Turning back north | Greece | Episode 11

I wake up early to not get caught from my wild camp (and still almost do!). I’m driving so early that the first place to visit is not even open yet, and I have to wait nearby. Once it opens, I visit Mycenae, the place that gave the Mycenaean culture its name. This culture existed before Ancient Greece, so all the way in the Bronze Age! In the video you can see the Lion Gate, which is the only surviving monumental piece of Mycenaean sculpture.
Then it’s time for a lot of great roads through the mountaneous landscape! And some very flat landscapes as well. I find another top 3 wild camp and stay there for two nights. Again I don’t see other humans at all, only goats!
Not much has survived from the ancient Sparta, but I feel like I just have to visit there, it being such a famous city-state. The modern city of Spárti is to be my southernmost point in my whole journey! Guess where that was, exactly? The parking lot of Sparta’s Lidl! :D
I know that from now on I would always drive north and essentially “return”, instead of drive further away from home. But that’s part of travelling, isn’t it? Besides, the views don’t get any worse. I find a quiet beach park where I camp the night. I have never spent the night seaside like this, but I hope there will be many more such nights to come!
In the morning I get nervous about whether I get out of the soft sand where I have parked, but again my fears are unbased.
I also visit Olympia off-camera and then leave the peninsula. I start to have a bit of a time pressure so I only visit Perama Cave and just blast through the rest of the country, all the way to the border of Greece and Albania. One last amazing view of Greece, and it is goodbyes to this incredible land.
