With the announcement of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Shredder's Revenge coming to modern hardware to reignite the classic Turtles, I felt this week would be as good a time as any to use my existing Turtles assets to create a huge 2-hour special. In terms of videos of this style, this one was the toughest to make yet and required the most effort to convert into one Supersize video. The first key difference between making this video and others was that I produced the original Turtles videos out of order of release and constantly referred to videos I had made previously. Each video needed to be recut in such a way that this whole video tells one cohesive story, something the original episodes failed to do. The biggest change of all though relates to the TMNT Turtles in Time segment of the movie. Some of you may recall that I made an error with the production of that episode causing all of the sound to come through just the left speaker, so something needed to be done if I wanted a decent TIT segment. Not only that, but the TIT episode flowed within this omnibus terribly as it was a Streets of Rage 2 comparison video rather than purely a video focused around TIT. For this reason, I completely changed the script, removing all SOR2 comparisons and recorded the whole thing again so that audio now comes through both speakers. So this section of the movie has been far more than simply George Lucased! So I hope you enjoy :)
Man I can't wait! Finally the people behind the turtles nowadays are getting back to the Eastman and Laird beginnings, which we have been wanting for years...better late than never I suppose.
I'm 17 mins in & I might as well just watch the AVGN again, for the NES versions. This is like an AVGN retrospective so far. I WAS BLOWN AWAY WITH THE ARCADE VERSION. I couldn't believe seeing a 4 player arcade machine before, that played better than my 9year old imagination in 89. I do also remember that because the TMHT & NES VERSIONS were completely different obviously, & a lot of people were complaining to even the UK show Watch dog, that Nintendo had too release the TMNT arcade game on the NES because of false advertising. People had gone out played the arcade version, then bought the NES game which was completely different, letting down a lot of Europeans. & myself. Absolutely brilliant review of all the older games but I do believe you should have reviewed TMNT Out of the Shadows, I still say plus believe a lot of fans would had seen that as retro game remake,
I am 21 minutes in and I am so impressed by how much time and dedication you have for this. Thank you so much for your hard work Big Daddy Top Hat Gaming Man!!!!!!
So in regards to the hyperstone heist and your comment on that it controls the same as turtles in Time I hear this in a lot of reviews for the game and I feel like I need to point something out In turtles in time you have to walk at a certain amount of time to enable you to run. Now while you can go into the options and enable or disable this feature by pressing a button to Sprint it is very clunky at least in my personal opinion With the hyperstone heist I feel that running and attacking is a smooth transition it's not as wonky so I would go so far as to say that the fighting mechanic in hyperstone heist is superior to the turtles in Time game they both have the same mechanics but I think one handles it better than the other don't confuse me as a Sega fanboy I mean for crying out loud I'm 34 that s*** don't matter to me I'm a fan of the turtles in general but I'm just pointing out how I feel they both control
I was an Italian 80s kid, and I freakin' loved TMNT. I remember going to the beach with my family every summer, and I visited a local arcade. One of its games was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game. I always played the 4-player version with my brother and some friends I made there
This movie is right on time, Top Hat. I've been binging through many of the TMNT games and just finished Fall of the Foot Clan the other day. Completed it in a single setting. Then Shredder's Revenge was announced the next day. Thanks for making this.
TMNT is the perfect franchise to make videogames out of, especially for the 8-bit era. With four protagonists whom are mere palette swaps of each other; it's a major boon for limited memory storage.
When I was a kid, it was the only TMNT game available and I was so into it. I eventually learned patterns and finished the game but it was pretty tough. But that's how older games were, you had to actually play them to learn. Games now lead you around like a guide dog
Over the last 5 years I've really soured on the mainstream game websites. Lately I've been slowly leaving them by the wayside in favor of independent youtubers.
I had the first TMNT game as a kid and it was pretty brutal. Not Battletoads hard, but definitely had some segments that felt unfair and I only kept at it because I was a huge Ninja Turtles fangirl. The farthest I ever got in the game was the airport level and I got some kind of glitch that froze the game when I entered a building. The AVGN video didn't really talk about much that I and my childhood friend circle hadn't complained about years before. I didn't hate the game, but also didn't love it. Thankfully, the NES version of the arcade game and then TMNT 3 came out and I could get my turtles gaming fix from them instead.
I watched all 2 hours of this and couldn't tear myself away. Great job just a long trip down nostalgia road but I had seen mike matai play the rescue palooza and have been wanting to play it since. But an amazing video that's for all the amazing work!
We weren't influenced by the AVGN review. The AVGN review was just how we all felt about it, and that's why it took off. That walk over it thing...I was stuck there for like a week when I was 8.
Great video mate, very nicely edited and spliced together. In my retro games collection I have TMNT Hyperstone Heist for my Sega Mega Drive and TMNT Turtles in Time for my SNES. They represent two of the best Turtle games ever made. 👍
Excellent review on my childhood favorite! So thankful that someone took the time to explain how and why our games operated the way they did! 💯👌🏾😁 Long Live TMNT!!!
The size of the turtle sprites in the original arcade was more to do with how much action was on-screen. Also that having all 4 turtles with such large sprites plus all foot soldiers, mousers, etc with leave no room and have the screen so full it couldn't contain everything.
That was an incredible documentary mate! There are very few intelectual properties that ended up with video game adaptations like TMNT and spanning different genres and platforms. It’s first game was by the same makers of Castlevania so it makes sense that it was a 2D platform game. The fighting genre was huge at the time as well thanks to games like the Streets of Rage series but playing games like Turtles in Time was special, as you were playing as one of the four heroes. It’s interesting that although the TMNT craze did fizzle out and the Power Rangers took over, they too did go down the beat’em up route of gameplay. The difference was though, that they didn’t manage to release as many games based on the Mighty Morphin heroes. It’s great to see the resurgence of beat’em ups a la Streets of Rage again as I remember them fondly. I used to go round my friend’s house and play all the Streets of Rage, Golden Axe and Alien Syndrome games. They were great because you had to clear the screen in a cooperative way (sometimes) and although I had a SNES and loved it, the Megadrive did have some of the best beat’em ups of the time. It is sad though to see how Konami has pretty much given up on bringing or even reviving some of their most beloved games on consoles. They were huge back in the 90s, releasing all kinds of games. I’m just glad that there are people out there that are my similar age and had the same great experiences with certain games, only to do something about it. Great video my friend. Well done.
Just want to say that I think you have one of the best retro gaming channels on this platform. its a treat to watch your content. Way to go mate, keep up the excellent work
The original TMNT game was the only NES game I owned besides the Mario/Duck Hunt combo. I complained about the choices of enemies and the red masks on the cover art but I loved the game. It was difficult but I kept coming back to it and loved it. I managed to get to the point that I beat the game the majority of the time I played it. Bought it on the Wii and got to the Technodrome boss fight on my first try. I was shocked I was able to get so far after so many years. I consider it the second best TMNT game ever made with Turtles in Time being first place.
20:46 who else here is amazed by the massive leap in beat-‘em-up technology between 1987’s Double Dragon 1 and 1989’s TMNT, Final Fight, and Golden Axe? Things changed so much in just two years.
@@orenmauritzen8674 I’m curious, how do you consider it a huge leap back? It is really short, has bottomless pits, and a limited enemy roster (like DD), but it does some things that put it more in line with Final Fight/TMNT like having one dedicated action button, health item, and a selectable character roster that isn’t just a pallet swap. And although it does play slower then the other two, you can at least run.
It took many years for me to appreciate the first Nintendo Turtles game. I had my dad drive me to buy it the first day it came out at Fred Meyer. I got home and ran to the tv and Nintendo. Popped it in and said “hey wtf is this?”! I took it back to the store and waited impatiently for Turtles 2. I always found the Turtles 1 to be frustratingly hard. But the art and game style now I find to be a nice change of pace from the other games!
Any Given Saturday, 1989: I remember sitting in front of the TV, in my TMNT pajamas, playing TMNT on the NES, eating my TMNT cereal out of my TMNT cereal bowl. Likely rented from the grocery store. Yes kids, you could rent games from the grocery store. Marketing was beyond efficient.
TMNT is my favret franchise ever since I was a kid. Now I'm super exited to play "TMNT Shreders Revenge",. TMNT In Time is the best betem up next to TMNT arcade and The Simpsons arcade, and X-Men arcade, never hurd of "TMNT Rescue Poluza"

The NES was huge here in the US and of course in it's Native Japan and I loved the Classic NES 1st Turtles game. Those little robots are called Mousers , they were in the cartoon .
Holy crap, the AVGN game is almost as old now as the Turtles game was at that time. Man I feel old now. Edit: I loved the '89 NES game as a kid. I was a huge fan of the show and their spiritual brother Daredevil. Also I loved your mention of the amount of time humanity actually needs to create the future media always depicts as 30 years in the future. The inclusion of a Dyson ring/sphere was a nice touch
This is why I don't read or hold any weight for "Game Journalists" opinions. Example, IGN getting PTSD from playing Call of Duty. I digress, I loved the original release on the NES. It had amazing graphics of the time and I found it fun to play. Yes it was frustrating at times, but you learn adapt and overcome. This led to a sense of accomplishment and pleasure. Great look through history, brought back some wonderful memories.
After watching a couple of these awesome videos I think a majority of game reviews are bad jokes with the weird criticisms AVGN makes it entertaining I’ve been watching those for over 10 years lol
I have never heard of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rescue-Palooza!" before, so yes, this video was its introduction to me. It certainly seems intriguing, although it probably caters more to those who are familiar with all the old TMNT beat-'em-up games. But, if it is free to download, I might just try it at some point.
The OG Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Comic was geared towards adults and Tokka and Razar are from Teenage Mutant Ninja II: The Secret Of The Ooze (1991)
When TMNT was released on the Virtual Console it was when games had gotten considerably easier. A trend that is still going on today. I'm not at all surprised journalists didn't like it in 2007. What drew me to TMNT when I was a kid is the same thing that draws me to games like Dark Souls and Cuphead today. The handholding in video games was just so tiring. There's several games over the years that annoyed me so much with tutorial popups for the first hour that I just quit playing them. At least games that didn't have the option to turn them off. Now that I'm 40 and have the means to play any game I want, I go back to these old games that I never had a chance to play as a kid for the challenge. Don't get me wrong, I love tons of modern games. But it isn't just about nostalgia like people claim. Most of us didn't have the money to play every game. It's about the challenge for me.
If you ignore that it's tmnt you realise it's a challenging platform game with an element of strategy in the use of each turtles strengths and party management
Thank you for bringing up the positive aspects of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. It's a legitimately good game that's gotten a terrible reputation over the years. One of the biggest complaints is the games difficulty. While it is a challenging game to complete, it's certainly not close to being impossible (as many articles would lead you to believe). The game becomes a lot easier, once you learn where to pick-up the scrolls. You can also regain a missing party member, in each level, beginning with Area 3. I've been playing this game since the mid-90s. Even after all of these years it still ranks up there as being one of my favorite video games of all time.
I'm a child of the 80's and one of the things that really resonated with me from AVGN's video about the turtles games was that he said my exact sentiment as a kid back in the day. As a kid I thought that game was so hard. I never saw anything past the dam level. Konami's game was the good stuff that every kid wanted. So by comparison that NES game became the lame one just because it wasn't the Konami version.
The hive mind is crazy. I was shocked originally when I, eventually at a somewhat more mature age, found gaming-social media and how negative views of the first TMNT were. AVGN was not wrong with a lot of his criticisms, though satirical, but the game is more than the sum of its parts and also the ost is great. I still love it and play it every other year or so, heh.
I got your answer for the seaweed - Nintendo MAX controller The turbo allows for cruise control to do the stage. I have done the stage without getting touched.
Got the entire mirage comic series. But my tmnt 1 is a 4th print.. rest are 1st prints. I love the original concept that they were for teenagers not adolescents. They cussed drink beer, and actually used their weapons to kill. I stopped watching the TV show and playing toys about 2nd grade, X-Men and spawn took over
What I take from this is that videogame journalists were actually proper professionals in the 80's, compared to the "this game is hard so Im calling it a bag of unfair dogshit" writers of recent years.
Game journalists did suck it hard back in the days, comparing TMNT Tournament Fighter for NES to Bucky O'Hare, two totally different types of games. Ooph! They have no idea what goes into making a fighting game for the NES which is so rare this Turtles fighter is the only on for the system.
1. There is NOTHING wrong with the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was a much loved system with enjoyable games, that people played for a reason. They weren't graphic snobs like some people who call it a "gimped piece of hardware" putting down the NES and an entire generation of it's fans, as well as people with a physical disability. 2. LEARN THE TURTLES NAMES. It's Raphael, NOT Rembrandt. His name is literary all over the place in your own video and you STILL can't get it right.
The "more butt cheek revealing" Aska in the Japanese version was heavily inspired by Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury. That means she even has a little breat hop in her winning pose. Of course however not in the western version of TMNT Tournament Fighters.
I don't know, I always thought the original NES TMNT game wasn't very fun. Even playing it through with cheats on recently...I still don't get why folks enjoyed the game.
Let's be honest. Even though I was looking up these 2D wonders myself as I loved classic gaming when modern consoles were stripped bare of such opportunities, I always found those games to be lacking. I played many fan made games. Especially Castlevania saw a flux of homebrew titles on PC, but most were not well designed in terms of level layout and all of the kept lacking in the gameplay department. Fan made games and homebrews always lacked the polish of professional programmed games. Because of that I kept playing original console and PC games. Only when Nintendo began to bring back their retro game catalogues my interest was lit. I now keep playing and downloading official retro game compilations among modern titles. Only in today's world the mix of new and classic games makes perfect sense. No more the need to harken back to old consoles or trying to buy memory cards for the classic Playstation when most are broken and replacing the batteries on those things can be a very bad idea. Even homebrew games now are official games under the "indie" umbrella. Nobody needs to hide anymore.
Most games on the NES were balls hard, involving limited lives, brutal enemy placement, leap-of-faith jumps, loss of progress when you die, arcane game mechanics, and needing to discover hard-to-find secrets in order to get past certain levels. That was how game developers padded out the small amount of content on tiny cartridges to make sure buyers got their money's worth. (And also to sell strategy guides and copies of Nintendo Power, and then later in the 16-bit era to punish the North American video game rental market, but I digress.) Gamers at the time were expected to "git gud" and since your average NES game cost about two days' wages at the 1989 U.S. minimum wage to purchase, most gamers didn't have a thousand other games they could access at a single click, so they did get good. If they didn't put those bullshit difficulty spikes in there, you could beat the game in... oh, what's the current speedrun record for TMNT 1? 16 minutes and 36 seconds? And then you wouldn't feel like you got your money's worth. I don't think TMNT 1 is as good at handling its difficulty curve than, say, the original Super Mario Bros., but it's a quality game on many levels, and it's certainly not a "shitload of fuck" like the AVGN and those 2007 reviewers who took him too seriously would have said.

who the heck is Rembrandt? great video. I had the 1st NES game as a kid.. it was a great game for the time in my eyes.
21:37 wait, Rembrandt? Is this a running joke on this channel?
You brought back my childhood.
Love this video..great job. I'm a big TMNT fan
Great video, Top Hat! One day you should do a retrospective on the Kung-Fu series, including it's official and unreleased arcade sequels.
Excellent video man!! Just awesome!!
Retropalooza is my favorite. Playing as 60 some characters was awesome.
Yeah good idea to re-edit. Time to give another hour and half over to Top Hat Gaming goodness!
Keep up the good work fella and stay safe!
Why does he call Raphael by the name Rembrandt?
The first NES game was awesome, but that water level was pretty hard.
I'll always have a soft spot for this game since it's the first Nes game I ever played.
After watching a couple of these awesome videos I think a majority of game reviews are bad jokes with the weird criticisms AVGN makes it entertaining I’ve been watching those for over 10 years lol
Krang was in the comic books. He didn't show up until issue #7 in Mirage TMNT, and issue #1 of the Archie Comics in 1988.
Might need to censor the turtles cover with the bat hahaha amazing video!
Gauntlet had a 4 player arcade cabinet in 1985.
I'm becoming concerned as I watch this video that he's not saying Rembrandt on purpose
The one dislike is the shredder.
I heard that Palpatine line. You can't hide from me, a Jedi!
Awesome video, i can't wait to play the cowabunga collection.
Much love for the Kevin Nash quad jokes
When I was six I didn't care that I couldn't beat TMNT, I couldn't beat Super Mario, Punchout or Paperboy either. Still loved the game.
I have a modded TMNT 1up with 10,000 games on it including the arcade games.
I wish those 16 bit Turtles games weren’t so expensive!
I always loved this game. Would buy again on Switch if I could.
The palpatine references never end! I love it lol
I got your answer for the seaweed - Nintendo MAX controller
The turbo allows for cruise control to do the stage. I have done the stage without getting touched.
I can't be the only 1 who did a double take when he said Slash expecting a guns n roses cameo Lmmfao
Your a legend mate! Gonna get me some popcorn, cheers!
Mike is the AVGN. James only pretended to be him on screen.
"Shredder turns into Kevin Nash...UNLIKE Kevin Nash...."
Me: "He doesn't tear his quads 2 mins into the fight?"
My favorite TH-camr is back ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Got the entire mirage comic series.
I watched this with my girlfriend as a movie for tonight and we had a great time
You want to return to watch this, after you buy a copy of the Cowabunga Collection, just for the nostalgia factor. I know I have.
The "more butt cheek revealing" Aska in the Japanese version was heavily inspired by Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury. That means she even has a little breat hop in her winning pose. Of course however not in the western version of TMNT Tournament Fighters.
I’d love to see a video on why Raph is called Rembrandt in the UK.
I don't think he is. They are two different artists. Rembrandt was influenced heavily by Raphael, I believe.
@@mr.greenbud7126 I'm talking about the turtle, not the artist. :-P
The Arcade games were so much prettier than the ports, even in the 90's the difference was shocking.
I don't think TMNT 1 is as good at handling its difficulty curve than, say, the original Super Mario Bros., but it's a quality game on many levels, and it's certainly not a "shitload of fuck" like the AVGN and those 2007 reviewers who took him too seriously would have said.
.....REMBRANDT?!
Thanks for this movie!
I enjoy videos like this!
Such great timing for your channel, haha! 😅
