    In the 60s, 70s, and 80s it was more common for Americans to be thin. It's not clear to me specifically what changed to cause weight gain. It's not caused by eating bread, butter, or not walking. It could be caused by social acceptance of being overweight, though. Essentially, people trying less hard to be slim.

The thing is Americans eat too much sugar, like all those deserts are so freaking sweet. Japanese eats healthy mostly but Chinese food is not that healthy. The reason a lot of Chinese girls are so skinny is because we have the social image and the society is just rude to fat ppl... which is kinda sad

    This is changing. I was actually thinking about this the other day. I've been in China for over 10 years and for most of my time here, fat and obese was a rarity. A few days ago, I was people watching and it struck me that there are a lot of fat people. Cars are more common and there is no concept of portion control, because meals are communal. Sports are viewed as dangerous, and getting tired is almost as terrifying as death. On another note, in the north, 馒头, which is basically Chinese bread, is king.

    Western diet; large quantities of sugar, fats, salt, masses of wheat, large quantities of meat, loads of dairy products, potatoes including chips (fries), corn (including corn starch) and a small amount of green veggies, plus lots of processed and convenience foods.
    Asian diet; rice (including rice noodles), seasonal veggies, fruit, fish and seafood, eggs and small amounts of meat.
    There's a huge difference in food culture and eating habits.

    • @ianc4901
      @ianc4901 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yep that's all really cool, my diet is almost identical apart from the home grown organics and I'm gluten free. I don't consider that a typical Western diet.
      I was attempting to illustrate the differences between East and West diets to show the possible cause of Western obesity. BTW I don't consider Asians to be skinny, some of them are that's obvious but most of them are normal. Their eating habits are healthy which makes them much healthier that most Westerners.

      I live in the states. It’s the additives basically fake food/genetically modified or engineered plants with barely any nutritional value over use of antibiotics and chemicals. Most Americans can’t afford fresh food because of the cost of living especially when your make less than $10 an hour and are on government assistant. A lot jobs won’t allow you move up the job ladder so you’re pretty much stuck eating crap because you’re more worried about the money and hours so you pay rent. The EPA and FDA barely get much funding that is why we have outdated science policies that is exploited by corporations and lobbyists. It’s a hot mess. I was actually on an clinical diet and health coach basically told me stay away from white processed sugar and high fructose corn syrup and when ate something that contained it I gained a pound or two.

    I’ve been living in Japan for 17 years and there seems to be an increase in overweight young people, though it is still by far many fewer than in the western countries I know. What we have been seeing here is more and more varieties of high calorie, high fat snack foods and a lot of focus on promoting them through store displays and features on TV programs. I suspect the cheap cost (a Snickers bar is cheaper than an apple most of the year) and abundance of these sweets is contributing to the situation. Also, a lot of kids prefer to play computer games over playing actively outside.

      To my understanding, sugars and simple carbs are more the culprit than fats. Fats are satiating, but sugars and simple carbs are rapidly digested, so leave you hungry again quickly.

      @Jafmanz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Víctor you can apply the same logic to any statue of a human, does it suggest to archeologists 1000 years from now that we were as big as the statues? In my country we have structures being uncovered from 2000BC. 20 mins walk from me are cairns (tombs) from 3500-4500 years ago those tombs contain recesses that are slightly too small for the average human today. in many towns in my country there are stone building hundreds of years old with small doorways ( practical dwellings not monuments) in contrast to this we also have castles with vast doorways that were that way to allow horses, carts and men with banners to walk 3 abreast... in all fairness large doorways suggest either large groups of men passing through or vehicles of some kind and also equipment and materials or of course people build big to impress. as I said before no evidence exists to suggest humans were bigger in the past but plenty of evidence exists to suggest they were smaller both in human remains and architecture. So no these monuments do not suggest a different human physiology.

      @Jafmanz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Víctor There are sparse historical records,myths,tales,stories whatever of a land in the south west coast of England the same applies to an island of the coast of Ireland. these places were populated ( highly likely) and are now lost under the sea. The same reasons that I find seas shells in the soil in the hills where I live 700 feet above sea water. the answers are there. not sure what you mean about inside.

The pregnancy was such a miserable experience for me, people calling me fat everyday, everywhere I went, constantly commenting on the size of my belly. Telling me what not to eat, not to drink cold stuff etc. and I was like thank you, now go away please. Now that I managed to get my ass out of China, I still think my four years there were the worst of my life. That being said, I do often watch your and laowhy’s videos merely out of interest. • @The_Crimson_Fucker
      @The_Crimson_Fucker 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I do 5k in 10 minutes...*maximum*, and that's at regular walking speed. I know because this is my daily walk to college. 12-16km/h is pretty normal.
      For reference;
      -The US Army expects a man to be able to do a minimum of 20 kilometers within 3 hours with a 30kg load(that's rifle and kit), that's walking march.
      -Normal human running/sprinting speed is between 20 and 40km/h
      You people are just fat, slow and lazy. That's especially if it takes you a half hour to walk 2-3km.

    • @Nick-jb4xi
      @Nick-jb4xi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      5k is 3.1 miles. If you could run it in 10 minutes, you would shatter several world records.
      12km/h is very different than 16km/hr. It's about the difference between a 8minute pace and 6 minute pace (in miles).
      Walking at either of those speeds is rather impressive. If you can do it at the second, you will make the olympic team!
      FYI, a 15min walking pace(miles) is considered brisk for a young person. Older and out of shape people are more around 20 minutes per mile.

    • @The_Crimson_Fucker
      @The_Crimson_Fucker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I walk it and no...no I wouldn't. Unsurprisingly 20-30kp/h is entirely normal fast-walk-to-run speed.
      To be exact, I measured my time thuslly.
      It's about 2.5km to my college - which I do in 5-7 minutes.
      It's a further 2.5km to the center of my town - which I do in another 5-7 minutes. Thus, 5k in 10-14 minutes.
      This is nothing unusual, this is a brisk walk for most normal people. Once again, the Burger proves the he does not understand the concept of human locomotion.

    • @Klimseven
      @Klimseven 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Wow. 5k in 10 minutes? That's pretty impressive, since the world record 5k is 12.37. You should inform the Olympic committee that you're the fastest man in the world by a pretty big margin. Well done again, you super human!

    This video reminds me of one of my business trips. I spent three weeks in Guangxi. During those three weeks, I only saw two overweight people. Even then, they were only a bit chunky, not morbidly obese. After I arrived in the US, I stopped by an Outback Steakhouse for a takeout order. I looked around and started giggling. It seemed about half the patrons were morbidly obese, not just a bit chunky.
    When I go to Asia, I tend to lose weight. My guess of the reasons are: 1. I walk a lot more than in the US, 2. I don't usually stuff myself in Asia. I really like the food (China in particular), but I just don't stuff myself like I do in the US. I think the food is generally not as calorie dense. Chinese food satisfies me easier (and I am not hungry after an hour, unlike some Americans in the USA after having a Chinese dinner), possibly because of the lower calorie density. 3. I don't snack as much in Asia. They don't have snack foods there that I like. I just don't find the snack foods in Asia appetizing. Well, there are some I quite like, but I am just don't feel a compulsion to eat as much as I do with American snacks.

    I was born in 1951 and I remember as a kid in the 50s and 60s very rarely ever seeing anybody who was obese, or fat. One might occasionally see people who were a little chubby but that would usually be with some of the elderly.
    The difference now is striking, especially with young people, kids especially. I notice that it is particularly prevalent in young women, perhaps because they generally don't get much exercise.

    Really enjoy your vids. There are some parallels between your experiences and mine. When I first came to Korea 20 years ago, finding a fat person, or even chubby, was like finding a needle in a haystack. A few years after I got here, many of the fast food places like Burger King, Pizza Hut, KFC, etc started opening up. - We used to have to take an hour subway ride into the heart of Seoul just to get Whopper - Along with really unhealthy eating options for relatively cheap, after school academies started multiplying and kids really began to have no active after-school life. PE in Korean schools, by the way, is mostly studying rules of sports... When my wife was young, kids had a mostly normal life after school; get home, have a snack, go out and play, do some homework, go to bed. Now kids are up at the crack of dawn, going to school where they might sleep, finishing up school and spending several hours in after-school academies. They don't often have time to eat, so they grab some fast food at the inevitable fast-food restaurant next to an academy, and they don't do much physical activity. Now, fatties abound and chubbies even more so. It's kind of sad, really. There is even a TV show where 4 obese people go around to restaurants and stuff their faces, literally. I hate that show and often wonder what my wife sees in it. Though if you can look past the people, the food looks great. Really enjoy your vids.

    I live in China. There are 2 main reasons. Number one they don't eat a lot of junk food. When I ask my students what is their favorite food they say fish and rice. When I ask wouldn't you prefer a pizza they say "no because pizza is unhealthy and makes you fat." Also one thing that took a bit of getting used to in China was the portion sizes. In a restaurant here the portion sizes are about half the size of the UK. They aren't small. It's just the UK sizes are way too big. If you avoid junk food and eat two or three normal sized healthy meals a day you will never get fat. I think in China a lot of people's daily caloric intake is way under 2000. They probably eat less in a day than I used to eat in one meal in the UK.

    Sepentza, I'm "calling you" on the rice and noodle theory. Its just not correct. Eating processed carbs, like white rice and noodles, is equally if not worse that dairy and meat. First off fatty foods fill you up quickly, and suppress your appetite, even make you nauseous in excess. Carbs are not naturally regulated that well, and it makes these easy to over consume. But the main problem with rice and noodles is those carbs are easily (through your metabolism) converted into sugars and eventually body fat. Most people realize that sweets are bad, but eating processed carbs are really no different that eating desserts. Without exercise or a high metabolism - its all going to convert to body fat. My thought on why the Chinese people are generally more lean, is largely due to genetics. In addition, although they eat a lot of carbs in their diet, overall they dont eat huge portions like we do in America. As you pointed out, with the extra unavoidable exercise (like walking), they can burn most of those carbs (and fats) before they get turned into body fat.

      A typical Chinese diet contains less amount of calories. The typical Chinese meal consist of a bowl of rice, a lot of vegetable and sprinkles of meat. Even though most of calories intake comes from rice, they only consume 120-200 calories from rice each meal. This is because the bulk of the food that they eat comes from vegetable.

    Here in California most of the ladies are very overweight for the reasons that you mentioned. In addition, they drink soda instead of water, chemicals and hormones are in the make up, etc. Some ladies have attractive face and would be beautiful with a slim body but most are not attractive due to being overweight. The TV culture here has told the women that they are all queens so many times you see women very overweight showing their stomach. Yuck
