  • In Acts 13:1-52, we witness the birth of the missions, evangelism, and discipleship. We also embark on Paul and Barnabas’ first missionary journey that lasted over two years and covered over 1400 miles in Asia Minor, specifically in Galatia. Wherever they went, they spoke to the Jews first, then to the Gentiles. We listen to Paul’s efforts to “effectively contextualize” the Gospel message through reviewing God’s history with His people. We experience their first encounter with suffering and persecution.
In Acts 14:1-28, Paul and Barnabas continue their journey. They endure increased persecution and have an encounter with pagans who believe the two are gods come down. In a speech to the Lycaonians, Paul “effectively contextualizes” the Gospel message by drawing from “natural theology”-a knowledge of God derived from His creation. Returning home the way they came, Paul and Barnabas revisit new believers to strengthen and encourage them. Finally, they make it to their home church in Antioch of Syria, where they share all that God had done with them and how God had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
