      The static grass really does transform it! It only seems to have become popular in the last decade or so (or perhaps I'm just more aware of it nowadays) but it to my eye it certainly gives a lot more depth than traditional scatter materials. Thanks for watching 😃

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BillyBean 89 There’s no plans to have a turntable in the station area at the moment but as the layout is intended to be a heritage railway I’ll be able to get away with running engines tender first. I would like to include one in the future if I can though 😃

      Thanks James - yeah the whole thing is a learning process with this being my first serious layout but there's no sign of anything falling apart. Even if it did, as it's modular I could just replace or improve individual sections as and when.
      But as you say the main thing is that it looks great and runs well and I'm over the moon with the results I've got so far. Thanks for watching 😃

  • @speleokeir

    3:37 If using track pins rather than gluing, you may want to use a punch (a short length of metal) that you can pick up from most hardware/DIY stores. Unlike a hammer head the punch is small enough to fit between the tracks. Alternatively just use a small piece of off-cut wood, etc. The idea is you don't risk hammering the track, it's less awkward and it helps keep track pins flush.
    A decent electric saw really helps save a lot of work and time too. They're not cheap but are a good investment especially if building a number of baseboards.

    Another silly question/suggestion. Have you considered selling the endplates so you can create a TMRG standard for a massive modular railway at exhibitions?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, it is something I've considered and the question has been asked before, but the way I order them means it wouldn't be realistic unless I did it at a loss. Besides, modular layout groups have never really taken off in the UK from what I've seen and those that do usually adopt the much more popular Freemo standards so it's nice to dream but I can't see it happening anytime soon. Cheap, strong hairspray is a good substitute for layering spray.....

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I'd heard that too. I tried it once but unfortunately it didn't work as well so I went back to the Peco layering spray. I've heard spray varnish also works but it costs about the same as the Peco spray so there's not much benefit there. Thanks for watching 😃

      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Alex, really glad to hear you're enjoying it!
      I'll go into the wiring more in a future video but essentially the power is transferred by wires under the baseboards instead of through the track. You can see the beginnings of this at 02:53 and then I use push connectors to electrically join those wires to the corresponding ones on the next module along. Hope that makes sense and thanks for watching 😃

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks David, yeah that's fair enough. If you want to be able to run multiple trains a double track line would be perfect. I wanted to model a heritage railway though which is why most of the layout is single line. Thanks for watching 😃

  • @Sam-JS
    @Sam-JS 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How have you run power to the track? I'm assuming the dropper wires attach to a centre supply in some kind of modular fashion, but its something I think would be really helpful to see. Loving the work so far and can't wait to see the station!

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Sam, the droppers take their power from positive and negative wires that run under each module so you’re pretty much spot on. The wires have connectors on each end to transfer power to the next module but don’t worry, I’ll be going into all this in more detail in the next episode along with the station! Of course, they're called bullet dowels. I got mine from stationroadbaseboards.co.uk but I'm sure they'll be available from other places too. If you haven't already seen it I showed them off in more detail in Episode 3, so that may be worth checking out too.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks glad you enjoyed it! I'll be honest, it's unlikely since I don't weather my own engines so I don't feel I'd have the required expertise to do a tutorial on it.
      With the livestreams, never say never, but they seem to be working well as extra mid-week videos at the moment. I worry people might be disappointed though if all they got on a Sunday was a replay of the livestream from the night before... but we'll see. Thanks for watching 😃

      Indeed they could and in fact my own micro layout isn’t much bigger, if a little longer. While it isn’t the main focus of this layout in the future it would be fun to have a few little standalone micro layouts that could be all joined together using this system. Thanks for watching 😃

    Hi, im planning on starting a model railway as well! I'm a bit confused on the wiring, if I use rail connectors, do i need to wire every peice of track?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, nope the metal fishplates you use to join the sections of track together will pass the current along (unless you use special insulated fishplates). Some modellers do choose to wire up every piece of track though for added reliability.
      If you're just getting started might I recommend my series Model Railway Basics. There's actually a whole episode on wiring alone: th-cam.com/play/PLrxCs5t2FkmwrlGe3uA8naYkBug7g-u7N.html

      No it's a "Take Cover Terrain" one. I've only ever seen them available on eBay so I imagine it's someone making them from fly swatters but it works incredibly well and is much better than the old Hobby King one I used to have which was rubbish 😂

    Are those track pins normal hammer nails?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว
