Home Repair: Kitchen Tile Re-Grout

  • A video describing how I replaced the grout in my kitchen.
The house I'm living in was built in the 1950s. Some of the grout in the kitchen may have been this old. Some sections were chipped and missing, Some sections had been replaced with sanded grout and some sections were so soft that the grout came out with a tooth pick.
This video show's how I removed the old grout and replaced it with new non-sanded grout.

just bought a house built in 1969, I’m a first time homeowner and had no idea what was wrong with our kitchen grout. Now i realize it’s basically all gone! Thank you so much for this video!

Thank you very much for loading this tutorial. I just completed my bathroom tiles using your instructions! I looks outstanding!! Whew! Dang, it's alot of work! But I'm a 51 year old woman, so I can be worn out! I would tell anyone grouting that they'll be in a grumpy mood from all that!! ;)

Well my aunt is 88 and walks the entire flight of stairs up and down of the NY Supreme ct. building on Centre st (yes, the one in Law & Order, etc lol) every day to stay in shape, so we in our 50's can really start moving it! 😄 (well, barring physical restrictions, of course).

Oh, And I wasn't trying to downplay your achievement there as that is certainly a lot of manual labor and lots of muscle work!! I'm just trying to keep us all motivated! And physician heal thyself because I'm sitting here with my quarantine 15 that I need to start getting rid of! 😳🙄Anyway, just didn't want that to be taken the wrong way and great job girl!

Wow - wish I'd seen this before my first, second, third and fourth tile project!!!! Great tips for making it less odious - I didn't wait long enough and apparently used way more grout than necessary so had huge waste to clean up. I can't believe how far a small cup of that grout went. Going to tregrout my first tile project tomorrow with your tips. Thanks!

Thank you! Here's to caring for our old treasures rather than ripping then out for a cheap, awful "upgrade"! Looking forward to doing this project on our 1947 kitchen quite soon. (Our tile is similar to yours - black and white and the counter is rhombus-set rather than square, though the back-splash is square-set, like yours) Great demo. Thanks again!

I'm very excited to tackle the nasty grout in my kitchen. I am pretty sure we have the exact same kitchen, the tile looks exactly like mine (1949) and we even have that little metal rectangle with the old knob in our backsplash!

Great video! I just bought a house, and they reno'd the shower with tile - but didn't seal it (according to the home inspector) so all the grout needs to come out and get replaced (cause of the moisture damage). This video really helped me out! I'm going to get started this afternoon. - Rebecca

This worked great! Followed every step and used the same products and my bathroom floor looks like new again. Got the same grout online at Walmart for $6 and a rubber trowel on line at Walmart for $6 and both had free shipping since it was sold through a third party vendor. I used dryer sheets instead of cheesecloth and it worked great. Plan to do the second bathroom floor this weekend. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!

thank you so much! i was going to start this process and was a bit intimidated. with your step-by-step i am certain my countertop will look tons better--just like yours. who knows...i might just keep it as is for another bunch of years. the tile is in great shape and i like having something older and different than just about everyone else, but i don't like it looking nasty like the grout does now. this looks like it will do the job! so excited now....!!!! thanks, again. :)

Seems like all those 1940's and 1950's houses, at least here in southern California, came with either peach or pink kitchen and bathroom tile. Mine did. Built in 1943.

Yea that's all great and thanx for the video, but what I want to see (and what typically gets missed) is how to get the counter edges (vertical spots) and between outlets and behind the sink sections that the big flat tool cant get to. The big flat section is the easy part.

I'll grant you the tile is 1950's..But there is no way the stuff you removed with a windshield removal tool is grout..if it were 50 plus yrs old it would be so hard that you would slide across the tile surface and scratch the the ole tile..There would be dust and chips neither of which were seen, what you removed was a silicone based pre-mixed grout and not the old portland based cementous grout..Hydetools have a Regrout Tool that gets the job done on original old grout!

Thank you for sharing! My kitchen tiles are the same. Same colors of yellow and pink. Would there be chance of mold growing in the cracks where grout used to be? I'm always cleaning it every day but want to regrout. What would you recommend for all the cracks in between? 2cm wide at most.

It's a taste and preference thing... Personally, if the grout lines are wider than a 1/4 inch I use sanded. If they less than 1/4 inch wide I'll use unsanded.
