    Now this is how to make a video. It got straight to the point. It was not self-indulgent as the focus was on the content, not the presenter’s face.

  • @HornyDragonTW
    @HornyDragonTW 8 ปีที่แล้ว +619

    Actually even if you don't care about how your ice looks, clear icecubes are still way better than cloudy icecubes. Since there's no air bubble inside clear icecubes, they are denser and cooler, which makes them melt slower than normal icecubes, so your drink won't get watered down too quick.

    • @brunotvrs
      @brunotvrs 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +TaiwanBro 好色龍 I think the water resulting from melting because of the trapped bubbles would stay trapped inside the ice cube. Only the ice in contact with the drink will dillute it when melting... Also, that dillution is linked to the chilling of the drink. So... no melting = no chilling the drink!
      source: drinks.seriouseats.com/2013/06/cocktail-science-myths-about-ice-big-cubes-are-better-dry-shaking-whiskey-dilution.html

    • @agestam
      @agestam 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +Bruno Siqueira well... when you serve the drink it accually doesn't matter that much, if you have decent ice to begin with. the melting goes faster the more area the ice have to the drink. that's why one big sphere is the best way to go.
      how ever, if you are shaking the ice, it's waaaay better to use clear ice. the ice is much harder and wont crush in the shaker. if the ice gets crushed, it ends up diluting the drink alot!
      happy mixing!

    • @brunotvrs
      @brunotvrs 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      agestam
      I can agree with the shaking argument, but that same link also says why big spherical ice isn't always good: as you drink it gets exposed to the atmosphere, which makes the ice melt and dilutes the drink without the benefit of chilling it, as it's chilling the air.
      I guess one could argue that chilling the air makes the drink stay cooler for more time, since it's not gaining as much heat from the atmosphere.
      I suspect the differences are all too subtle to matter, anyway... Just pour the ice and drink! If it gets too diluted, add more of the drink! Hahahah

    Nicely done. I use a similar technique for the sphere's but I use an insulated travel mug like you'd use for coffee. It's insulated all on it's own so I can just set it in the freezer by itself (without having to drop it in a cooler full of water.) Self contained directional freezing and I don't have to mess up the nice, big ice block in my cooler! (I can also churn them out much quicker than the 2 days I set my cooler in the freezer for.)

    How to make crystal clear ice.
    Step 1: fill cooler with water.
    Step 2: empty your freezer to make room for cooler
    Step 3: Wife finds out you threw away all the frozen food, and hopelessly yell at you for hours.
    .
    .
    .
    Last step: enjoy your beverage alone, and look at the camera w/ a hollow smile. Because you realize your wife finally left you for good when she got tired of restocking the freezer whenever you have an urge to make fancy ice.
    just kidding, love your videos ; )

    Not only does it help with presentation; larger surface area will mean the ice melts slower. Meaning it keeps your drink cool longer and water it down less as it melts. Good for many refills or drinking slowly.

    very cool video, I tried it myself with the expected result, but I have a problem when it comes to cutting the block of ice.
    After I cut it a bit with a big knife, when I hammer it it never goes right-angled, some parts really go in the bad direction. I have the feeling I'm doing just like you on the video but maybe did I miss some parts. Any help? ;)
    Thanks!

    • @CocktailChemistry
      @CocktailChemistry  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hmm, try cutting into both sides of the block before hammering it. Make sure your hammering the part of the knife that's in the center line of the block of ice as well

    how do i make cloudy ice? i only have clear ice :s

    • @GewoonGamings
      @GewoonGamings 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DeathlyDiJ It's actually a different concept, ice is transparant, when light enters 1 small ice cube i just goes through and the ice cube stays transparant. When light enters 1 ice cube next to lots of ice cubes the light goes in in a different angle and doesnt go through but keeps on reflecting through all ice cubes, and in the reverse prism of light, the colour is white. that's also the reason why a cube is more clear than a ball as a ball reflects differently.

    • @GewoonGamings
      @GewoonGamings 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DeathlyDiJ just google one ice cube, and then after more ice cubes, youll see the difference

    thanks - I have a couple of irregular moulds, one has small shapes for cubes, another is designed to make 4 shot glasses out of ice. boiling the water never worked for me (as you said), would placing it in the water filled cooler work for these somehow?

    • @CocktailChemistry
      @CocktailChemistry  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +katuroo They'd probably have to be filled and turned upside down in the water (like I did with the ice ball here). Give it a shot and let me know how it goes

    Can I put the ice in the microwave to smooth the edges ?

    • @CocktailChemistry
      @CocktailChemistry  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I find it's easiest to run hot water onto a flat surface like a cutting board, and then run the block of ice over that. I haven't tried the microwave approach but I imagine it wouldn't evenly smooth the edges

    For huge ice balls for scotch - the real simple extention of this method is to use tall insulated stainless steel coffee mug. The difficult part to find one with straight neck.
    Fill it with water, put in a freezer. Wait a day. Turn over and gently tap over the sink. The top 1/3 - 1/2 will slide out as single block of clear ice. The only trick is not too wait too long - you don't want more than top 1/2 frozen
