1973’s Papillon (recently it got a remake…), starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman in great performances, brought a well captured escape drama to audiences around the globe. The music, composed by Jerry Goldsmith is fitting as always. Although there isn’t a great load of music in the picture it hits, when it appears, especially so well-orchestrated cues like “Catching Butterflies” or “Gift From The Sea”, not to mention one of Goldsmith’s major pieces itself: The “Theme From Papillon”. Enjoy!
Love the movie and for sure one of my all time favourite Goldsmith score. The scene which, without fail even 30 years on, which still drives tears to my eyes each time I watch the movie is when Dega and Papillon meet again on Devils Island. The motions of that scene and Jerry setting the theme in a minor key to it with that almost painfully slow piano motif in the left hand makes the scene almost unbearable for me.
Bought this score when it first came out. Masterpiece then, masterpiece now. Filled with incredible creativity & imagination, combined with stirring, uplifting music of the highest order. The film was pretty violent for its time, so my theory is that Mr. Goldsmith went 'above and beyond' to infuse the score with healing, lyrical, therapeutic music while still managing to be intellectually challenging and ultimately one of the most satisfying works of his career. Liked & subscribed!
This score lost to The Way we Were. Just pointing: Marvin Hamlisch composed a score poor of material, with repetitions of the main theme! Papillon was robbed!

I read this story Papillon in TAMIL version long ago for more than 50 times. Same also I have in English version which I read two times. Already I am very much fond steve since his performance in Great escape. This movies I saw more than three times. Now only I am hearing theme song as well as re recording. Really it make some excitement in my mind and heart. I do not know why. It gives tear shed feel.

Hello Toon Boy, I didn't see it, but I am not really interested to do it, too. I liked the original movie. It's not my favorite but I am not into seeing another version of it. Or in your words: Why should one, if you have a decent original? If somebody strongly recommends something like that to me, I would watch, of course! Best! Fred
