    Hello, firstly, thanks a lot for you explanation, it’s really god and helpful, but in the final part, the dip direction is perpendicular to the direction of strike, therefore, in this map, the dip direction needs to be NW or SE , because the direction of strike is NE. If you wanna understand better, you can represent the Structural data in a cross(+), and you can see that it’s imposible to represent NE strike with an E dip because they are not perpendicular..

    i used the same map. but i dont know how to get the horizontal disance cause i used the cm ruler please help

      Hey! It's the same process seen in the video.
      Measure the scale in the upper right corner of the map with your ruler. Let's say "x" is the value you got after measuring. So x centimeters is equivalent to 500 meters in the field.
      Then measure with your ruler the distance between the 2 strike lines. Let's call that value "y"
      So apply some basic math:
      x cm ----- 500m
      y cm ----- distance between the strike (in the field)
      Distance between strike lines =
      (y × 500)/x

    Thanks a lot for sharing the map drawing skill! I know that a structural contour is a line that connects points with equal elevation. But what troubles me is that, for example, there are more than 2 non-colinear points for the contact between Rock 1 and Rock 2 at 700m height. So how can I know which two points should I connect? I can have 3 combinations!! I also know that I can use the Law of V to roughly identify the strike of the contact, but what if the law of V cannot apply. How can I solve the problem? Thanks a lot

      I think I need a bit of help understanding your question. For the 700 m contour, there's one point of contact between B and C, and one or two between C and D. Those are different units so the points of contact don't have to be colinear. Also, in nature (or on any geologic map), strike lines aren't perfectly parallel and you have to use your experience in the field looking at the rocks to best inform your decisions. This is because local or regional scale folds and faults can offset or bends the beds. For example, if you had an arrangement that required you to draw two parallel 700 m strike lines- you might have a fault or a fold.

      Sorry for that. What I mean is just a scenario. The scenario is that there are more than 2 non colinear point for the contact between two rock units at a specific height, let say 700m. So how I can know which two points should I connect to make the structural contour?

      @@tombear4597 I see! That means that that unit does not have a constant dip. Imagine a unit that is folded into a dome shape. The map pattern for an outcropping unit would be a circle, with an infinite number of non-colinear points. More typically, you just have subtle changes in dip or underlying structure that makes points non-colinear. If you are working from a geologic map, make your decision based on other structures mapped nearby OR on any available strike and dips nearby. Ex. If there's an anticline hinge marked on the map, then choose the contacts on only one side of the fold hinge.

      The strata on the right side of the map dip east and the strata on the left side of the map dip west. Try to imagine an anticline but where sections have been eroded to expose deeper layers.
