dr. worm: - they call him dr. worm - interested in things - not a real doctor - a real worm - an actual worm - lives like a worm - likes to play the drums - thinks he's getting good - can handle criticism - someday someone else besides him will call him by his stage name
there's such a beauty in this song that sneaks up on you without warning. it starts as a worm showing you his love for drumming anf its a little bit cute, a little bit funny, but then the worm starts singing with such soul how one day the world will love his music and call him by his name. you realize that he's singing about being recognized, beinf able to be the person he wants to be. it makes you realize that he's more than just a worm with a hobby, and it makes you love him for it. fantastic songwriting
It doesn't have rhymes because it is deliberately told as though it were casual conversation, like someone telling someone else random imperfect stuff about himself.
I do love how the line "[...] I'm twirling the stick" indicates that due to the lack of limbs, he can only ever wield a single drumstick which I assume he just wraps his entire body around - true dedication.
Dr. Worm is doing ok. He has hobbies, he's interested in things, and he has friends who come over and jam and they enjoy making music together. This is a song about not having to be great at everything you nonetheless love.
its not just about someone who is lonely, longing to be recognized for the hobbies he has spent time getting talented at.. its about finding love and friendship, and standing out, at all in this lonely world and being appreciated as an individual. its not about being egotistically recognized for getting good and being worshiped as a rockstar.. its about the human connection and feeling valued at all. fuckin SLAPS
