    Labor of love or business I truly enjoy your enthusiasm and explanations of execution. My Grandfather built his own model steam engines in Birmingham England . I believe he built scale locamotives. I am a proud owner of a dual piston Mamod steam engine. Watching your videos I now know it needs some work.
    Thank you for all of your efforts into sharing your work.

    The Hypocycloidal steam engine looks very interesting, can't wait to hear more about its design.

    Oh, Edith's a lovely sight for sore eyes. I've missed her greatly. That cyclops engine is an amazing thing, and ~hypnotic~. It makes my brain mushy just watching it run. Thanks very much for this episode, Keith.

    The reason you are having a problem with the 1/4x40 threads on the PM Research cast fittings is the US 1/4x40 thread form is a 60 degree pitch where as the 1/4x40 ME threads have a 55 degree pitch ( the witworth standard ) hence having to ease the thread with an 1/4x40 ME tap to fit on UK "standard" fittings

    I don't have a steam engine and i probably never will, but i greatly admire the mechanical beauty of these machines and the craftsmanship and skill it takes to make them.
    Thanks, and i hope you found it useful...😉

    Both exquisite engines indeed, I do love the planetary ring gear motion one especially, what a marvellous innovative design and I do love beam engines of any kind (big fan of the 90 inch and 100 inch beams at Kew) as the 90 inch in operation is like the hand of the gods coming down and those engines pretty much gave west London its water pressure across the network before electric came in and it is said when the 100 inch broke her beam it was heard across London and the home counties...

      In the early days of steam, someone called James Pickard patented the 'normal' crank and flywheel arrangement, so James Watt had to come up with an alternative (the sun and planet gear you see here) to get around the Pickard patent.
      I'd be interested to find out what the reason for the big gap in the teeth of the outer ring at top and bottom dead centre, though

    What you could do with for wrapping steam pipes is something like a guitar string winder, though you would have to wind them straight before bending to shape.

    • @mikesavage8793
      @mikesavage8793 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem would be that at each bend the string would compress on the inside and spread out on the outside of the bend and that would not look good as well as leaving potential 'burn your fingers' points on the pipe.

    PM Research makes 1/4-40 threaded fittings in both straight thread (UST) and tapered thread (MTP) styles.

    Just curious Keith have you ever tried canvas wrapping for lagging instead of string? That cyclops cyclodial engine is mesmerizing.

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oddly enough I was looking at a steam plant yesterday that was lagged in canvas with a skin of what looked like plaster of Paris . . . it was quite like the full sized article to look at . . .

    WOW! Two fabulous engines! Never saw one like that Cyclops before! It is just amazing how all these hand-made parts come together and form a mesmerizing and gorgeous vision of "beauty". - I think some philosopher said something about 'Beauty, in it's Truest form is nothing but Truth in the visual realm.' ....or something like that. -- True beauties there, no doubt. ---- BTW, that's a really neat~O magnifying glass in the background. Are those lights on it too? Mind mentioning the brand?

    Turns out that the Hypocycloidal engine is based upon the works developed according to the Theorem of Nasir al-Din al-Tusi, mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, theologian of the 1200 Islamic Persia. Once I looked more fully into it the design makes sense.

    Hi Keith. You make some very good vids. I am retired fitter and turner from England but I now live in Thailand. I would like a bit of advice about building steam models. I now live in Thailand and plan to build a workshop and buy some machine tools. Is it possible to make a living out of building these models if you work 5 days a week to sell them on ebay? I will be buying my castings from Stuart models or some other place if they are a bit cheaper and of the same quality. Do you think this will work? Any advice would be helpful

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, a viewer said that U.S. 1/4 x 40TPI threads are at 60 degree pitch so they need easing with an English 1/4 x 40TPI tap . . . . which is what I am having to do.

    Dear Model Engineer
    Need help getting one going
    My father has one but cannot get it going It had two pipes going into the steam chest one at the top and one at the bottom, he reached it with valves, saying it doesn't make sense! get the man in Honiton who sold it to him said it was working but takes a lot of pressure. Anyone reflect on this and can help he can hardly see now and 90 stubborn, just like to get it going before he's no more.
    I understand that this model is meant to run on very low pressure. there is no feeling of resistance as you turn the wheel.No air coming out the outlet pipe.
    can you help or know where there is a building diagram on this?
    Yours faithfully
    Gary Bridger
