Predator Movie Description:
Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a soldier of fortune, is hired by the U.S. government to secretly rescue a group of politicians trapped in Guatemala. But when Dutch and his team, which includes weapons expert Blain (Jesse Ventura) and CIA agent George (Carl Weathers), land in Central America, something is gravely wrong. After finding a string of dead bodies, the crew discovers they are being hunted by a brutal creature with superhuman strength and the ability to disappear into its surroundings.
Predator is a 1987 American science fiction action film directed by John McTiernan and written by brothers Jim and John Thomas.[4] It is the first installment in the Predator franchise. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leader of an elite paramilitary rescue team on a mission to save hostages in guerrilla-held territory in a Central American rainforest, who encounter the deadly Predator (Kevin Peter Hall), a technologically-advanced alien who stalks and hunts them down.
Predator was written in 1984 under the working title of Hunter. Filming ran from March to June 1986 with creature effects devised by Stan Winston; the budget was around $15 million. 20th Century Fox released the film on June 12, 1987 in the United States, where it grossed $98.3 million. Initial reviews tended toward the negative, but the film has since been reappraised as a classic of the action genre.
The success of Predator spawned a media franchise of films, novels, comic books, video games, and toys. It spawned three direct sequels: Predator 2 (1990), Predators (2010) and The Predator (2018), and an upcoming installment in preproduction.[5] A crossover with the Alien franchise produced the Alien vs. Predator films, which include Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007).

There was no disrespect when the predator disposed of Billy's body. He respected Billy for standing and fighting with a knife. That's why he kept his spine & skull as a trophy.
Billy knew the Predator wouldn't use his ranged weapons if he didn't have one. That's why he drops his gun and draws the knife instead. The Predator wants a fair fight or it will dishonor him.
Billy's death was the saddest for me, honestly. But even though we didn't see the stand off, the yautja respected him as a worthy foe, and kept his skull as a trophy. I'm pretty sure Billy was his favorite kill. Shame we never find out what the yautja's name was.

@@rhaenyralikesyoutube6289 And for those who don't know (since it's never mentioned in any of the movies), "yautja" is the name of the predator race in their own language, as explained in some of the novels featuring them (probably comic books too, but I never read any of them).
Originally, Dutch was supposed to beat the Predator in hand-to-hand combat, but it was Arnold who said that it wouldn't make any sense. He said something like "He's a monster, and I'm just a man. I can't beat him in a fist fight," so they changed the story so that Dutch gets his ass kicked and has to outsmart the Predator to survive.
Honestly it was the right choice. To see as jacked of a man that Arnold is get his ass handed to him in physical combat and have to rely on his brains to win, that's a much more compelling story than if he just out macho'd the Predator. Especially noteworthy for being an 80's action film with the foresight to do that.
He also only wounded Dutch slightly with the shoulder weapon because he wanted a worthy hunt saved for the leader of the group.
More than the right choice. Arnie beating the Predator, who has already proven that he is the much stronger fighter, would just have been unbelievable. And after all: humans are a threat for Predators because of their ingenuity, not because of their strength. Dutch showcasing that is a much more powerful message than relying on brute strength for this fight. It also shows that Dutch is not a dummy.

So the Predator killed Blane without making him to blood.
Poncho advised him to duck, but did not manage to duck the log himself. The Predator finished him off to end his torment.
Mac wanted to carve his name on the Predator. The Predator did just that to him.
Dillon lost in armwrestling. The Predator ripped off his arm.
Hawkins joked about the genitals. The Predator snatched them away from him.
Billy challenged the Predator to a duel. The Predator accepted the challenge.
The Predator lost a fair fight to Dutch. So he gave him time to leave.
Funnily enough, that "disrespectful" spine rip is probably the highest honor you could receive dying in a fight with a Predator. They take your skull/spine if you put up a great fight as a trophy, as if to say "damn you were a worthy foe, I'll take something to remember you by".
Which is potentially noteworthy too that he merc'd Mac right through the dome and spoiled the prize. ..

If there was a deeper reason it could also have been because I think Mac is the one who hit Predator with a round early on that left the blood that the woman saw.
Or just that Mac was too entwined within and under that fallen tree for the Predator to really be bothered otherwise.

@@nenorii3234 Except that A) The Predator is more powerful than his foes physically. Apparently it's never heard of "Pick on someone your own size." B) Starts fights by surprise itself. After all, look at how he took out his first 'kill'. C) Normally goes after humans that are just trying to hunt non-intelligent game for their food, so they are no real match for him. At least Arnold's group was a bunch of super jacked highly skilled Commandos with weapons far better than those of village hunters. D) Freaking uses camouflage itself and of a better type than the humans. What kind of double-standards does that thing have to judge Mac?

When the Predator pulled out Billy's spine and skull that wasn't a show of disrespect, it was a sign of full respect because Billy fought with 'honor'.

You also get a quick glimpse of Kevin Peter Hall out of the Predator costume, he was also the pilot of the helicopter that was picking up Arnold's character at the end of the movie
I was going to mention this but you beat me to it. I think the director said something like: "The poor guy was in that suit a lot...in that jungle be heat and didn't complain once so I had to put him in the movie to honor that. Kevin is a true professional."
I think it's interesting how both him and Bolaji Badejo who played the alien died a little over a year apart. Kevin died of AIDS and Bolaji died of Sickle Cell Anemia
@@tremorsfan Kevin received a blood transfusion and the blood used in that transfusion was infected with HIV. He shouldn't have died. I don't know much about sickle cell disease or how treatable it is.

the thing about it is that it begins full of testosterone and when the Predator starts to do his thing the testosterone levels drops drastically... so, they go from testosterone to making poo in their dipers, very clever movie

Arnold was a Tank Operator for the Austrian Army at one point in his youth. He told a story of him and his buddy getting piss-drunk one day and their Commander disciplined their asses by making them climb up the top hatch of the tank, crawl to the floor hatch down into the ground and crawl out and then up the tank again for 30 reps while drunk. He said he felt like he was gonna die that day.
He'd also went to compete in a bodybuilding competition, without approval from his superiors, upon returning to base, he was put in the stockade, after learning why he'd went AWOL and finding out how well he'd placed in the bodybuilding competition, he was released from custody and given orders to continue training for future bodybuilding competitions

He also bought the tank he operated a few years ago and had it sent over lol. He said he was glad he waited because when he was at full competition weight he wouldn't be able to fit through the drivers cubby. But now that he's 60 lbs trimmer he can.

On my wedding day my wife and I had a quiet ceremony, a nice meal after then we got a taxi home, got some drinks poured and watched Predator. It was excellent!
The Predator uses the weapon he feels is worthy of his prey. The guy with the heaviest weapon got taken out by the Predator's most powerful weapon. The woman without any weapon he let go. Schwarzenegger he shot to disarm, because it looked like he was worthy of close and personal combat. The thing the Predator was really after, the most dangerous game.
That guy you said was a MAN is Jesse “The Gov” Ventura. He’s also a Navy Seal who was once the Governor of Minnesota. He was in the World Wrestling Entertainment.

Arnold actually went to a dialect coach in the late 80's, but after some fans got confused when he talked with an American accent he went back to his austrian.
To this day, he still uses a dialect coach to help him maintain his accent after so long living in the US.
Am I crazy for wanting to hear his American accent now? I'm sure it'll freak me out and want to him to go back to the Austrian, but still...curiosity is a bitch.

The Predator is a trophy hunter and it's not just the skin of the victims he collects but also the Skulls
In the novel, Dutch finds the Predator's camp and sees the skins mounted on upright frames. I remember it described the scalps hanging off the top of skins and flapping in the wind.
The Predator only takes the skulls from worthy kills. The skins are from prey who didn't fight well or showed cowardice.

They're actually both trace-overs of Stallone, one of them just looks a lot like Arnold.
The Predator’s initial design looked like a giant space lobster and Jean Claude Van Damme was cast to play him. Van Damme couldn’t stand the heat and not being able to move around in the suit so he quit after two days. The director flipped his shit when he saw what the monster looked like so the studio hired Stan Winston to redesign him. Stan Winston drew the Predator as we see him with the mask on a flight with James Cameron but he didn’t know what the face should look like and James Cameron said he always wanted to see something with mandibles. Also Jessie Ventura, Bill Duke and the actor who played Poncho are all Vietnam vets.
Predator: Concrete Jungle, is the best Predator game.
An underrated gem and my all time favorite Predator video game.
It has its problems, but the experience is so quality, it’s unreal. Easily one of my most favorite games ever.
Arnold served 1 year in the Austrian Army, back in the 60's, mandatory for all 18 year old males in Austria.
He was a tank driver if I recall some of the stories he's told correctly.
The shot where the Predator heals and throws its head back in pain with the sun beams shining through the trees is one of my fave shots of the movie

I'm not a fan of the "when men were men" saying, but the sheer, unrelenting, unapologetic testosterone in this movie has no chance of being replicated today. Though, I'd love to be proven wrong!

Testosterone: The Movie!!!!!!
Kevin Peter Hall was a tall ass man. He built a significant part of his career playing aliens. Man was in movies, TV, all over the place. It was rare that you ever got to see his face without prosthetic make-up.
He's actually the pilot of the chopper
he was a regular on the TV show 227 back in the late '80s to early '90s and he was Harry in Harry and the Hendersons and was the Predator again in the sequel

I saw this in the theater in 1987 when I was 12. My first R rated movie.
The director of this movie, John McTernian made some of the best action movies of the 80’s-early 90’s. Die Hard, Die Hard with a Vengeance, The Hunt for Red October, The 13th Warrior to name a few, all are worth checking out.😎
Yep, he also did a decent remake of The Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan.
I love most of Thirteenth Warrior. Underrated.
There's some stuff about this movie that makes it a lot cooler when you think about it, and some stuff you miss on first pass. It's a lot deeper than most action thrillers from the time.
First, to clarify; Dutch wasn't killed by the Plasma shot cos it hit his gun, not his gut. It knocked him back and showered him with burning hot shrapnel.
The top of Mac's head was taken off by the Plasma, it's just kinda hard to see.
Finally, the fact that The Predator laughs in Dutch's face at the end is all the more galling when you realise he's laughing at him using a facsimile of his dead friend's laugh. It's like the ghosts of the men he failed to save are gloating at him.
This is a really cool movie. The sequel is good too, and while I like the third film, they all get a bit shit after Predator 2.
All the big guys got into competition with each other exercising to gain inches and weight. They had to get their costumes adjusted every week. Weather's and Arnold got into a fierce competition.
Jesse Ventura is a former pro wrestler and did commentary for the WWF in the late 80s. He also was governor of Minnesota meaning this movie spawned TWO governors (the other being Schwarzenegger who was governor of California).
And the actor who played Billy threw his hat in for Kentucky governor. He didn't win.
Should definitely check out True Lies or Last Action Hero ifyou havent seen them....Action and comedy..

True Lies is Schwarzenegger's best film.
This design of the Predator looks awesome. The original concept was more of a tall insect creature with a harpoon shooter arm. Jean Claude VanDam actual played the original Predator but the insect suit was too awkward and I think he quit. The Predator was redesigned and Keven Peter Hall played him. He was also the black helicopter pilot near the end.
also VanDamme was too short in comparison to Arnold, wouldn't look very threatening during the final fight.
Arnold didn´t go to the school of one - liners; He founded it!
The predator aimed at arnold's weapon, that's why he was only ligthly hurt.
This movie sired more governors as a percentage than any Ivy League university.
Think about that for a second.

Attempt to bait the Predator, maybe thinking the Predator can sense fresh blood. Overall the Predator more like sees it as being challenged, so it likely was duel with no ambush, as Predators actually have some code of honor.

Mello, this is my favorite sci-fi horror movie of all time. I’m a big predator fan and a huge Arnold fan. I haven’t watched the entire video but I can tell you will enjoy this just as much as I did!! I’m excited brother!

Awesome movie, one of the real classics. Now some people might not, but I really like the 2nd Predator as well, so I would recommend it if you want more of the alien. Danny Glover is awesome since he doesn’t lose dialogue throughout the film like Arnold and really is the best part of the film.

Great movie. I usually don't like horror movies but this is mixed with action and it is an Arnold movie :) . Please do The Running Man 1987 a very underrated great movie with Arnold that came out the same year and was overshadowed by this movie.
Nobody reacted to this great movie yet. Fun fact this movie take place in the jungles of a fictional country which the villain of Die Hard 2 come from and the villan from Commando another Arnold movie come from . So Predator, Die Hard and Commando are kind of in the same universe :). Also the pilot in the chopper in the end is actually the one who played the predator.

Jean Claude Van Damme was considered to play the Predator but dropped out due to wearing the suit, complaining it was too hot and that he wanted the Predator to kickbox, but the Producers refused.
They also had to redesign the creature, it just wasn’t looking intimidating enough. Interesting trivia in the making of this film for anyone curious.

1987 was almost as good a year for movies as 1984. Predator, Robocop, Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop II, Full Metal Jacket, The Untouchables, The Lost Boys, The Princess Bride, Fatal Attraction, Moonstruck, Wall Street, Dirty Dancing, Good Morning Vietnam, Spaceballs, Three Men and a Baby, Raising Arizona, The Witches of Eastwick, The Running Man, all came out in 1987.
Well after having a 10 video marathon of your content, its very much like having a friend whos actually interested in all of my old timey favorite movies, I remember watching this on VHS and thinking the Predator was the most bad ass sci-fi character of all time, thank you for watching these movies so I can enjoy seeing another persons reaction to these ageless classics....subbed

I just watched The Good, the Bad and the Ugly for the first time yesterday - it was so amazing and I appreciate the hell out of your using it as your intro/outro music. Also, Predator is one of my favorites.

I don't know what inspired the design of the predator but the movie was inspired after Rocky 4 when he fought the Russian. The joke was Rockys next fight would be against a Alien which inspired the writer to come up with the script. Also the original title was called The Hunter

The craziest fun fact about this movie to me is how the first Predator design was so terrible and hilarious, it looked like a giant beetle insect thing with lame gadgets... and it had Jean-Claude Van Damme inside the suit! He is much shorter than Arnold and there is a picture of him sitting on a log in the jungle almost crying, telling Arnold how ridiculous he feels inside the suit. Arnold / The Director called James Cameron and Stan Winston who did the special fx and design for Terminator and Aliens and said "we need a brand new creature design that will actually scare Arnold. It has to have muscles, be taller than him, and a humanoid type design." Stan Winston and James Cameron were on an airplane. Stan started sketching a design and James said "I've always wanted to see mandibles on a creature's face". Within a couple weeks, they shipped it and flew the new actor out to the jungle to join the cast who finished filming every scene they could that did not involve showing the Predator. It is truly among the very coolest creature designs of all time, if not the coolest, entirely designed and made last minute.
Predator 2 is pretty darn good. Considering the challenges of a sequel, made in 1990, and moving the location to L.A., I think they did a great job, but the first movie still wins for sure. After Predator 2, every other movie featuring the Predator is a TOTAL joke, and all of us true fans kept taking huge punches to the gut every time they screwed up so badly in every other movie. They always forget to capture what made this film so dam good. Kevin who played Predator in 1 and 2 died of AIDs after part 2. He brought such a unique, cat-like, strange element that made it more terrifying, interesting, and believable as a creature that is not from Earth. I wish no other movie was ever made past part 2. They only decreased its lore and appeal overall.
Conan, Predator, Kindergarten Cop, Terminator I and II are my childhood. Thanks for the fun memories Arnold. These movies make me a kid again!
