just to piggyback off of what Coney was saying at 15:10, I think the storyline building in Melee was the biggest advantage it had over other games for a long time. For YEARS, they had the storyline of the "5 gods" (Mango, Armada, Hbox, M2k, PPMD) and I think that storyline was great because even if you only played smash, or were just casually started watching tournaments, you could literally see those 5 players played the game differently and there was a clear skill gap from those 5 and everyone else. Then, after the 5 god storyline was going for a while, a new storyline was created. "Who can take down the 5 gods?". We had players like Leffen and Plup who everyone could see were slowly gaining ground, slowly inching their way up the ladder and getting closer and closer to the skill level of the 5 gods. It's like a story where someone keeps getting so close but keeps getting knocked down until they finally beat their rival and win. At that point everyone is happy they finally were able to accomplish that feat. The only time I think Melee was in a bad spot was in the later 2010s where some of the gods were leaving the scene. Thankfully slippi came out and some new life was breathed into the game, but it was definitely a low point in the game at that time.
12:55 Quiting on low teirs doesn't seem like the mark of the competitive player to me, I feel like more than anyone they have an insensitive not to get memed in bracket because they don't know the matchup. What coney says about melee in 4:06 is exactly what makes melee so beautiful...new tech skill, especially defensive mechanics are being discovered every day as the motivation to fully optimize the game continues to stay alive
@@kittykat1587 No problem, but "alot" just also isn't a word at all. Most people get really upset when I correct them on this so I'm glad you're being kind. 👍
There's so much in common between melee and Guilty Gear Accent core acpr. There was a rollback update and a resurgence back during COVID. All kinds of players got into the game, and while the top of the tier list barely change, we saw a few characters considered low/mid tier win stuff and shake things off. Both games are technical and both have brought back old heads and new ppl in their early 20ies. It's crazy that we all thought the scene would have died with COVID yet we are just back even stronger and healthier
they also both have no input buffer, which is why acr can never get solved to the degree xrd did. now if only they could remove kliff, justice, and zappa....
Haven't seen the video yet but smash in general feels like it's been all a backburner kind of community/event space since 2022, mid 2023 had a bit of that more prominent vibe but not sustained. I feel like it's all a result of the panda stuff and events dropping, not dead but definitely lulled
I love me a good fwd tilt Pokes are always funny to do against players that just wiggle the stick and mash buttons. Simon Belmont's fwd tilt is super fun to just throw out on players that constantly dash in.
I feel like this happens with a lot of traditional fighting games as well. Older players move on or just don't spend as much time on the game and now the players that have either been playing forever but not at that level or who are new but have the time and access to all of the information gathered over 20 years are able to see better results. I've noticed it in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, where character specialists have been able to do incredibly well with characters that aren't top 5 simply because they have everything optimized and figured out. It's so interesting to watch.
Yeah, i refer to MvC2 where Thrillah beat 2 of the 3 gods from that game's prime (Sanford Kelly & Yipes) in FT10s on the same day...playing a team with Iron Man & War Machine. Hell, another top IM player even figured out major new tech recently that takes Cable from "one of Iron Man's best assists" to "basically mandatory if you want to play Iron Man"
I think a big part of the "I don't want to play against low tiers" that's missing is that the *reason* low tiers are bad is because they can't approach. They don't have the tools to beat crouch cancel, they don't have anything safe they can throw out. So anyone who is good with a low tier is just waiting for you to run into their moves, and it's not fun to play against at all. Sure, I COULD spend 6 minutes slowly chipping away at you, or I could just not do that. Also there's Luigi. Fuck Luigi.
even if you hate most low tiers i really recommend playing against G&W, G&W's problems arent his approach or his punish or anything like that, his issues are that he gets hit like hell and dies instantly, it makes for a game that really plays like a high or top tier matchup even when one character is clearly better
i remember watching like 5 minutes of the smash doc in like 2014, not really liking it, and then playing smash on the wii u as ness suffice to say im a street fighter 6 player now

This is probably the year i’ve been less into melee since forever. Not enough relevant tourneys and the community being pathetic. Top 8 are always a treat to watch tho
The smash community being called rudderless honestly isn’t far enough it feels like we’re on hundreds of tiny boats all connected with only a few people being tos and top players with paddles and the only choice we have is which players we join and who we cut the rope with to make our ideal community. It was all good until the whole panda global vgbc fiasco it felt like we were reaching a golden age of smash but now (through circumstances that you can debate on yourself) we’ve been knocked back like 15 years. The major regions of smash (north America, Latin America, Europe and japan) used to feel more united melee and ultimate finally seemed to be united together there was respect and happiness and like money was starting to exist (and you know mods were being slipped in without Nintendo caring). Unfortunately I feel we learnt the wrong lessons from the end of the golden age now everybody seems to be in it for themselves all just trying to seem as safe as possible cause the blame game is all that’s going on right now in the community and it just shows we’re going in the wrong direction. Instead of all the commentators tos and top players uniting and planning on where to go (you’re kind of an exception to that coney) they all cut ties with people and try their hardest to win the insuring war that’s going on.
Mang0 will always be my GOAT because he still plays to win and gets pissy like a bitch when he loses. Armada was as dominant as anyone can ever get in Melee, but he doesn't have the longevity that Mang0 has. That dude started in his teens winning tournaments and hes's still winning majors when hes in his 30s with a wife and child. I also absolutely love seeing "weaker" characters win. I will cheer my head off for a DK win, I will always root for the Falcon win over any spacie, and don't even get me started on Axe and aMSa!
Smash always felt separated from the rest of the FGC, but now it feels like the FGC is the one surging ahead and Smash is the one floating off aimlessly. Or maybe some of us just migrated to the greater FGC and feel that disconnect now.
Street Fighter 6 & Tekken 8 got great reviews when they came out and have mostly done well to maintain their popularity. Tekken has embraced the model of marketing via famous content creators in NA, and SF6 has done the same in Japan (where it competes with Apex & Valorant in terms of stream numbers). Smash just doesn't have anything like that atm. There's also something to be said for Smash never finding its own Chipotle and relying on shady crypto startups for sponsorships, given how that bubble burst over the past year or two...
Mid/low tiers will win a close game on slippi, spam lol, then leave. It can be tilting but it’s also kinda funny. If you think about it, the joke to them is that they could ever win a game

So people play other character and don't rage. While a game like brawl would have really needzd the ultimate path treatment. Where agregious stuff Is patched (well. Sonic went through and dlc pass 2 was too late) and bad character get a few number buffs. Just so that the characters stay close enouth that most of the cast is viable to have fun with and expect to win locals against good players. You can also make it look back so hard. Where everyone is so fucking broken. That except some unavoidable shit. You really only need one move to win even with a low tier like on the fist of the north star game.
im like 90 percent sure that grsmash was interviewed with a facecam and everything by EE or someone years ago but it seems to have been wiped from youtube or its some mandela effect
8:37 I see some of these characters played on slippi but most aren't played because they're just too bad. Mr. Game & Watch is a decent character, Mewtwo is underrated because he's hard to learn how to play properly. Roy and Mario just have objectively better versions with Doc and Marth and Zelda is just why play her when you can play Shiek. Pichu is the same deal, Pichu hurts herself when performing electric moves and is one of the lightest characters so just play Pikachu. And then we get to the really bad characters, Ness is barely decent and is usually played by players that are really good at the game and want a challenge. Kirby is really weak, has terrible moves, grabs and recovery and Bowser is very slow and has a lot of lag when performing a majority of his moves but I would still say bowser is better than kirby. I've played bowser a lot on slippi and he's not as bad as people think he is, Bowser is still unbelievably trash but his moves hit super hard and a majority of his moves take stocks above 100%. Couple that with the fact not a lot of players know what bowser can do when played well and you can have a fun time just messing around. Just for anyone thats read this remember to try to play more defensively, you need to punish bad approaches as Bowser to do well and try to figure out which moves are fastish and which moves are too laggy and try to avoid using the very laggy moves.
I feel like HDR can low key overthrow Ultimate. but its not widely accessible thats whats preventing a surge. Melee will be played leverless frame1 smashboxes, in the future, the hardcore melee players dont want to pay 250$ for some goomy controller, GC controllers will soon be extinct then what we gonna play? I see some people use an XBOX controller that play pretty well in slippi, but it doesnt feel natural to me. Kind of how moving to 120-240hz monitors it took me a while to transition because nothing felt like an crt. I found some N64 controllers in my closet I wonder if theres a need for them.
12:18 I played against a Bowser named Mew2King on slippi like 2 years ago and always assumed it was the real guy, but now I'm questioning if it was someone else who just changed their name and down b ledge stalled with Bowser just to make it look legit...

There’s also Phobs
Personally I’m a fan of special moves
Smash is the pipeline to the FGC in current day from what I've seen.
comments HATE melee
Are you surprised on coney's channel? Lmao
Id say the closest thing his viewers like about melee is hbox poppin off
L. Melee is fuckin cool
@@Parpeing twitch chat likes melee so its jusr a funny contrast
How can anyone not like Melee, but then call Ultimate interesting? That's always confused me personally
@@HeftyDan probably people who think top level is just fox dittos?
12:18 I played against a Bowser named Mew2King on slippi like 2 years ago and always assumed it was the real guy, but now I'm questioning if it was someone else who just changed their name and down b ledge stalled with Bowser just to make it look legit...
Nice hat Coney
