I toddled over Carlos, grabbed his face and planted a big kiss on his lips! Carlos laughed and did the sign of the cross on me and said "This child is blessed!". So I always tell people, my first kiss was Carlos Santana 😂

Abraxis came out when I was 15 and I’ve spent the last 50 years expecting Oye Como Va to immediately follow when I hear Black Magic Woman, kinda like muscle memory. I’d bet I’m not the only one.
LOL. It always pisses me off when I hear Black Magic Woman and Oye Como Va doesn't follow. I literally curse at the DJ or radio program director.
Musical Muscle Memory©. It is a real thing. Many albums play in my brain after hearing a particular song by a favorite band. Example: If I hear More Than A Feeling by Boston, I'll just turn off the car radio and play the rest of the album in my head.
@@Sharkman1963 Exactly right. I suppose it’s our history with albums. On the Abraxis album I hear a transition between BMW and OCV, almost like it’s a two-part song and the radio cuts it off right in the middle. Gahhh!!
The order in question on Abraxas is "Black Magic Woman," "Gypsy Queen," then "Oye Como Va." BMW, as is well-known, was written by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac. Gypsy Queen was written by Gabor Szabo. "Oye Como Va?" No sé.
@@gj8683 So this is how it goes. The original album opens side one with Singing Winds, Crying Beasts then Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen, they’re not 2 separate songs, and then Oye Como Va and the side ends with Incident at Neshabur. This little tidbit of “stuff I know for sure” is ingrained in every fiber of my being. I think I mentioned that above. The other side is great too.
Why Carlos Santana is so cool: instead of having his band showcase him, he gathers PHENOMENAL musicians and just lets them cut loose. He’s all about the sound; he’s not about himself.
That's a good assessment of Carlos. I've only seen him once live ( on SuperNatural), but he stood mostly to the side and back of the stage and let the other band members take over the show. Robin Trower does pretty much the same thing.

The great thing about the 70s was the diversity of music. Santana was so different from anyone else but the music was totally embraced.
I don't know why "No One to Depend On" never gets any love, but it's a fantastic song
Batuka before it leading into it. Two awesome sonic orgasms that merge one onto the other. The whole A side of that album works (B side too). Santana III is an album to be listened to as an album, not as a pick a song type ordeal.

Abraxas is one of those "must own" albums.. it's practically a greatest hits album.
It's also a name of a band formed by Schon/Rollie. Sounds a lot like Santana. Give 'em a listen if you haven't already.

A couple of years ago Los Lobos played at a small baseball stadium about 2 blocks from where I live, I sat out in my backyard, smoking doobies and listening to them. Best free concert ever!
I'm not a huge fan of Eric Clapton, but his 2007 Crossroads was absolutely fantastic. And Los Lobos had a big part of that. It's worth watching. I liked it so much I bought it.

Santana’s first 3 albums were/are EPIC. Santana (I), Abraxas, and Santana (III) are fantastic start to finish, and yet he didn’t win a Grammy until his Supernatural release around 2K. Quite an unbelievable oversight.

Actually, Carlos himself made that joke when it was released, in front of some fans, some of which were Jewish. They ALL creased themselves laughing. The 60's to the 70's were a more accepting time, he might not have got away with it now.
If she wasn't in the mood before, she's tearing your clothes off after hearing Oye Como Va. Abraxis was the number one make out album for college students in the 70's.
The interesting thing about Santana is that none of their songs got the least bit dated. They all sound like they could have been released yesterday morning. It's unusual for a band's whole output to fall into this category.
Just to be clear, when you say Santana, you mean the Santana Band (1969-1972) output not Carlos Santana output. 'Cause a lot of Carlos' eighties output sounds very eighties. And I struggled with it even then.
Well I guess it's all subjective, because most of their stuff from this era just screams late 60/early 70s to me.
I disagree... if it were released yesterday morning it would be gridded, time corrected, auto tuned, have a digital drum and percussion track and sound nothing like it does. Haha. But yeah, this music sounds incredible and is pretty much timeless.
There certainly is a feeling of timelessness to his 60s & 70s, just as many other great artists have, but sound-wise you can definitely date them

Santana is not only the most easy-to-listen-to rock music out there, it is the most repeatable too- never gets old, never gets repetitive.

went to a Santana concert in London and house lights started to go down a guy walks across the stage sits on the edge and starts to play the bongos, within a couple of minutes the whole place is jiving to his rhythm, then behind him the whole band is on and starts playing this...... one of the best openings to a concert i have ever been to :)

Europa by Santana never fails to please.
"Europa" by Gato Barberi is a killer cut. Many babies made while their parents were listening to it.
The live version of "Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)" that appears on the compilation CD, Viva Santana, recorded in Osaka, Japan, in 1979 I think, is absolutely unbelievable. A sustained note during that jam is guaranteed to get The Lads jumping out of their seats. I know that's hard to imagine, so they should help out by making it happen on video.

One of my greatest pleasures was mixing this song live as a guest mixer for a Santana tour. Carlos talked with us for almost an hour pre-show, and he's a trip for sure. Go see Santana live once the world is sane again, and you will never forget.

1970 when this was released and I was 20...brought the album (on vinyl) still got it and still play it!
You like that Latin rhythm, try Steve Wonder's "Don't you Worry 'Bout a Thing." Super tasty! And also, "Smooth" with Santana and Rob Thomas. It is SOOOO awesome.
LOVE "Smooth." The guitar just sings! One of the most irresistible dance songs ever.
"Another Star" is powerful in the ways of Latin/Brazillian. amazing horns, percussion and Jazz flute(!) on the album version.

I just got through listening to a live performance by Tito Puente, who wrote Oye Como Va and it was absolutely stunning!! It was a performance done in the 90s and is the official video for Tito’s version. He is getting pretty old by then, helped onto the stage and up to his percussion kit but when he starts playing it’s like 30 years just melts away from him! The pure joy on his face as he begins to play is something everyone should witness!
And at the point of the organ solo on Santana’s version….. forget it!

Listen to the first 3 Journey albums, Pre-Perry. That's Gregg's work.
And people would haul that big ass piece of furniture and the Leslies around to get THAT sound.
My favorite part of this whole song is towards the beginning of the organ solo when he does that really quick flick of a key before digging into the next note. That little partial note can't be unheard and it really makes the whole solo for me.
PS - I ran into Gregg Rolie in a local store here and almost wet myself. Talk about a guy who has been there and done that. Chatted for awhile, nice guy (I wish I had told him how much I love that note)

@@1069KLICFM the curse of heavy rotation - it can sometimes take a decade or more after a great song gets overplayed _ad nauseam_ before it's possible to listen to it again and remember why everyone got so into it in the first place. But then, when you do, it's great. A&A have given me a few of those experiences here.
I remember in one of the promo interviews for the song & album, and Rob Thomas (still big as the frontman for Matchbox Twenty) said something like how he'd gotten big playing to teenagers, but then after awhile, those teenagers grow up - and buy Santana records.

This was originally a Tito Puente cha cha cha song from the sixties, although Santana definitely made it his own. Considering you guys really like this version and those Earth Wind and Fire horn sections, I highly recommend checking out the salsa jazz power super group the Fania All Stars, from the same era (Puente was a member): Ray Barretto - Lucretia the Cat (the remaster), Hector Lavo - Mi Jente, and Celia Cruz - Quimbara, those last two live from one of their best their best concerts, the Rumble in the June in Zaire, 1974. Also, Eddie Palmieri - La Malanga (the remaster). Carlos Santana occasionally gigged with Fania. You won’t be sorry! And if you only have time for one, it has to be Celia Cruz, the queen of salsa, live from Zaire, Quimbara.
Not cha cha, mambo. Tito Puente was known as the King of the mambo. In the ninties, he used to tell the story as he introduced Oye Como Va, that the first time someone in the audience said "play that Santana song", he got angry. But then he said "when the first royalty check arrived, I said I'll be happy to play that Santana song ! "

Tito was royally pissed off that rock musicians were doing his stuff until he started getting the checks. Later in life he apppreciated the exposure.
That's like how Bill Monroe never liked the rock and roll, but he started doing Blue Moon of Kentucky Elvis style instead of waltz style later in life.
Maybe I only heard part of a longer clip but I heard an interview with Puentes about 20 years ago and he was full of praise for Santana popularizing his and others' music. He also laughed about the royalties paying for his lunch for more than 20 years. Do you have a reference about him being pissed off?

I saw Paco with DiMiola and McLaughlin on Rick Beato’s channel. It was amazing to watch him play as fast as those two without a pick!

Met the band once in a music studio when I was there with another band and went to get a snack. They ended up pulling me into their studio and making me play conga with about twenty band and family members. I was extremely shy but it was pretty wonderful. Everyone was fantastic.
Saw him on stage, with a ton of people! That's the way to do a wall of sound!

Such a simple little tune, but Carlos can add absolute fire to any song with his guitar tone and arrangements. Carlos is one of those guitarists who are instantly recognizable and masterfully distinct.
agreed, a big part of the absolute greatness of the late 60s and early 70s, but uniquely stood out from all the others....a big reason he has done so much more throughout the years, always adjusting and evolving.....
One of my fave Santana songs. I did a presentation for a rock music class on him & learning his history just makes Santana that much more awesome.
I can't think of many Hispanic guitar player/singers, but one stands out. It's from back in Santana's time, and it's definitely not rock, but it's good. His name is Jose Feliciano. He does a cover of The Doors "Light My Fire", with great singing and short bursts of flamenco-like guitar work. Good Stuff. Check it out.

I think the most mismatched in history was Jimi Hendrix opening for The Monkees.
I have been to hundreds of concerts including Santana three times. Out of all those concerts seeing/ hearing that percussion section letting loose is one of the highlights. I got goosebumps watching them. And of course Carlos is a master and has not lost a thing.
His rhythm section was off the charts. OFF THE CHARTS.

Virtually anything from Moonflower is pure gold. That's peak classic Santana. Some of it is studio, some of it is live.
A nice start would be the first three tracks from the album (they're all under three minutes long and one flows right into the next without any breaks) Dawn/Go Within, Carnaval, and Let The Children Play.

I saw him live and he had 4 drum sections. Regular, steel, Congo and bongo. What a show! The congo drummer hands were just a blur he was playing so hard and fast.

If you're unfamiliar with all the great Spanish flamenco guitarists. Paco is a pop Flamenco guitarist.
I saw him in London in the late '90s playing with John Williams. Now, I don't think that Paco de Lucia was the greatest Spanish guitarist - for me that would be Andrés Segovia - but seeing him perform with, arguably, the greatest living guitarist was a treat.
Saw him live like 2003. Amazing!
1972: the local TV repair shop had a make-over...incense, black-light posters, hanging beaded curtains, 'smoking accessories' and Santana on endless loop on the Stereo!
The owners son had talked him into it...their Music Shop did great business for a couple of years, as there was no other place selling Rock and/or Roll records anywhere in Town.
Tower Records showed up, the little Shop went under.
" Jingo" by Santana a cover of legendary Nigerian Percussionist/artist
"Babatunde Olarunji". What Santana does is rooted in the same Yoruba rhythms. The Yoruba people of this region of West Africa were brought to Cuba and Puerto Rico and mixed with native indians resulting in Afro Cuban Ryjthms. From what is now reffered to as Mali came slaves to the US with their own musical traditions , generations later filtered and becoming American blues.

It's worth doing a full-album review of "Abraxas." Of the California scene leading into Woodstock, Santana was the absolute top instrumentally, speaking as a 66yo lifelong Californian. They might be at the top instrumentally of the whole USA at that time. A college friend of mine had only heard Abraxas in the background and in later years went to see Santana, only partly willingly. He came back and said "I thought Santana was only Oye Como Va" (rendering just those lyrics in a how-stupid-can-you-get tone) "but they absolutely COOKED!!"

The song was written by Tito Puente, a popular band leader and Timbales player, Carlos decided to cover this song, and it brought it to a whole new generation (level). The guy on organ is Greg Rolle, co-founded Journey.

WE are now in the days of the single - the song. However, the 4 song sequence that opens up side 1 ot the Abraxas album qualifies as a perfect album side. Oye Como Va is the 3rd song in the 4 song sequence. You go from a dreamy mystical instrumental. into the Latin tinged blues of Black Magic Woman. Immediately after the cut off note comes the organ intro to this song. followed by a rocking instrumental. Listen to those songs in sequence.
I am afraid listening to albums is a dying art.

This was a cover from Latin Percussion great "Tito Puente". This proves music does not have to be in English to be apealing. Guitarist "Mdou Mochtar" (Hendrix of the Sahara) from North Africa(Alex's Dad is from) would completely blow everyone away. I,lnless heard on classic rock radio majority would not give the time of day. For me Mochtar even deeper and heavier than Santana.

Saw Santana in the 80’s when they opened for the Stones. I love the Stones so much...but...Santana was very very close to being the best part of that concert. They blew me away! If u want to lose a bad mood, throw on some Santana!

I'd say honestly, you need to do the entire Abraxas album! It's an absolute classic! Santana's stuff ALWAYS gets me moving and wanting to grab my lady and dance! Latin beats are sex personified (it's the tango feel!)
