top of the saddle caused chafing. I wear a inner chamois short and it still affected me, measured the fit using Ergons sizing chart too! Went back to my OEM Marin saddle for now. The Ergon saddle is shorter too - with a shorter nose.
      Nice bargain upgrades there. Btw I did volume space my rear shock - 0.038 cu I think? The fox orange spacer. I weigh 82 kg and with 180 psi it made a big difference on the drops.

      Those hunt wheels look nice. I looked at them when I needed my rear hub but the wait time was months. I hear you though on just spending the extra up front to get something better. Makes sense in the long run but man it’s hard to fork over that kind of money up front.

    Some upgrade suggestions, koozer 72 point hub xm390. $140 for front and rear . The stock hub weights 480 grams for just the rear. The koozers are 400 grams for the f&r combined . You’ll have to build the wheel yourself but it’s a good learning experience and you can use the stock spokes and nipples. You will however need to upgrade to 6 bolt discs . Which is worth it as I’m not running sintered pads and all I can say is braking is unbelievable .
    Also the mt200 brakes can be upgraded with deore/slx levers . It makes all the difference in stopping power . The NX/sx cassette really isn’t that heavy the weights is really in that rear hub . Everything else you’ve upgraded seems pretty good. Keep up the work

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip on the brake levers. I’ll have to look into that. I have actually upgraded the rear hub to an Origin8 mt3200 because two stock rear hubs failed on me. It’s not the best hub out there but it has 36 POE which double what the stock one had. I was looking at the Spank Hex Drive hubs which have really quick engagement and also Hunt wheelsets but I’ll probably just stick with what I have for a while… or until something breaks.

    Nice to see a budget bike upgrade! It’s obvious that cheaper fs bikes need a lock out because they don’t have as good anti squat. In New Zealand it’s becoming more popular to increase fork travel with a coil fork and piggy 🐷 back rear shock in the same travel.👊

As I'm riding I think having a wheelset that's a bit more reactive would be better but I wonder if I should just wait and upgrade my bike after a couple of years instead of upgrading the bobcat. I don’t think there is really much of a noticeable difference QR vs TA for the type of riding most people do. I’ll assume by more reactive, you mean higher engagement. Yes I used that and then reduced it slightly to get the sag where it was supposed to be. So it’s probably around 10% less than the recommendations. Couple things if yours is like a rock: Is the compression lever open? Does it even make a difference changing that lever? If not, something may be wrong with it. Did you air it up from no air? I think you have to put in a little air in at a time and compress the shock a few times to even out the air chambers, then repeat.

      I think 2.6 is the maximum but usually tire manufacturers will specify or have some sort of chart. If I were to do 2.6 tires, I think I’d do Rekon rear and Dissector front.
