As a track day junkee with a NB MX-5, I loved this review. The only thing I’d add, if keeping relatively stock, the NC is quicker and just as reliable.

Not even a mention for the AU falcon! I took mine to a 26 deep field track day and was 4th fastest and did 2nd most amount of laps 🤙
Although I do know aussie cars aint really avalible world wide. Especially at under 15k.

And I bet you got a good amount of change out of $15k, too! I don't know whether it still exists or not but there used to be a class for "old" Falcons and "old" Commodores as an entry level racing class. It was sort of a replacement of the HQ's which were sort of a replacement for appendix J.
I'm pretty sure that there were budget limits on the vehicles and verifiable receipts were part of the vetting process.

Whenever your on Australia's best driving roads it's always the guy in the AU driving fast, never see any fancy cars on these roads. They simply park them in the cities outside a Cafe.

Hmm, without having done much research on this, my top 3 picks would be a Type R if possible, the awesomely fun 6-speed Suzuki Swift Sport manual, or a Skoda Octavia RS

An interesting popular choice in UK for a track day these days is the 2001-2005 MG ZS 180. They use a 4 and 5 door version of a Civic body shell which has a 2.5 Litre Quad cam V6 mated to a 5-speed gearbox. They were rated very highly in the day as one of the finest handling FWD cars in the UK believe it or not and can be picked up for peanuts over there for track day use. These cars were sold in Australia from 2004 in small numbers using a face lifted version with a more aggressive body-kit. I have one and it is simply a stunning car to drive - the quad cam V6 sounds awesome. I've only seen one other here and wonder how many were brought in by MG Rover Australia? Great review by the way.

Before you buy your " track weapon " go to a track day. See what people are doing, to get the most fun out of the day. Most production cars will struggle to do 5 laps. Before things start to go wrong. Did a track day at Sandown. Professionally run day with them, recommended 1 warm up lap, 3 running laps and 1 cool down lap.

For the absolutely dirt cheap option - go for Bspec cars. Fit/Jazz Sport, Mazda2 Genki, Fiesta etc.
Not fast but handle well - cheap on fuel and consumables and reliable. Also more disposable if you do crash it or blow it up.
Will likely take the place of cars like the Civic and MX5 when all of them are too expensive or dead.

I’m just gonna throw it out there, the B5, B6 and B7 are WRX alternatives if you want an AWD model. They are relatively similar in size, albeit the Audi is heavier. But the older generations still were a riot with the 1.8T/2.0T. The aftermarket support rivals just about any other car on the market. Plus, the engine itself is pretty solid. The PCV system is your real enemy, but I’d rather have that, than head gasket concerns.

I know it was imported, but the EP3 Type R over the FN2 might be a better pick. There were significant numbers imported and I can't help but think there might be more of them on the road than the official Honda Australia offering of the FN2. I'd also toss the ED Civic into the mix, along with the CRX.

$15k in Australia gets you an awesome VW Mk5 GTI, which is hands down faster than anything on this list, and has amazing tunability. Yes it’s only FWD, but that also makes it lighter with a better power to weight than a Golf R. You may even be lucky enough to find a higher mileage GTI Pirelli edition (with the KO4 turbo as standard) for under $15k. I know Redriven have mentioned the Golf elsewhere, but jeez leaving it out of this list was a crime.

The best car for me... any car I can get. (without having my own money, I don't have a chance of getting one) What track did I master, the Tail of the Dragon! I was born to drive fast and go racing.... but then fate changed its mind and gave me 3 soft places in my spine where doing just about anything causes my spine to crush my nerves alone my spinal cord. So at the young age of 21, I had to give up my dreams, my hopes, my job, my apartment, my wife and my 1969 GT6 Triumph project car. All my money went to doctors that could do anything but tell me how bad I am... I'm 41 now, I was told I'd be in a wheelchair by age 35, I made it to 37. I got by driving as a speed courier, learning how to drive a cargo van faster then a sports car across East-TN. I live with a dirt race track a stones throw from my house and never came close to getting to race on it. Then after getting rear ended 3 years ago, it hurts to hit bumps in the road so I only drive when I have no choice. Before the crash 3 years ago, I was driving a MINT 2011 CVPI 300 to 400 miles per day, 4 days a week and have been doing that for over 6 years. I glad that other people can do the things I can't, I'm just losing my mind from pain and suffering from not being able to do the only thing I loved more then life itself. I was "Super Driver" and still have super fast reflexes, but they don't do me any good. (I did miss a woman that jumped out into the road while I was coming back from walmart last night, she was fighting with someone on her phone and just ran out into the road and I had to dodge her faster then she could have blinked, so I guess my skills saved her because anyone else wouldn't have even seen her let alone been skilled enough to go around her without hitting the brake, oh and I was doing the speed limit of 45mph so its not like I was speeding, I just pay very close attention to the road as I have seen it happen before... but these people at night in all black jumping out were trying to cause a crash so they can rob the victims) Oh, got off topic, sorry..... I never got a chance to even work for the chance to become a racing driver, just a over skilled delivery driver. Would be nice if I at least had the same chance as anyone else.

Looking forward to your Swift Sport redriven. Have contemplated them on and off for at least the last year as they are such a hoot to drive legally. Just can’t bring myself to having just a lowly 1st gen SS. Gotta get out of that midset I reckon! Also glad you came around on the MX5. Nobody understands them until they actually drive one! Just think they’re a cutesy slow hair dresser car. Which couldn’t be further from the truth. Anyone who has never driven one and cares about cars, owes it to themselves to drive one.

I had a 2006 civic sport sedan manual and while it had probably the best steering I've felt on a car it had it's issues. Firstly it's slow, actually slower than a Honda Jazz as the sport model has leather seats so is heavier and the K20Z engine only makes 114kw. But the main problem and the reason I sold mine within a year was the horrible rev hang that the manual has. It's much worse than the fn2r civic of the same year and just makes spirited driving not enjoyable. Also at the time in 2014 there was no tuning options for the car except for buying a usdm CSX ECU and getting Hondata flash pro from the US and only one person had done that. You're better off getting an accord euro as you get more power to weight stock with the k24 and you can tune them.

I disagree with the honorable mention of the Suzuki swift sport. For well under this budget it is possible to get a first new gen supercharged mini cooper S. I know there are a lot of horror stories around reliability but these are around the automatics and the turbo charged 2nd gen. The first gen will blow the swift sport off the tracks and they are a comparable reliability. If you was going for after spending a few bucks also with a stage 1 tune and remap the kia venga supermini can compete with a EK9 civic. Before you say Korean crap there is a reason Kia is the only company to give a 7 year parts and labour warenty in the UK not only that if you buy one used under 7 years old from Kia you can renew the warenty for a fee anytime up to 7 years. Which means some Kia have close to 14 years of parts and labour warenty from new.

N14 and N15 Pulsar with SR20. Almost as light as a civic without the pricetag, lots of modification options out of the states (same chassis as a sentra)
Volvo 850R/850 T5, turbo five cylinder, rear wheel drive sedan (or wagon, but unlikey under 15k) lots of potential for fun here.
Mitsubishi Airtrek Turbo R. Evo wearing an suv. Enough said.
Toyota Blade Master G (no really, thats what its called).. 3.5 litre v6 stuffed into a corolla. *Giggles in conformity*.
..and well, how can i not put it in..
nm35 Nissan Stagea. Awd, turbo v6 wagon. The ugly duckling that is more refined and faster out of the factory than any previous model, including the Autech 260. Cheap as chips, common to find already with highflow turbo and supporting modifications. Bring your own servo.

    • @mattdebyl8806
      @mattdebyl8806 2 ปีที่แล้ว

These except the airtreck are well on their radar and have been featured in other videos, including AK’s own Stagea. 850 was not RWD fwiw, they are front drivers.
Blade Master G has again been brought up previously, but there’s a couple thing to think about:
      1. You’d be lucky to get one for $15k and they don’t handle that well from factory. They’re also heavy, basically as heavy an an aurion with the same engine, but obviously smaller wheelbase and track. Yet you can get an aurion for $5k. Gives a lot more room for prep.
      2. The Blade Master G is hardly the only small hatch fitted with a big V6. The R32 golf had the same idea before it and is even shown in this video on the track. Oh and the A3 got the same setup but are cheaper. These both have AWD vs the FWD Toyota. Then there is the (now astronomically expensive, but used to be cheap) Alfa 147 GTA. Not to mention the absolutely excellent 130i from BMW, with RWD. So UHm, I’d say they were conforming quite a lot.
SR20 pulsar I reckon is a goodun, certainly more bang for buck than the Civics, though the Sport is quite a decent buy.
The Airtreck, where can you get them for under $15k? Also, manual?

I know some of them people will undoubtedly cry down but if they can survive doing races like the Dakar then why wouldn't they be able to handle themselves on a track?
Surprised at the topic for this list guys but good video regardless and look forward to Friday's video as always and I'm guessing it'll be the Suzuki Swift sport or an Alfa Romeo of some kind lol 😆.

A Holden Commodore or a Ford Falcon would also be a great track car (even in 6 cylinder form)... I'd just do a few suspension and handling mods and you have a reliable track car, and can be found for well under $15k...

The Celica was the worst piece of shit I have ever owned. My own fault for breaking my 'Never buy a Turdota' rule.

Even though i have an auto is250, I think it's still better than the BMW's and that's coming out of a BMW fanboy. Those who haven't driven a lexus are missing quite something, superb luxury and reliability when on road and with the right mods, good enough on the track for a fun weekend.

First three choices are bloody questionable. Should have stopped at civic type r. Focus xr5 or fiesta xr4/St would be far more suitable. Even a gt86.

BMW manuals are near impossible to find also. They’ve already been destroyed at the track I reckon.
