Features I like about this radio:
Nice large, easy to read LCD.
Great side lit screen.
AM Reception is fantastic.
FM Reception is good.

Long run time on two AAs, 100+ hours.
A narrow bandwidth filter for AM and FM.
Clear case.
Easy to tune.
Features that could be added or improved on:
An optional Clock feature.
Sleep function.
Improve FM Stereo reception.
Overall this radio will fit the needs of a select group of people. There are a ton of options out there. If you need and easy to read LCD digital radio and do not need a speaker then this one should be on your list. Remember it does boast long life on the two AA batteries since it does not have a clock to run it down. The extra narrow filter is a bonus too.

I have one of these. One of the best radios I have ever used, for FM Dxing. This little unit will pull in stations over 175 miles away, and I'm in a valley. I couldn't imagine what this thing will pull in being up on a hill or mountain top, but I'm sure it would be lots fun. For AM/MW, its about average for what you get, in such a small package. Very happy with mine!!!
Could you not do that with other radios ?
If the transmitter was very strong, other radios would have heard the same signal too.
This is one of the best radios I've ever had, that's a "SOLID" 5 star performer on FM. I've picked up stations over 160 miles away, and if I was not in a valley, over 200 miles would be very achievable. This radio has outstanding selectivity and sensitivity, and beats out all of my bigger radios for Dxing FM. I have two RF-2200's, a Sangean PR-D5, a Sangean PR-D4W, and a GE SR2, and this little bugger beats them all. All these radios have outstanding FM performance, but this little DT-160CT can hear radio stations further away. Being able to see all the cool circuits just adds to the appeal of this outstanding radio. The am side is average, but given the size of the ferrite antenna ( laws of physics ), it's not bad for Dxing am. A am loop antenna might help push it up to 4 stars. If you are looking for a pocket size radio ( headphones only ), this is the one to get!!!!

todderbert you should get the Tecsun 398BT that has Bluetooth
I recently bought a white DT-160 from Amazon Spain. It has a CLOCK . You can see it only when the radio is off. I can't upload a photo here. I listen only on FM and the reception is very good. I get the local and semi local AM stations also.

The "clear factor" makes this one irresistible. Just amazing to be able to see the insides. I love the jog wheel/push switch...very gadgety and cool. I'm putting this one on my want list.

I like clear radios because you can see the insides of the radio without taking it apart.
I heard some French on my Midland ER210 but it's not 860 AM it is 90.3 and 90.7 CJBC FM E-Skip
I enjoy your presentations,Todderbert. I wish you would tune 530 am on the radios you showcase more often because any radio that doesn't receive either Canada or Cuba on 530 from the eastern US isn't a worthy contender(IMO).
That's a prison radio. The reason why it's clear is that prisoners can't hide contraband in it.

Looks like a perfect EDC radio. I bet it fit will fine in my maxpedition Barnacle pouch along my other EDC stuff. However size wise the dt180 might be the better choice for EDC.
my lovely Proton 100 from 1980 died after nearly 40 years of around the globe travel. sadly they do not make them any longer. this may be a good replacement candidate? no DX switch? curious. the Proton had an all analog section and sounded very good.

Cool! I was a little shocked I heard anything there.
There seem to be two issues with this product.
1. There is white noise in this product. However, if you only feel it when the volume is set to 0 or very low, you won't feel it at all if you turn the volume up to some extent.
2. Although the duration is quite long, about 100 hours, the first compartment of the battery runs out sooner than expected. However, the middle compartment of the battery does not think that it will disappear even after several days of continuous use.
The sound quality of this product is quite good, and I think both FM and AM reception are excellent.

I was late to the party on the Xtraem model and can’t find it anywhere. This might be another option albeit in a different price bracket!
I own one of those Xtraems, your not missing much :) I know it was $4 a piece, but the hiss,,,oh the horrible hiss. btw the Sangean DT-120CL is updated. It takes two triple As now. I have one, but not sure if I will review it, it is identical to the Sangean DT-180.

I see all the radios you review and wonder what YOU would pack in a bugout bag. I am not a prepper, but it is still something to think about. Battery life vs reception... I'm not sure WHAT I would pack. The Tecsun PL-380 comes closest for me I guess.
The Skywave SSB. Amazing radio, and you could setup a solar bank charging system for it. Small and versatile radio. Your 380 is a good choice as well.
I have considered buying the non SSB Skywave... I have transceivers for SSB, so unless the SSB model is better all around, I don't feel I need it.
It reminds me of the transparent Gameboy. :p

The clear model wasn't available,I understand prison radios are clear,are they available to the public ,I think clear radios of any sorts would be fun to own .If you have any more info on clear radios I hope you will share or if any of your fans have any info on clear radios I hope they will share tools
When the cops tell you to empty your pockets, the fun really begins. Tell them it was a "souvenir" when you were on vacation!
Prison radios/tvs. Are clear for inspection. By guards, and security sweeps.

The larger units are, the smaller DT-120CL is not.
no DX switch? the Proton would use the headphone cable as a FM antenna, the speaker sucks on the 180
Sangean and Sony make clear radio for prisons, where they work very well.
I think I would like this radio but I am searching for a radio that has a mp3 player the concern is i want long battery life, a mp3 player and the biggest is fm radio reception, I want fm radio anywhere and ofcourse it has to be not expensive.
Prison radio
Prison radios don't have clocks. The prisons have set hours for everything.
Not a fan of prison radios. I like a solid color case. This thing is to busy looking. All the guts are distracting. It's a good performer, just ugly.
I think they are cool, reminds me of my original Clear Gameboy I had in the early 90s.
Putting AM antenna near the display causes noise.
This is a device for institutional use.
