So many stories about the old Ghan and its 'relaxed' pace. One was where the conductor was scolding a woman for coming on the journey while 8 mths pregnant. She replied sternly that she was not in that condition when the train left Port Augusta.
Classic outback Australian railway journey, the real Ghan, I doubt if the driver would have had that NJ3 loco up anywhere near 8th notch on the entire journey! Seen this video somewhere else on You Tube last year. Still a classic to watch again. The new Ghan is not a patch on the original, gone all up market, took away the character of the train when the sitting cars were removed too. The new Ghan caters to "elite" tourism at elite prices. The old Ghan may have been "rinky dink" but it was one of the classic rail journeys of its time. Wonder what happened to NJ3? At arrival Alice Springs it was NJ4. Great video, thanks Bennett.
Someone asked a similar question about the locos on another Ghan film. Apparently sold off to another area still running 3'6" gauge but suffered issues due to the higher running speeds
@@timwebster8122 I was referring to the video Tim, train was hauled by NJ3 for majority of the film but on arrival at Alice Springs it was NJ4 with the train into Alice.
@@timwebster8122 NJ3 was renumbered 1603 when sold to GWA in 2006, was still running in May 2019. NJ4 suffered a severe engineroom fire in July 2011, was stored, then scrapped in 2019. So question about the old film still open, NJ3 done the entire trip but at the ending when the train was filmed coming into Alice NJ4 mysteriously appears hauling the train!
Great watch from the U.K. from someone who loves (and in better times often visited) Australia! I don't know anything about NJ locos but they look somewhat under-powered for such a heavy train, albeit upon a route with (I would guess) easy gradients. Does anyone know their output, please?
“Two Blokes and a car to Alice Springs”, love it, just sums up Aussie attitudes, laid back and straight to the point!

They were a1500 hp EMD V12 unit. Only 6 Made by Clyde Engineering in Granville. Three left alive, owned by Genesee and Wyoming
@@jimstrainsandstuff9539 Thank you for your reply and information. Happy New Year!
Is it narrow guage? It seems narrow but at other times it doesn't, is it editing of different footage or is there a guage/train change? Confused....
It's the old 3'6" line that closed in 1980. Maree was the change of gauge
5:36 I think I’ve just found George Lucas’ inspiration for the snowspeeders tripping the AT-ATs in The Empire Strikes Back
Chris tarrant followed the old route by 4x4 as it no longer travels this route
Que maravilha!!👏👏👏👏👏🇧🇷
I think I saw Adolf Hitler at 11:26 🙄
