    I put a Road Sofa on my Electra Glide Standard about a month ago and instantly fell in love with it. No break in, but my suspension isn't stock, so the seat is not having to do all the work of cushioning the ride. The only drawback is I'm probably going to need a slightly taller windshield, but that's pretty minor and I'm looking at Madstad so I can fine tune it.
    Great company.

    I bought a 22 road glide and I am 6 ft 6 in. Needed extra room so I purchased the Saddlemen roadsofa. Gives 2 extra inches of reach which is awesome as all get out. After about 2500 miles the seat is still as stiff as the day I got it. Plus now here is the biggest issue I am having and causing my to completely hate this seat. After about 20 to 30 minutes rides the seats starts getting hot, and before you ask no it is not a heated or cooled seat. Didn't have this issue at first now all of a sudden I can't go very far and I have to stop and get off the bike for a few cause it is just too unbearable to ride. You ever had this issue or heard of it?

    • @BikesBeardsAndBrews
      @BikesBeardsAndBrews  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Honestly after about 600 miles I start getting sore but after 10 min off the bike I'm ready for another 200-220 miles, I do find myself shifting around at the 170 mark and at 900miles I just want to be off the bike but I haven't encountered a seat that proclaims 1000 mile comfort so here we are. As for the firmness, it will always be firm due to the gel though that's part of how it keeps you sinking into the seat pan like normal foam which I can appreciate. I haven't had the overheating issue and I've been in Georgia in the summer with mine. At the end of the day though I do get it, different seats for different people and there is no one perfect seat for everyone. I hope you find yours soon!

Currently running a lepera tailwhip, which is great for shorter trips and beating around town, but i want that back rest/support on the long 500+mile trips. Im 5’7 about 30” inseam will this seat put me higher up reducing my footing or is it about the same as say stock height?

    • @jam471975
      @jam471975 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason you mention is why I prefer backrest that use the slot that's in the factory seats. I bought my 18 roadglide brand-new and that was one of the first things I did as I got a Mustang backrest that mounts directly to the top of the rear fender under the seat. Five years later this backrest is still just as solid as it as a day I put it on.
      There is no reason why these aftermarket seat manufacturers can't make the same slot in their seat to accept these backrests that mount to the rear fender.
      When manufacturers use the seat as the mounting point for the backrest it is never going to be as solid as mounting the backrest directly to the bike.

    I have some pros and cons with Saddlemen. Spoiler alert: the pros outweigh the cons, but both are worth discussing.
    My 2003 Sportster came with a Saddlemen Explorer. It's kind of an ugly seat, and the passenger section looks a bit silly without a sissybar, particularly if just riding solo all the time. The Corbin Wall would be ideal as far as looks, but all reports are that those are nowhere near as comfortable as the Saddlemen Step Up, which in turn is less comfortable than the Explorer. So there's that.
    Build quality gripes include 2 frustrating things. First is that if the seat ever gets caught in the rain, it could take MONTHS to get the moisture drained out. I always have to remove it from the bike and store it nose down to make sure moisture drains out, and doesn't get sucked in from the air in general. If I don't do this, I wind up with wet spots on my thighs after a ride, which is annoying.
    Related to that is my other build quality gripe, which is the little rubber bumpers that act as a support and vibration damper between the frame and seat pan. Since I have to remove the seat after every ride, one of the bumpers broke off. I tried to get just a replacement bumper from Saddlemen, but because it's a rivet of sorts, they stated that I would have to send it to them to get it replaced. Since I was not the original purchaser of the seat (again, it came with my bike), I would have to pay up front for the service, which was something like $250, PLUS shipping. I gave up on that, and just bought some similar sized bumpers with sticky tape from Amazon for about $8 and placed them over the holes, which seems to work OK.
    That's a lot of negativity. Why do I still love the seat? Well, it's comfortable for longer rides, and the lower back support is actually quite good. I tried switching to a Mustang Wide Touring Solo Seat (without integrated back rest). While it's a sturdy seat, and more comfortable to sit on when stopped, it felt like I was going to slip off of the back under even modest acceleration... on an 883! I bought an old pillion pad for cheap, and a second hand Saddlemen Tunnel Bag to act like a back rest as well as storage, which KIND of worked, but the bag didn't really stay put that well, and the Mustang seat transmits more vibration up into my tailbone than the Saddlemen Explorer, so I fee like I have to pee after 40 minutes of riding with that seat (my 2003 is the last of the rigid mount Sportsters, so there's a LOT of vibration). While the passenger section of the Explorer is too wide for the Tunnel Bag, which is unfortunate since that bag is super convenient given that I don't have saddlebags, the Explorer is just a vastly more comfortable seat for riding in general.
    So yeah, I definitely agree that Saddlemen products are good. Saddlemen support is more frustrating. Then again, that could be said for just about any company's customer support. *shrug*
    I may still put my sissybar back on, but I always found it ugly, and disliked how it made my Sporty even more top-heavy than it already is, but it would allow use of a larger bag, or even my Tunnel Bag in a weird mounting position. It's a damn shame that Kuryakyn back rest isn't made for older Sportsters, or I would have gotten one of those ages ago.

    • @BikesBeardsAndBrews
      @BikesBeardsAndBrews  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would take a look at how old your seat is and if it's using leather or marine grade vinyl. With the road sofa I just replaced it was all marine grade and my bike literally sat out all night in a literal torrential downpour, then I rode it in a tropical storm until I couldn't any longer and grabbed a hotel, the next morning my seat was perfectly fine, no rain retention, no soaked butt, no draining nothing. If you go watch my playlist, Big Dumb Roadtrip it's from the Friday the 13th camp forward that this all happened. I can't speak for previous models or if they're wrapped in leather but the 5 I've had have not run into that at all. None the less, glad the good outweighs the bad and you've got one under your butt!

    • @packgrog
      @packgrog ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BikesBeardsAndBrews definitely the marine grade vinyl. The water gets in from the seams around the edges. It's probably an older version of the Explorer, or maybe that's just an issue with the Explorer model. It's great otherwise. I definitely wish there were a seat with the more comfortable rider seat profile of the Explorer with the fastback back section of the Step Up. Ah well.

    I just installed the exact same seat and am enjoying it with the exception of how hot it gets when sitting out in the sun. The gel core retains heat for a very long time, and combined with absorbing engine heat even further, it's quite uncomfortable and way more unpleasant than my HD stock seat. It literally feels like my meat and 2 veg is getting charbroiled as I ride. If the bike has been covered or in the shade, or at night, its quite comfortable.
