  • @wulfbak

Jeff starts out as a nice kid who's biggest problem is that his mom is a shrill, domineering harpy. Has she perhaps thought of getting him some headphones? Or simply asking nicely to enjoy his music at a lower volume (instead of barging into his room screaming about that garbage he listens to?). It seems Jeff was a nice kid. He has a job, goes to youth group, has a nice girlfriend, doesn't abuse substances. Instead, he turns into a raving, dull-eyed religious fanatic who alienates his friends in favor of his little cult. Really, the villain of this whole film is his mom. An out-of-touch shrew with no ability to relate to teenagers.

Have you ever heard of "Kids vs. Wizards", a 2004-released religious propaganda novel from Russia which is mostly against wizards and magic/fantasy franchize. The antagonists of the novel are "The Great Harry" and "Hermime" (it's not a typo, she is called Hermime in the novel), who are not only sisters and clones from Merlin, but also Harry is, in the book, a transsexual. I am not kidding. It was actually released. And their teacher is Gandalfus Trambldore. In 2016 it was adapted into a badly animated movie which was barely shown in the movie theaters. The movie is not a faithful adaptation of the novel, Happy Potter characters are not used in it but there are many references.

It turns out that the film's writer, Karen Martin (whose script actually originated as a creative writing assignment while attending the former Liberty Baptist College), actually had no knowledge of rock music prior to doing so, thus explaining why so many of the songs cited in Jeff's sermon appear to have been named simply b/c their titles sounded sinful (the best example being Santana's "Soul Sacrifice", which is actually an instrumental!).

To be fair, Rock in the 80s courted this controversy by actively using "Satanic Imagery" in their marketing and promotional material. They understood that there's nothing that catches the attention of a teenager with disposable income like something that upsets their mom.
Really, it was stupid of them to get upset, because it was accomplished exactly what the rock artists at the time wanted. I'm willing to bet that if parents HADN'T got all upset over it, some of those rock bands wouldn't have been nearly as popular because they were trading on the image instead of on talent.

Good words. I remember a sketch of German satiric Oliver Kalkofe, who was showing a stupid clip from a religious sekt on his show in which a woman was singing a praise song to Jesus to the tune of the German Rock-popsong "Weiß der Geier" by Wolfgang Petry (the video was taken down due to unauthorized usage of the tune by Petry's manager and songwriter). Afterwards he was parodying the clip and was playing both characters, the woman and Jesus himself. As the woman he said that they want to use the devil's tool "Rock music" to take you in the ring of young believers but gets interrupted by Kalkofe portrying Jesus saying: "Stop with your brainwash crap. Let the people believe whatever they want. The main thing is that they enjoy their life, don't go on people's nerves and are nice to each other." After she disagrees he sends a lightning up her ass (or something) and says "Why can I heal lame and blind people but not stupid people?"

Sure there are good Christians out there that actually walk the walk and talk the talk. But too often they're some of the most hateful people out there that are only kind and good to those that belong to their particular sect of Christianity. I'm always reminded of a bit done by Emo Phillips on this.
"Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"
He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?"
He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!" Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912."
I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over."

Oh the nonspecific Good Time song must be unholy, it sounds like Grand Funk!😱 The Devils and Demons song now that's catchy.
I am ashamed that because my sister watched Days at the time, I know exactly who Kayla, Patch, Nick the Pimp, and Eve (the girl with Nick) are.
Actually at the time there was enough of an audience to make a religious propoganda anti-Rock film. That Dancing with the Demons book I mentioned and it's sequel were published about this same time. Also, this would have come about the same time as the Satanic Panic began and they started cracking down on Halloween. So yes unfortunately, these scare tactics were used around this time.
5:49 Being a Wiccan and having just read Gerald Gardner's 161 Rules for his coven and knowing how many of my fellow Wiccans, myself included, have thrown out a good majority of those rules, I am all for a spiritual and religious path that openly admits," Hey we weren't always right. Times change and we have to change with them. So yes our words often do change. Follow some, all, or none of these rules. Change whatever you like. It doesn't make you any less of a Wiccan or Witch. Whatever works for you."
Jeff read a book that told him to think that way...
.Jeff: Take a look at these books Protocols of the Elders of Zion and Mein Kampf. They're really interesting what they say about Jews...
Should I tell Jeff that I had a metal KISS lunchbox when I was six or not? (I thought the makeup looked cool. I think that I thought they were clowns)
We still have a record store in St. Louis called Vintage Vinyl. It's still a favorite. There also was one in walking distance of my apartment in Indianapolis. I used to love browsing through there.

Oh no, I figured it out. Jeff is the young Clay Walsh! Seeing Jeff being an asshole at the party, I haven't been this enraged at a Christian confronting his so-called heathen friends since Clay fake-defended and mansplained at the stripper!
Thank you, Mom!👏✊👍Hit him again for us!
Jeff would totally believe the Urban Legend about Hotel California being about the Church of Satan (It's not. It's a metaphor about the West Coast Music Industry and the trappings of fame)
"They were swaying, dancing, and jumping to the beat!"... That's terrible and then at the end of the concert, those crazed weirdoes stood up and started banging their hands together!
Well I think Captain and Tenniel are terrible, but not for the same reason that Jeff does.
Oh I want to play too! "I Can Only Imagine" Imagination? Not acknowledging the reality of God! Not to mention you heard Gary wnr Phil about how people shouldn't use their imagination!
"Mary, Did You Know!" Asking a woman her opinion?
"Silent Night" Not acknowledging that God exists during the Noisy Day too! And night and when Satan's demons come out!
"Awesome God!" Ugh, God's first name isn't Awesome!
Hey, Jeff isn't listening to the lyrics either. I thought everyone played the game this way.
Brad's speech about Jeff's homophobia is awesome! Total Mic drop! 🎤

"Two kids got saved." Really? And you know this how? Last I checked, that wasn't your call. But it does illustrate that for a significant fraction of America's population, the only question that really matters is, "Are you saved?" You could be talking about Albert Einstein, and say, "Albert Einstein was a brilliant physicist whose ideas form the basis of modern physics," and they'd be like, "Yes, but WAS HE SAVED? HMMM?"

@@jonahkey7406 My point concerned the absolute tunnel vision of these people, that this is ALL they care about. Plus, they have no way of knowing if it's really true or not, since a) in the case of living people, like the kids Jeff is talking about, there's always the possibility that they might reject God some time in the future, so it's not a sure thing until they're dead, and b) even in the case of a dead person, they have no way of knowing if that person truly accepted God in their heart, because they're not God. It's another example of religious people stating things as facts that they can't possibly know.

I hate that for the last decade, we have to preface everything. In this case, Brad has to open things up by saying that he's not bashing religion and the people who made this propaganda film don't speak for their religion. As someone raised evangelical, they absolutely do. Not all of it. There are decent people in every faith, and there are garbage people. But they both have to own the religion they chose. The people who emphasize do undo others and the people who say all rock music is of the devil and hate gay people are both equally christian and don't get to say that the other side of that same coin isn't affiliated with the faith. You can do amazing things with faith and horrible things. But you can't pretend one side doesn't exist or doesn't speak at all for the religion. If you say you're christian or muslim or buddhist or Sikh, you're that faith. Every person of faith cherry picks the part of their religion that they like and don't like. A lot of christians hate gay people but eat shellfish. They're just as christian as the people who do the opposite. People are individuals and should be approached as such.

I don't exactly see one side or the other and not coming from a religious background I don't have an opinion.I guess I can understand when someone who's religious says certain things are bad when they find but sometimes it can have to do with either how one interprets something or even how literally they take this stuff.R&R and various other forms of secular music have been around for a long time and those who look at it so badly are for the most part in the minority. Some songs it maybe understandable why some may have concerns but others you gotta wonder what the fuss is.As for Jeff while he's entitled to how he feels but I think he handled some of it poorly by becoming enraged at the party.
