A chicken can only come out of a chicken egg, but a chicken egg, through mutation, can come out of a non-chicken. Even if you interpret the question as meaning whether chickens or eggs appeared first, eggs go back to fish, which predate birds by many, many millions of years. So the egg came first. QED. -- Mike

Well, the dinosaur didn't become a chicken that laid an egg, an ancestor of the chicken that probably had ancestry in the dinosaurs, and had many similarities with but could not yet be called a chicken laid an egg that contained the mutations that led to the birth of the first in the overarching genus of chickenkind.
