Gotta say, if I ever publish my book, I want someone like you to review it. You have such an honest approach that deals directly with the things you liked and didn't like. So much of the BookTube space is filled with almost a toxic positivity where if you don't like something, you just don't talk about it. Or if you do, it wasn't bad at all, it just wasn't for you. As a read, but even more as a writer, I want to fucking know with specificity what you liked or didn't like and ideally why as well and you give reasons for your thoughts and feelings.

Thanks! It means a lot. I've noticed the same things. Most reviewers don't go into enough detail to really know if I'd like something or not. And yes, there is far too much positivity, which doesn't help anyone unless your tastes happen to align perfectly to the reviewers.
Well, if you ever write a book let me know 👍

I hate the term "booktube" for that exact reason, it's just a clique of youtubers sucking each other off

Great to hear! Check out my discord if you're interested. It's small but we discuss books and storytelling in general, and you can always ask for feedback in for your work

I really appreciate the honest review, too many booktube books are given such false praise, Daniel is in sooooo many of these reviews so it's hard to take them without bias. Great work 😄

Thank you! I guess being a small channel makes it easier to be honest haha

Honestly from what I've seen. Other booktubers reviewing Daniel's book, only those very close to him gave it a "ok" to "decent" review. Even they didn't rave about it. Didn't check Goodreads though where i imagine lots of fans praise his book.

I really appreciate you substantiating your claims with given examples. I wish that more booktubers would do this. It would make their videos so much more engaging, lol

thanks! I think that's where being a writer comes in helpful. Most booktubers are just readers who critique so I understand how they may not be able to articulate why something works or doesn't work. It was part of the reason I started doing book reviews, because I wasn't getting what I wanted out of the normal reviews.

I don’t know … I used to follow him until he started tweeting how he hated religious people. And it seems it’s pretty upfront on his books. The new book also seems to be about “religious zealots” so… not sure I’ll like his style

Reading his latest upon request now. Outside of any political views, it still has a lot of writing craft issues. It's too bad he still hasn't learned. He's too focused on world building and not enough on character and story.

Your POV argument is in contradiction to what you mentioned about POVs when reviewing the prequel book.

You said multiple POVs was a mark of bad writing since the author can't convey what they want with just the one POV. In this video, you completely contradict that argument. Which is it?@@JasonFuhrman

I think you missed what I was saying. I'm not saying having multple POVs in a novel is bad writing. I'm saying that when you switch to a random POV to convey something AND NEVER USE THEM AGAIN, is lazy writing. That's exactly what he did in Breach of Peace. He wanted to show the antagonist character experience something that the main characters didn't, so he switched to that POV. But POV isn't just shifting things when it's convenient. POV should have purpose, meaning you have a set amount of POVs in a novel because they are the people you want the reader to see the story through. That's why in most novels, you see a consistent set of POVs, not just switching randomly when it's convenient for the writer.
Now you could write a novel with a set of the most random POV shifts, but that would be a stylistic approach. Breach of Peace was not because it happened once. We didn't continue to get POV shifts to that character for the rest of the novel, meaning Greene was lazy. He didn't switch the POV in a meaningful way to illuminate the character and his experience of the world. He did it because he wanted to show something the main characters couldn't. THAT is bad writing.

If that's the case, then is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince's opening "bad writing" because JK Rowling showed the British Prime Minister's perspective for one specific chapter only in order to add a sense of humor and explain how the Muggle British government largely views the Ministry of Magic? @@JasonFuhrman

I'd have to read it, but yeah, I'd agree that's lazy writing.
