Brother, amazing story.. The ilizarov fixator ( halo ) is an amazing medical device that saves so many limbs but the pain is no joke...Wore one on my right leg knee to ankle for 8 1/2 months...during my rehab at Walter Reed a female soldier had one also but opted to have her leg cut off cause she couldn't handle the pain. I understood her choice and sympathized but I was also somewhat angry with her choice at the same time being we had so many amputees that didn't have a choice... Glad you rucked up and drove on. Proud of you and all our wounded who persevered. A little jealous of ya lol...I rehabbed at Bragg for 3 years after leaving Walter Reed...My Legs heeled great but it was other wounds that prvented me from being able to stay in the fight...I could have stayed in as an instructor or any non deployable job....I couldnt do it.. I got med retired in 08...So proud of you and 2 friends who fought through disabling injuries, overcame and then when back to the war. Bless you

Having this great podcast which gives individual combat veterans an opportunity to talk, tell their stories and give the uninitiated as well as other veterans a coal face look at their experiences. Could you imagine if after the Second World War, First World War and even the Civil War there was a podcast whereby people could get this amazing oral history. I do of course recognise that there are great oral histories and narrative histories (Stephen Ambrose one of the finest WW2 historians & Ken Burns’ Civil War) of people from those wars, however it’s the immediacy and the focus of the individual story that makes this podcast special. Just think that in two hundred years this interview will be available for students and citizens to watch and learn. Fantastic. This is a post service service. Well done.

All I can say after listening to both episodes twice!!!! Is holy shit WOW!!!! WHAT A TRUE AMERICAN SOLDIER AND AMAZING HUMAN. Definitely going to find his book. I can definitely relate to living in a tent for a year and a half with my dad at the lakes in Colorado while he saved to build a a little 900sq ft home for us.

I truly enjoy your series. I am not a Veteran but was married to 2 Vietnam Combat vets. Prior to either marriage I was in college demonstrating against the war, 1968-69. My first husband did 2 tours as a Door Gunner/Crew Chief flying SF’s into Cambodia and Laos. My second was an MP in Saigon but hated the duty so he volunteered to be attached to the Navy on PBR’s running combat ops on the Mekong Delta. Both made it home over 50 yrs ago and to this day refuse to talk about it and never admit to their service. I am still angry at the Government and Military for how the veterans were treated😡
Tyler Morgan on shawn ryans podcast talks about picking up Ryan and moving him to a different spot so the air craft could medivac him out of there. It's a unique thing to hear what his experience was saving Ryan's life.

We can get another great Combat Story interview and then see YOUR story on the reciprocal podcast. Bottom line, more Combat Story. Also, would love for someone to be brave enough to interview Richard Marcinko. Understand why the SEAL community podcasters are note likely to have him as a guest. But the stories he has are historic and someone needs to draw the line between the myth, the legend and reality. You’re just the guy to do it. Awesome show!

FST at Tarin Kowt was amazing group. Calvin Harrison was SF guy who was lost while I was there. Might be Ryan’s friend. Same engagement CAC Mark Forester was lost trying to save Calvin Harrison. September,2010.
@@TipoftheSpearLandmineRemoval Sept 2020 was rough on SOTF-SE. 2 controllers, 3SEALs, electronic warfare officer attached to squids, and SF Harrison all lost in a couple weeks. Petraeus & all top brass showed up for SEALs memorial.
I hope he plays football again! What you went through is as tough mentally and physically as anything. That being said it could always be worse and how we respond to these challenges shapes who we are! 🇺🇸

Long comment alert but I need him to know that something he said just pulled me out of the hell I've been in for 3 yrs. My sister was murdered by a serial killer when I was 12, I found her body, so they found him he's in jail. But this has impacted a lot of my mindset but he just said that we tell people what happens to us expecting they will understand but they cant really unless they've been in its. Its hard struggling with chronic pain health issues, I also have an e.coli strain so get infections so easily. Right now im homeless & was on the edge until he said that about expecting people to understand. Im grateful 99% of people don't understand the misery of what these horrific situations are about & the feelings that go along with them! But sometimes its takes random videos on others struggles to snap them out of going down that dangerous path i was on. So I hope your understand the gravity of what just happened bcuz it just saved my life honestly. Not trying to like promote being in TV or shows but my sisters story is on the ID channel, On the case with paula zahn, episode called "deadly predator". Only reason I told that part is bcuz I'm a real person whos not just trying to get symphony, but a real person who lived thru and actual nightmare & just letting u/him know how much he just helped this very real broken person. So thank u for your service, & thank u for making me snap out of the hell I.was just in!!!

Thank God for adrenaline. I remember laying for 20min after breaking my femur, falling asleep from the pain but Id still crack jokes to make sure my buddies knew I was fine. definitely not a "tough guy" at all but adrenaline makes sure I can be one if it keeps me or my friends alive.

No, not dumb at all. All Steelers fans know who Rocky Bleier is. An NFL draftee drafted to Vietnam who had a grenade tear up his foot. Surgeries and lots of heart and he's a 4 time Super Bowl winning running back.
