I was introduced to Maestro Sakamoto’s music later in life and I was so sad hearing of his passing. However, discovering his music was an extraordinary opportunity to get to know him through his music. I am not a musician or a very savvy individual when it comes to various genres of music yet Sakamoto’s music was able to find me and meet me where I am in my life right now. There is so much I want to listen to and I am hoping I can find others more familiar with his music that can help guide me through the numerous pieces of music he created. RIP Maestro🌹
Sincerely moved by this interview. Who ever interviewed Sakamoto did his homework. I shed a tear at the end when his collaboration with Bowie was mentioned. Ryuichi's regret of not pursuing that friendship is profound and touching, one can sense it in his emotion and gesture.
Back in the early 80's I had this guy in the back of my taxi from Bath train station taking him to Peter Gabriel's Studio in Box village near Bath. Very nice guy...
The fact that he always pays attention to the questions and makes sure he gives an answer, even if it’s not straight away shows a level of consideration for the interviewer and the public that is very admirable. Imagine being at that age, giving maybe your 2020th interview and still caring. And he tries to guess what the public really wants to know by each question, giving as many interesting information as possible. Not going off topic or dismissing our curiosity. He appears to be such a good person
The fact he mentioned Caetano Veloso makes me so happy! Brazilian music is my joy and sustenance, much like Ryuichi's music. In fact, he has some amazing Bossa Nova albums. The best of both worlds.
As I heard his symphony (Discord) the first time especially the mighty passacaglia at the end of it's final movement for me the successor of Mahler's fourth was born. Wow I followed his music before the release of Discord, but I never, never, never expected, that this fine composer fully understanding the subtil revolution in making music of Claude Debussy writes a piece, that I like to compare with my two favorite post Beethoven symphonies of Gustav Mahler (Second and Fourth). Now the global music scene have to bear his lost on this side of being. Now he enriches the orchestra in heaven with his kind of genius. For me Claude Debussy died twice. 😭
I first came across Ryuichi Sakamoto in the movie 'Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence'. The music score from that movie is amazing. Also, David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto - Forbidden Colours, is an incredible track.
Sakamoto-san later retracted his opinion on Ozu’s music he expressed in this interview. In a conversation with Wim Wenders at the Berlin International Film Festival Classics Section in Feb, 2018, he said that he came to believe that Ozu's works' music is carefully calculated and consciously created in line with tradition.
It's sad that he is largely recognized for his work in cinema and his collaboration with David Sylvian, but he has an extraordinary career as a producer/arranger in Japan in the 70s/80s. I recommend the song '4.00AM' by Taeko Onuki

He appears to be such a good person
Not to mention the fact that English isn't his first language and is notoriously difficult for Japanese people to master.
A true icon.
Thank you for your being, and your words, really inspiring. Thank you Mr. Sakamoto
He's so stylish!
A very good interview with one of the most sublime and special composer of our time!
He's always so elegant.
So happy I get to live in a world with Sakamoto-san's thought and composition.
I couldn't agree more. And heartbreaking for his untimely death. ❤️🩹
RIP ❤ Forbidden Colours with David Sylvian will always be one of my favourite songs
Quel musicien fascinant... Quelle classe, aussi. Longue vie, Sakamoto-san.
