This movie will forever be a classic. Danny DeVito who played Mr Wormwood actually look after Mara (Matilda) during the film as her mum was fatally ill even went and got her an early copy of the movie before it was released so she could see her daughters work before she passed. He’s genuinely a lovely man

actress Mara Wilson that played Matilda went through a dreadful time during the filming of the movie . After learning that Wilson mother had breast cancer DeVito and his wife, Rhea Perlman (The actors that played Mara parents in the movie) spent the entire shoot of Matilda looking after Wilson, and ensuring she had the best experience possible.DeVito and Perlman even offered to take Wilson home with them when Mara parents needed to go to the hospital. DeVito managed to pay Suzie (Mara mother) a visit in the hospital just before she died and gave her a beautiful gift that meant a lot to Mara. Mara read the book Matilda before she even got the part, once she did Mara biggest and last wish was for her mother to see the movie. Once DeVito found that out he visited Suzie in secret and played her a rough cut of Matilda in the hospital. This allowed her to see her daughter in the movie before she died Wilson later learned of this and revealed it meant a lot to her. Suzie was also paid tribute in the film's credits. Matilda was dedicated to Wilson's mother, Suzie. She said: "I felt so glad when I saw that in the credits, and I still feel happy when I see that now. I'm so glad they did that." The young actress' mother died just a few months before Matilda would hit cinemas in August 1996.

Mara Wilson who played Matilda was very self-conscious about dancing in the scene where she masters her powers. So Danny DeVito got all the crew that were there to dance as well, to make her feel more comfortable.

The Trunchbull needed to be in a horror movie. i would pay just to see a horror where two burglars sneak into this house she stole she comes home and their lives are on the line if they get caught by this ogre of a woman with the strength of Hercules throwing her self off railings instead of taking the stairs smashing shit just to kill whoever was trying to steal.

My family definitely weren’t the Wormwoods but I could/can relate to Matilda as a kid as I was independent and loved to read in part because like her I felt different from those around me so books were an escape.

This movie is a time capsule into what kids movies were at the time, the 80s and especially 90s. They could get dark. The soundtrack is absolutely on point for 1996. It reminds me of growing up in Canada and those very 90s beer commercials with the 2 Labatt beer canoe guys from the 1600s reminiscing about what things would be like in the 90s. I still get a laugh out of them when I see them on TH-cam, like I do about Fido Dido, the cool, hip 90s stick man in the 7up commercial. This is just a nostalgia trip. More kids need to see this than early 2000s and 2010s Nickelodeon, made by a guy who was abusing underage kids. Most of the people who were in music, Disney or Nickelodeon in the late 90s and into the 2000s and 2010s are messed up in some way. Amanda Bynes, Britney Spears, Jeanette McCurdy...they're all a complete mess because of what happened to them as kids. This actress, Mara Wilson, managed to get out early on and became a stage actress and writer. Apparently, these roles were the furthest from her real personality. She was more of a tomboy and Hollywood wanted her to be Shirley Temple.

The song "Little Bitty Pretty One" came out in 1957, so it was around long before Matilda, but you're right. I think a lot of 90s kids first heard it in this movie. For me, though, I know this song because my dad used to sing it to my little sister all the time.

Matilda is played by child actress Mara Wilson - she played in a handful of big budget movies. Mrs. Doubtfire alongside Robin Williams and Miracle on 34th St. After her mom died of cancer she wasn't interested in doing movies anymore and began acting in plays until she graduated college. Now, she's a writer, does work on podcasts, and occasionally does voice acting. She has no interest in film.

It's funny because as mean as Danny Devito and his real life wife is in this movie the actress stills talks about how nice and kind Danny was to her and how amazing they are in real life and they're still close.

This movie has always remained in a very special place in my heart. I absolutely love it! It's funny, it's heartfelt, it's tragic and it's fun! In answer to your question about the girl who plays Matilda, her name's Mara Wilson and she's done a few other projects like before this, she was in Mrs Doubtfire, after this, she was in a movie called A Simple Wish and a few other things. She quit acting around the early 2000s and is now a writer. I think she still does a few voice over projects like audio book readings.

0:48 A couple of days ago my mom asked if I wanted to see the new Indiana Jones movie. I told her I haven’t seen the first four yet, so why would I want to watch that one. And it’s not as if I am unaware of the contents of the movies. I have played video games based off Indiana Jones. I have watched Young Indiana Jones (doesn’t relate to the contents of the movies, but still connected media). It’s not that I have no interest. I just haven’ seen them . . . yet.
Last year when the new Ghostbusters movie came out, I wanted to watch that, but I wanted to watch it with someone, so I asked my mom to see it with me and you know what, she’d never seen the other movies. She was interested, so we watched the first movie and then we watched the new one. It was a lot of fun, but also kind of weird seeing my mom watch it for the first time.
Sometimes that’s just how it is. A movie can be around for a long time, something everyone’s seen, and yet, you aren’t part of that everyone.

20:13 Who'd believe the children or the teachers if they went around saying that the principal threw children out of windows or over fences?
If they said she'd hit them with the riding crop she carried around, they'd believe her, that's something that's strictly against the law (now - though not in Roald Dahl's day, though if he got hit I think it was mostly with a walking stick or the cane rather than the crop), but what the Trunchball does is so outrageous that even if someone was brave enough to say something (and they're all too frightened of her to say anything) no one would believe them.

23:25 I have irrational fears of Onryō, ghouls, and demonic possession. But my most problematic fears are long lines and not being able to find a parking spot. (These have actually led to panic attacks.)

The child actor who played Matilda is now grown up her name is Mara Wilson she did some acting when she was a kid and she did a little bit more acting in her late 20s early 30s but I think she's mostly a writer.
