  • How did Matrix Software go so wrong with this one after having done such a good job with the DS remakes of Final Fantasy III and IV? From a terrible job system to awful dungeon design, this spiritual precursor to Bravely Default gets almost nothing right. Join Stiles as he critiques this highly disappointing adventure.

      It was an amazing time for bootlegging every classic rpg I could get my hands on, especially translated rpgs that never made it to the states. I remember that laptop full of every rpg/games from ps1 to OG Nintendo, now I'm old and there's nothing left to enjoy. 😂

    i thought the game was decent, but i do agree with your points. i recently replayed it and i thought the art direction hard carried it. all the bosses ended up being the same strategy, magic might, lux, mysterio, finale, cure. I am glad it exists as bravely exists because of it, and i wanna try that game again. im still new to final fantasy, so i guess its uphill from here.

    Oh boy, I remember a friend getting me tales of symphonia for my b day and at the party my friends were super excited to play it together, not realizing that for the first few hours you're almost entirely limited to 1 or 2 party members. That was awkward lol.

      Yeah, to me the Tales series is single player only, even if the box says otherwise. Having a friend mash buttons when there happens to be battles is a very limited amount of gameplay in and rpg

    Just going to bookmark this video for later.
    4 heroes of light is easily one of my favorite RPGs ever, it's not a good game, but it's undeniably charming and had some bold design decisions, most didn't land, but they all stuck with me ever since I played it. Yeah, it's not good, but there's nothing else quite like it to me, and that's better than a good but forgettable game (Nostalgia, another DS RPG meant to be a throwback comes to mind).
    I'll watch this video once I replay the game, which I've been meaning to do for a while. I do disagree with the title though, it's not because some ideas were poorly executed that this style of game is wrong, if you want to see how not to do an RPG, look at the original Wizardry games.
    Hope this doesn't come off as an offense, I respect your opinion and I'm glad you did a video on it, whether you liked it or not, it seems you also are passionate about it in some way.

    Great review. I always feel that while new creative turn based RPGs are still being made nowadays, they still have the same objective of AAA games: we need X hours of story content. Back when games were limited by storage space the objective was way different: We need to make a great story that fits in a X kB cartridge. And that makes the end result pretty different games (even when they use older games as inspirations, like I am Setsuna).

    I totally disagree with the part about enemies scaling to your level. If you want to grind, you won't find yourself blasting through the game with no difficulty at all, and you can still explore the job system without ending with that overleveled experience, while if you just want to focus on progressing without exploring that much the job system you can still progress without finding a lvl wall in your way, making the game enjoyable for two completely opposite playstyles.

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I recall correctly, the level scaling is SPECIFICALLY in the bonus dungeons, though it's been a while since I did the research for this video. I don't remember overleveling being an issue in the game anyway because you get exp really slowly.

      @@OneStopBopShop The 360's JRPGs were weird because early on? It had the most. Microsoft knew their lack of JRPGs was a huge flaw so they actually put out a bounty on JRPGs: They would help fund any JRPG that came to 360 (with implied exclusivity). That's why FromSoftware rushed out the uncharacteristically anime Enchanted Arms, why Tales of Vesperia happened first (and likely why we didn't get the PS3 version: I bet it was partially funded by MS to be an exclusive and Namco abused a loophole to make the PS3 version. Just a hunch), and indeed why Microsoft bankrolled MistWalker's RPGs Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey.
      But JRPG fans were convinced the PS3 would have more just because of what happened last gen and there was a weird backlash against JRPGs and anime styling in general that generation (likely due to anime hitting mainstream fad levels around 2005 and there were an overwhelming number of "Everything from Japan is superior to everything else"-types around that time) so the need for 360 JRPGs petered out.
      My favorite 360 RPG was Magna Carta 2, one of the few that was playable on a standard definition TV (I literally wear glasses now from trying to play JRPGs on 360 on SD TVs) and once you get the hang of its weird action turn-based hybrid combat, it's pretty fun...but it's also Korean so not EXACTLY a JRPG. Lost Odyssey was clearly good but...I actually had to stop because it made me cry too much. That game had too many feels.

    Oh MAN! Good to see another video from you and I wholeheartedly agree. I haaated 4 Heroes of Light but that was because it was a faux throwback. I was seriously bothered by how they used chiptune music yet not a single familiar Final Fantasy tune or jingle (not even the victory fanfare). Like...what's the point of making it chiptune then?! This felt like a case of a game trying to be modern and retro at the same time and the ideas clashing horribly...much like the DS remake of FF3 that I hate too. It was even more frustrating because the spin-offs Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Tales and Mario Sports Mix both do a great job of being Final Fantasy throwback games and I always wished they'd make an RPG based on those games...but for some reason as soon as they decide to make an RPG, all the Final Fantasy throwback elements go out the window. That was my beef with World of Final Fantasy as well.
    Also I actually agree on Tales of Eternia being the best! Well more accurately I really like Tales in 2D over 3D and unfortunately due to Sony America's garbage "quality control" policies, we never got most of the GOOD 2D Tales games. Thankfully a fan translation of the PS2 remake of Tales of Destiny just came out and I'm almost in tears with how good that game is as Destiny PS2 is my dream Tales game...though I wish it had the Combo Command item.
    ...and yeah you're not wrong, Tales took off because it had no competition. Tales isn't a hyper polished JRPG series, it's a middle budget, regularly churned out series that builds off of and experiments with its base concepts and evolves them over time. Heck, I'm actually worried about the upcoming Tales of Arise because spending 5 years in development and trying to make a polished AAA Tales game goes completely against the series identity (to say nothing of the more generic non-linear motion combat and lack of multiplayer support).
    Anyway keep up the good work! Oh and as for Bravely Default? I'm new to the series but from what I've seen, I think Bravely Default 1 was a brilliant fluke and both of its sequels fall woefully short of understanding what made that first game great.

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I saw the Destiny Remake translation also... im glad it is out but also wish they had prioritized Destiny 2, since it doesnt havw an english version at all yet.
      As for Bravelt Default... -spoilers- i enjoyed what i played until the atupid freakin' time loop, which was so furiatingly tedious i put the game down and never picked it up again. I feel like it too was a game that was over praised because we werent getting a lot of classic style jrpgs at the time.

I bought it again just last year and still couldn't get into it. And I actually felt it might have been the old-school elements that turned me off, but after watching your video and further reflection, I think that is wrong. I happily played NES FF 1, Dragon Warrior, and recently FE 1 and 2 without much problem. The problem does likely stem from the battle mechanics and story not jiving with me.

      @@StilesReviews My main issue with Bravely Default is the battle system. I think the BP system is dumb. I think it ruins the entire flow of turn-based battles. Battles in Bravely Default turn into trying to defeat the enemy before they even get a turn or the enemy shoving you in the dirt by getting two turns a piece against your characters. And dexterity affects BP...but like that's it. Final Fantasy X is my favorite turn-based battle system. You can potentially have characters get two turns in a row. But this is dependent on your actions. In FFX, every character is meshed together dependent on speed. With a haste buff and quick attack or delay attack, you can potentially dominate the amount of turns you get as opposed to an enemy. And this even serves as a strategy against malboro that can ambush and bad breath you. For starters, there is a lot of back and forth between you and the enemy. And also, you have the agency in planning how you affect turns. It isn't some BP stack. And I think FFX has a WAY better flow in its battles. And having two attacks in a row feels more earned. You don't have all your characters attacking right away automatically. BP just doesn't feel interesting mechanically to me. I think it sucks, especially comparing it to FFX where you can kinda, sorta do similar things. FFX would be the perfect turn based game to me if there was more balance to the progression system and maybe the characters had set roles through the entire game. But I guess then Tidus would be like the only person able to manipulate the act list, which would throw that mechanic out the window. Is Tidus a Time Mage? xD Also, sucks that Blu Magic and Alchemy are locked behind overdrives, but off topic. But yeah, I think the flow of battles in BD is terrible and I think the turn based battles in BD are boring as hell because of it.
      Sorry for the long reply, but I just wanted to explain why I disliked BD while praising my favorite Final Fantasy :P

    I do realize that the first 3 are very late PS2 games, but both P3 and P4 got expanded versions on the PSP and Vita, and went on to be some of the best games on the systems, with P4G being widely regarded as THE best game on the Vita, with Trails of Cold Steel I+II following behind.

    Anyway, now I've said TH-cam Stereotypical Comment #47, I am glad this video exists. A lot of times people seem to have a hard time stating what specifically makes a game feel kinda "ehh." It definitely reminds me a little of Bravely Default (which you should play at some point; there's a little bit of a sloggy bit 3/4 of the way through but the true ending is _bananas_ and I don't think I've smiled that much during a JRPG boss... probably ever before than or since? It's great The others are pretty okay.)... um...
    Oh, yeah, it reminds me of BD but the execution being focused in a slightly different way looks like it brought the whole thing down. A lot of games do that and sometimes it leads to a better game later.
    Or someone like EA absorbs them, makes them do stuff they've never done before, is surprised when it isn't good and then takes them out back to re-enact _Ol' Yeller._ Or, probably better, the company just straight-up closes. Quicker that way, yeah?

    I really need to go back and replay 4HoL. Admittedly, I'd forgotten most of the nuances you complain about, like the lack of targeting, but I still remember being quite fond of the game. I'd be interest to go back and see how much that nostalgia still holds up for me.
    Besides, I technically never finished the game... which admittedly might sound like a strike against it, but was less to do with me getting bored with the game and more to do with me being a bit of an overly obsessive perfectionist and I got hung up while trying to grind out one particular boss's rare drop.
    I'm pretty sure I've still got my old save file, so I could probably pickup where I left off, but I would probably want to start up a new file, at least long enough to refamiliarize myself with the gameplay.

      I'm glad my obvious joke somehow came off as 'me stating a fact'. I thought the visual cut off and sound effect would've made it clear it was tongue in cheek. And yes, I've beaten every Final Fantasy game, spin-off and otherwise, besides Stranger of Paradise, FFXIV and Lightning Returns. I've 100 percented FFXIII, and beaten it normally three times total. My OPINION is that I don't like the game, despite appreciating what it was going for.

    Since the only DS games I have played are Final Fantasy 3 and Tales of the Tempest, I have a really low opinion on the DS games in general, like when I see DS game I cringe internally. The writing for those two is just something I really can't stand for the life of me. I, of course, understand that not all DS games are like that, probably, but I can't shake this feeling with logic. Devil Survivor 1 & 2 are technically DS games I guess, but they are 3DS games for me, so it doesn't help (those are awesome). From what I've seen, FF The 4 Heroes of Light seems like the same deal.

    • @StilesReviews

      Ds had a lot of great games, but youve definitely gotten a bad handful haha. I really like what ive played of Devil Survivor, owned it on original DS and have the 3DS one now.

    • @GELTONZ
      @GELTONZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's actually sad because the DS had some of the best JRPGs of that generation. Namely Dragon Quest IX and especially Radiant Historia. I'd also give a shout out to Super Robot Taisen: OG Saga: Endless Frontier though that can be a bit of an acquired taste. Also the other 2 or 3 DS Tales games (Keroro RPG is a Tales game) are MUCH better.
      ...oh and Phantasy Star Zero and Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow were solid multiplayer dungeon crawlers with good single player too. I also REALLY like Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals but that's a weird mixed bag (one minute I'm stun locked by MOTHS, the next I've turned the canonically weakest character into someone so strong no one else can compete with her extreme damage to the point where that HAS to be a bug).
      And then there's SaGa 2 and 3 remakes, also acquired tastes but the SaGa 2 remake is literally my favorite RPG of all time...and DQ9 is my second or third favorite...so 2 of my 3 favorites are on DS. Huh. I feel like there are other really good ones I'm forgetting but if I had to recommend one I'd probably go with Radiant Historia.

    Turn based JRPGs are still to this day few and far between.

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not really. Not like that era anyway. Indie turn based games come out all the time, and even the big names are dropping a decent number, though they do tend ro be lower budget. Just this year we have Persona 3 Reload, Like a Dragon zinfinite Wealth, Eiyuden Chronicles, SaGa Emerald Beyond, Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, Metaphor: Re:Fantazio, Legend of Legacy HD, Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak...the list goes on

    • @noddypeak
      @noddypeak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@amimm7776 It was a DS game that was constricted by hardware, time and staff. The game mecanics were serviceable enough that I never thought of them as a real problem and the story is a classic retelling of FF's old premise and is very aware of it. Why are we down playing the importance of art direction, character writing and music in an jrpg? I agree the execution could have been better but I apprecciate the risks the game took. I played Bravely first then 4HoL, and while I love Bravely I much rather play 4HoL.
