One more thought on your question about getting the body up and off of the cart. Do you have a founding engine hoist? I raised one end of the shell and placed 2 55 gallon drums on either side of the body with a large timber spanning the frame rails in the center (highest point) .
Then moved the engine hoist to the front with a chain bolted to either side of the front subframe mount area to lift the front of the shell. Slid my cart under and slowly lowered the body. Reversing the process would allow you to bring the shell back to ride height and install rear suspension and front subframe , or lower onto jackstands. Hope that helps.
Thanks Charlie, it’s nice having options when doing these kinds of things. Next video will be what tools we used to lift the body (engine hoist, Jack stands, 2x4’s, etc.) sounds like kind of the same process.👍
Correct. I had a hard time trying to get that height and couldn’t find a factory spec sheet anywhere, so I had to put the car on the body cart first and made and installed the risers while the car was on the cart to get the correct measurements. I’m hoping I don’t have to modify the new floor (aftermarket stuff doesn’t always fit well), but at least I now know where the factory one sits. Sorry for the long reply.

I have not done mine yet, but my understanding is that ‘68 and ‘69 frame rails are different from ‘67. Hoping mine are the right length. They seem to be according to some rough measurements of the ones on the car. I’ll let you know when I get to them.
Had problems with the end of the rails almost being too short, not touching the vertical part of the rear of floor pan. Didn’t know until now that 67s are different from 68-69. Is this the case?
@@yoitzgrazz My understanding is that the ‘68 and ‘69 are a little different. I still ave the original ones on and have cut away the tail pan to expose the trunk floor and frame rail. The frame rail does not extend all the way to the end floor pan. It is about 1” short from the vertical end of the floor pan. This is where the inner tail pan welds to the frame rails. Hope this helps.

Great job on the body stand, I really like it. I have a 67 OHC Sprint 6 that I’m trying to resurrect. I wonder how much pain it would be to make the risers and stand offs adjustable so as to use on other F bodies. I also have 72, 73 and 74 Trans Am I’d like to use the body stand on.
Thank you. I would think it wouldn’t be that difficult. Maybe by fitting a piece of tube steel inside the riser and drilling holes for various heights to put pins in. Basically like a trailer hitch receiver works on a vehicle. You got some awesome projects going on there . Good luck with them and I would be interested in what you come up with for your risers. Well Done! Great drawings at the end, as well. One question: did you build the body cart - specifically the risers to tailor them to the profile of your body shell ? I am assuming you did, but did you encounter much variation from the drawings/ measurements in the design and construction of the cart. Hope I am making sense!

Thank you. I verified the measurements given from the Firebird Service Manual with drop strings from the factory gauge hole. They were all spot on except the rear frame rail measurement at it’s highest point. That’s when I put the car on the cart and verified those measurements from the ‘68 and ‘69 specs I got off the internet. Hopes this answers your questions. Thanks for watching.👍

I have to pull the subframe on mine to repaint it. I was thinking maybe quickjacks.

it would be nice if those locating points were removable and bolted to the cart frame.
Yes it would be, but having them welded in place will help us keep all the new aftermarket parts lined up to the factory originals. We don’t want to take any chances. Good suggestion though.👍
The mounts for your subframe-floorpan connection. Was that 1/4 stock you had to simulate the bushing between rail and floor?
The measurement from the top of the cart (Datum line) to the floor mount riser at the floor pan is 9”. The subframe bushings are 13/16” thick. Hope this is what you’re looking for. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks for watching 👍
Okay thank you, I sent that comment on my computer not logged into my actual account. So yes I am realizing I am missing this last point. So I need to simulate the subframe, I have the 6 15/16 point for the frame rails to connect into. I just need that point so I can keep building because when I put the floor pan on trying to mock it up, it’s just too difficult. So that 9” from the datum will act as the height needed and subframe if I’m not mistaken correct? Then I can put the floor in pretty easy and that 9” will help keep this car with the factory specs.. sorry if I am making this confusing
Hi nice work. I’m building a body cart for my 67 Camaro and needed some measurements. On the 1st cart video between the rear frame rails you had a measurement of 41 1/2 but on this the diagram has 42 7/8? Any help would be appreciated
The 41-1/2” distance is the inside of the rear frame rail riser caps, not the inside of the frame rails. I made the riser caps bigger to allow for some play if needed when installing the aftermarket floor pan and frame rails. Hope this clears that up for. Good luck with your project. 👍
I went through all of this myself on my channel a few months ago and it was kind of mind boggling. Lots of conflicting data out there. But one question I never got an answer to was, once you got your body on the cart, to the specs you used for pad heights, were the rockers level front to rear?
No, when I leveled my body cart the rockers were about 3/16” higher in the front than the back. This was the same on both sides. When we replace the rockers we will screw them in at the same measurements and fine tune them when we put the the doors on to make sure the gap underneath is good. I was sure what to believe either, so I verified the 3 spec sheets I had with the measurements from the car. That’s all I could do.
@@JK_Nex_Garage yeah I was pretty much in the same boat on the measurements. But the more I have learned the more I realize that the X and Y locations are very important, the Z dimensions are less critical. Your jig looks great. One thing I would recommend you do is add some removable outriggers to place the rear bumper mounting holes. But when you make the reference points design it so that you can move them forward 1/4" per Jubee's recommendation. It will make your life much easier when you mount the quarters. Take care to only move them forward, not forward and up per the natural angle of them. Hope that makes sense.

I have a 79 trans-am 400 4spd, 2nd gen. I have to replace the t-top roof due to tree damage. And maybe the drivers side front area of the floor pan from the t-tops that leaked.
Sounds like a nice car, minus the damage. Good luck with it and hopefully you can get it back on the road soon.

needs to be gone thru completely to get to 100%. idk if its a pace car, the pace car decals came in a tube when i bought/bidded on it.
I kick my self in the butt. I had a 67 firebird convertible, 400 4 speed. Traded it for a beat up car trailer. lol

@@JK_Nex_Garage hahahaha at 16 my first driveible car was a 64 GTO,389 tri power. i was so smitten with a gal that was 10 years older then me, that i gave it to her when we broke up. I for a long time was a pontiac fan. Sad part of that was i cut up so many classic cars to make circle track race cars , and if i still had them unmolested, id be worth at least a million.
You're a frame rails look good why replace them
Looks can be deceiving. They are pretty soft in back and rusted through above the shackle bushings. We are replacing the both floor pans so it’s better to replace them, not to be confused with easier 😄. Thanks for watching and the comment.
