Fun fact: the skyscraper that the code shimmers down is Salesforce tower. Salesforce is a company that built its success off of collecting, managing, storing, and analyzing data - specifically data about potential customers. Yet another way to reinforce the metaphor of the simulation being tied to big tech.

I think it’s interesting to note that IO is also a common technical abbreviation of Input/Output. Mirroring this place as a location to both receive and return people to/from The Matrix.
Or how computers use to have power switches with a line and O representing power on and off...there are several ways to interpret.
It’s also a 1 and a 0.
IO is also mirorred 01 - first city of machines on Earth (Animatrix)

best réponse to the film . it is an open minded perspective, you point out everything that tried to make the film move forward while everyone else stay negative and focused on the past trilogy
I liked how at the beginning The Analyst say Tom hates his cat but it ends with Neo holding it. This was another thing The Analyst was gaslighting Neo about. Especially, since The Analyst keeps the cat close every time he uses his special powers like slowing time or erasing the gunfight. So Deja-Vu seems to be somehow connected to this ability to reset the Matrix and change its physics rules. Neo being the one holding it in that last confrontation underlines that he and Trinity are in the control now.

I feel like there's alot more than meta commentary going on here. So many of us going through transformations and remembering who we are or, in my case what I am. From the drug epidemic to the pandemic... There's a really neat overarching positive message to be heard here. I can't wait to watch it again.

It's interesting that neos powers outside of the matrix didn't start until Smith was out of the matrix in a real body.
First time I saw Neo having powers outside the matrix, I thought that they had revealed that the real world was a simulation inside a simulation...
One thing: I thought “IO” may have been reference to the first machine city that was discussed in the Animatrix: 01. If you look at it in binary, b10 = 2 decimal.
I/O is input/output in the world of computers. It's the limiting factor for processing data in a system.

It’s also the opposite of 01 the machine city’s name from animatrix.
I thought it was again going back to binary as in 1 + 0 so a place where the 2 states/enterties, both humans and machinen live together. But it does work as I/O for input output, or rather inside outside, for those come from inside the matrix, being the programs we see who take on form in IO like Morpheus does, and those come from outside being the humans.
A nice little touch: when Morpheus gives Neo the speech in the all-white room with the vintage TV, while the camera stays on Neo at the beginning, it slowly change the color grading from the current movie one to the more grainier-darker-saturated one of the original one (or better: like the grading used in the original scenes/flashbacks in this film).
Very subtle but I found it sooooo cool.
Nice catch. Yeah I thought they really did a good job. People don't understand or appreciate how much detail and thought went into this movie.
The film seems to splitting fans but I personally liked it, it’s a good set up and basically resets the whole franchise back to the end of the original where the Matrix exists and Neo and others are aware of it so they can go from this point onward without all the baggage about the architect and other elements some people had issues with in the original sequels… 8/10
I found it interesting that despite all of the fighting and talks of the machine, at its core, this is a love story. I also believe it to be an allegory for the creation story as well

yeah, Jonathan Groff as Agent Smith just ain't it for me. even to the point that it looks like he tried a little bit too hard to imitate Hugo Weaving.

"IO" was a call back to the first movie when they said the were going to interrupt his Input/Output carrier signal. IO also represents the binary 1 & 0.

It has a couple layers, like the other person said, it’s what’s left of Zion when u take away the beginning(z) and the end(n)
And power switches
Partially right about a modal. A modal window creates a mode that disables the main canvas/window but keeps it visible. Technically, it forces the user to make a decision before they can interact with the main window.
It also depends on how the modal was configured. Users arent always forced to answer, they can click outside the modal to dismiss it if it allows.
Love it. The illusion of choice.

Also, modal code is code that puts ALL other processes on hold while it executes, it's typically used where threaded processes are all returning values to be combined or evaluated together, so that none of the other threads can proceed until the data they've produced is resolved. Here it looks like each 'modal' is a decision point, where multiple simulation runs are brought together and resolved.
I'm pretty sure that the bikes that “Tiffany” was building were actually Arch Motorcycles....a custom brand that Kanu is involved in IRL
Yup and his partner is the mechanic in the movie working in the bikes.
I like how insidious Neil Patrick Harris portrays The Analyst, mainly because of how accurate and apathetic he is - very much like software designed by someone with ulterior motives.

He just seemed like typical NPH to me. Not that he’s not a great actor. Just didn’t do it for me in this movie and for this character.

His performance surprisingly worked for me but the movie still was terrible tbh. I liked they started it as a meta commentary but then started following the same tropes they were critiquing.
*For those who love Sense8 was fascinating to watch most of the actors in this movie, they're deserve to have a comeback, they are great*

I like at the very end when they fly off screen. If you look closely they are rotating around each other. Kinda like binary stars.

I like those ideas, they just don’t fit in with what the movie is trying to suggest. To me it’s like the very last “binary” callout. Considering that it’s plastered all over the movie. You could go as far as saying the ref and blue pill have binary aspects as well considering that one doesn’t work without the other. That’s just my far fetched crazy idea though.

I wanted to see what happened with the humans of IO and the turncoat machines and all that
I'm so glad to hear someone discuss this film with such enthusiasm! Personally, I loved it, exactly for all the details described in this video, and for Love, which was just as essential for the first film, as it is for this one.

I saw Jude as a reference to Judas, the disciple that betrayed Jesus, considering a lot of people interpret Neo as a sort of Christ like figure.
Also, I was surprised there was no mention of the moment where Bugs actually says "What's up, doc?" :P

One detail I loved was when Neo was being treated after being brought into the real world, Bugs says "What's up, Doc?"

I liked this movie. I did my best to understand the plot & where the timeline was as well as how smith fit in & needed to be there. They definitely should’ve put in more backstory of Zion & what happened to everyone else during the peace & purge! The machines war & the analyst rise to despicable power
may likely be covered in the rumored Animatrix 2.0/Animatrix O supposedly in development
The Analyst throws away his blue glasses during the first bullet-time because Neo now knows the 'reality'. Also, the buttons of the blue sweater are now open and the blue butterfly is gone too.
One very small detail that I noticed while watching. Outside of the Simulatte front door was a shop called Zoetrope, the looping animation device. More loops
I really liked this movie and it puts the whole story of the Matrix in much more honest and darker light.
There is no escape from the matrix (capitalism)
Our only hope is to come together and hope to at minimum, change things to be a lil better for those trapped in it.
It's more so a conversation about all systems humans say they don't like or agree with but still abide by.
This movie just reminded me how much of an ingenious and groundbreaking film the original Matrix was.
Definitely my least favorite Matrix installment but I didn't think it was bad by any means. Loved how self-aware/meta it was; it fit the movie very well. Excited to see if there will be a follow-up fifth film.

This might be a stretch, but it appears that Neo and Trinity each have a blue and red glow on them at the 24:03 mark, possibly illustrating an "opposite attraction" or further showing the different paths with taking the red or blue pill. In this case, "maybe" the colors represents the machines attempts to keep them apart on separate simulations and/or realities, so the two wont eventually meet in the Matrix.
Excellent analysis, as always NR! One thing that still escapes me: how was Smith able to break out of the bullet time slo-mo when Neo and Trinity met in Simulatte for "the test" with the Analyst? I'm sure I must've missed that somewhere...

I think it's due to Smith being in the matrix originally so he would then know how fast it can really go. He was slower in the original trilogy because it was a older slower simulation

It’s pretty cool that Lana brought so many actors from the Sense8 cast into the Matrix world.
This was my favorite part. Seeing all of them
I was high when I saw this at the theater and I thought I was trippin when Moss's reflection was different
I loved this film. I nearly cried with glee every time a Sense8 cast member came on screen. I love Lana so much.

Simply put: Everytime I see an analysis regarding the themes and topics of this movie, I grow from liking to loving it. Probably because one gets a better idea how to understand it by accumulating all of this into your own first impression and thoughts.

The matrix the masterpiece lives on forever
Deus Ex in 99 had a Game of the Year edition, a game that the protagonist loosely resembeled neo, and had another character called Morpheus
Deus Ex came out the year after the Matrix was released, and altered its art style during development to match the aesthetic of The Matrix.
2 more references. The Pilot's name Hanno is a reference to Hanno the Navigator, an early Carthaginian explorer of the West African Coast. The birds in the Matrix also have a flight pattern that is extremely reminiscent of the Boids simulation used in computer graphics.
I loved the movie - was only disappointed with the lackluster visuals and fight scenes. But that’s only because when I think of the matrix, next level visuals and fight choreography comes to mind.

Coolest aspect of Bugs is what an old and classic symbol (slave) of WB Bugs Bunny is.
About the flock thing. It is foreshadowing the world is just a simulation. You know in video games, the animal AIs tend to repeat the same patterns.
Seq is also short for "sequence" in coding, which works for his character since he is the one that codes the portals for people to transport through the Matrix.
You should of put in how the butterfly in the theripist room changed to more red than blue in one of the futer meatings.
Seq in programming is short for Sequence, as in a function that allows multiple functions to run one after another super quickly as if at the same time like how he functions as an operator while projects into the Matrix

Awesome analysis! Really gives this movie a deeper meaning than what I initially thought.
One thing I thought I picked up on but wasn't mentioned here, was that previously the idea of salvation was freeing everyone from the Matrix, as if all humans wanted to be freed. This movie seemed to suggest at the end that Neo and Trinity will now give humans the choice to stay in the matrix or unplug from it, thus truly creating a co-existence with the machines. True freedom. The Humans who want to stay plugged into their altered reality can stay ("ignorance is bliss") and those who want to see behind the curtain and live in the real world, but without all the frills and comforts of the Matrix can do so. Inevitably they'll be some humans who stay, and thus the machines can continue to use them as batteries. Co-existence (as deranged as that all seems).
Good point. To dovetail on, if you recall Smith said it failed the first time the machines did it because it was "perfect". That speaks to how we "need" and lust for conflict in order to feel fulfilled. We constantly have to rank things (Jordan v. Kobe v. LeBron), have winners and losers (any sports), and victim/savior complex (disaster of some sort v. 'praised heroes'). So if none of those conflicts existed, so many people would have no 'purpose'.
That was actually what the Oracle and the Architect agreed to at the end of Revolutions, but then that caused a power shortage which caused the machine civil war, which led to this version of the Matrix.
I been a Matrix fan/analyzer since 1999....ima keep it short n say this was perfectly done n im grateful the Wachowskis ddnt let WB screw up their awesome legacy❤💯
The avatar of Neo that bugs saw it's the same everyone else, but, when Bugs saw he was younger and bald, just like he was when he came out of the matrix, so when he changes hir hair or beard, his avatar changes it too.

I feel like there's something we're still missing even lana says no one has figured it out yet. I think. Neo and trinity are the 1s in 101 and Smith is the 0. I feel like there's something there
To me it really boils down to how our life is so interconnected with algorithms nowadays and how easily we’re managed and controlled by it and if we’re not “plugged” in then we feel depressed just as Neo does despite being the famous developer of the best game ever. I absolutely loved the movie but although with all the emphasis on making “Trinity” as part of being the equivalent of being the one was a bit of a stretch, I understand Neo programming being passed onto or mixed due to previous movies but still i felt Neo should’ve been the one being the beholder of power of the one. Hugo Weaving and Laurence Fishburne not being involved took the wow factor out a bit plus not having big fight scenes and chases scenes but overall movie reflected more toward how our society is nowadays. I hope they make 2 more Matrix movies for sure.

*Missed Detail* Trinity catching Neo after leaping off the building was a practical stunt with wires. Just like the practical stunt of Neo catching Morpheus and the two hanging from the helicopter in the first Matrix. So it's an homage to that scene in storytelling and ,breaking the fourth wall, in filmmaking.
It was a good movie. I heard not so great reviews but I kept thinking what are people expecting? It was exactly what I thought it would be. It's full of call backs, easter eggs, self-analysis, and reimaginations. I was guessing at the plot constantly and while it was a bit predictable as the story unravelled, I still found it exciting.
Really nice done anaylsis! The movie didn't really hook me like the other films did, but you really broke this one down in ways I can appreciate it more.

The file that was missing from the Modal was Morpheus. Normally you put an asset in the same folder as the level file. The name of the level is Heart O The City
*The city IO is also a nod to the animatrix where we learn the first all machine city was called 01*

I liked the Judas reference. Jude, Thomas Anderson's friend, might've been a reference to Judas; one of the original apostles of Jesus Christ that ended up betraying Jesus which lead to his execution.
One important detail about the modal is missed. Why does Neo see himself walking down the street in the modal?
it is just a visual representation that Neo investigates his modal because there is an alert notification pop ups that morpheus-smith program has breach

I really enjoyed the movie; I know lots of people didn't enjoy it, but I sure did. Seen it a couple of times now to try to understand it more but this video really helped.
Wonderful list, Erik! Though still not complete as there are basically easter eggs, callbacks, and references in each scene.
IO = 10 (binary), Input/Output, and more, plus my additional thought is that it's even similar to Ю from Cyrillic which is pronounced /ju/ like "you", which can be interpreted as the city kinda representing a safe haven for us, an escape from this surrounding digital madness :)

You only have to see it once though.
You can appreciate what it is right now. Look for a video entitled Milton Killer's Matrix Easter Eggs and follow that to its channel.
There is a lot of hidden clues in this 4th Matrix which makes us to hope for Matrix 5. But it all depends upon our beloved parent company Warner Brothers. And I wish for a full facts Matrix 5 rather than a full clues. So it will be good to make a schedule suitable for the Warner Brothers and for the Wachowski.
I personally loved the movie. I think it is one of the greatest sequels made. So looking forward to more movies.
