  • In this video, I present a version of the classic THOG problem posed by Peter Wason in his paper (w/ Philip Brooks): "THOG: The Anatomy of a Problem".
Answer to the THOG Problem: • Video

Here is the rough script for the video:
In this video, I want to introduce the THOG problem. Let's start by introducing the problem. First, here are four shapes. A blue circle, a red circle, blue square, and a red square. Second, I have written down on a piece of paper, the name of exactly one of the colors (blue or red) and the name of exactly one of the shapes (circle or square). Now I want to define what it means for something to be a THOG. It is defined by this rule:
"If and only if any of the designs include either the color I have written down or the shape I have written down, but not both, then it is called a THOG."
Looking at my paper, I see that the blue circle is a THOG. So, now that you know what it means to be a THOG and you know that the blue circle is a THOG. Each of the remaining three designs falls into one of these three categories:
    (1) is definitely a THOG,
    (2) is definitely not a THOG, or
    (3) there is insufficient information to decide.
Here is a question for you then, in what category do each of the remaining three designs fall into? In another video, I will tell you what the answer is to this problem and why the problem is somewhat interesting. But, at least for now, try to see if you can solve it yourself. If you can solve it, ask others to solve it and see if they are as smart as you are.
