@@based_memes320 Yes! My first Slayer show was with Jon on drums during the Undisputed Attitude tour. I was just 14 years old. Jon is the 2nd best drummer Slayer ever had. He did the songs justice and should have recorded at least one album with them. I have his black Tama Artstar Custom kit.

I remember listening to this on Radio 1 when it was being broadcast and being stunned at the reception south of heaven got from the audience. I stayed in my room all day to record all the bands. Think I might still have the tapes somewhere at my mums :)
FFS man I recorded that Castle Donington skit from Headbangers Ball back in 1992, I watched it a million times in my teens, never seen any other footage from it except the 3 songs featured in the original broadcast, Dead Skin Mask, War Ensemble and Seasons in the Abyss. How could I miss this on TH-cam?!
Both amazing drummers, it's hard to say who's better. They both have their own style and technique... BTW i read in a recent interview with Bostaph, he said he played a few shows in California with Slayer before this Donington gig.
At the time of this performance Paul was the better, the pure physicality here compared to, for example, the dodgy footwork from Lombardo on Decade. However more recent shows Dave has the feet, interesting fills and a general tightness. Paul's first shows of 2013 were definitely below par but he seems to be nailing it in recent shows.... not bad for almost 50! Dave=better drummer, Paul=better athlete, it depends on what you're there to see. DC
@@diabolusdc Dave declared why his footwork on the Seasons tour was so weak. Rick Rubin at the time wanted him to sit higher behind th ekit so the audience could have a better look at him. But that made his technique hard to execute. After leaving Slayer, he founded Grip Inc and if you see videos of him during that time, he was at his peak, never lost it since.
@@realmusiciswithinstruments9915 And if Rick Rubin tells you to jump, you ask how high? That seems like a lame excuse to me. I don't think Rubin would have persisted on that if Lombardo had explained it to him. I mean he doesn't seem like the guy who chooses looks over sound. Btw. To me Lombardo and Bostaph are both excellent drummers. I will never understand this ongoing debate in almost every comments section of a Slayer live video.
Holy shit, I had the exact same experience 33 years ago. Hearing the solos live and realizing it was composed. This video totally rules. Only Slayer could wear shorts onstage and crush so hard
Love seeing Silent Scream with either Bostaph or Lombardo! The double bass is ridiculous in this song and as a drummer, it is very difficult to sustain that intensity. Oh and Tom's shorts are hilarious!
I gotta give Paul some props. Hes playing Daves parts perfect. I still watch "Live Intrusion" the At Dawn They Sleep on that home vid, is one of the best live performances of that song ever recorded/played by Slayer. You half to agree with me slightly? lol
darrin connor Paul truly raised the bar with that concert. I was there....Mesa AZ 1995. Certain tracks just light years beyond Dave's original drum track. Hell Awaits...the tempo jump after the intro. Captor of Sin was ridiculous with the fills. At Dawn They Sleep, the spam quads that he sustains at the end. Mandatory Suicide and South of Heaven were just sick. Paul just brings a level that Dave never displayed if he had it. He just always had the speed and power. But Paul always has not only those but also a level of inventiveness in a live performance. He doesn't stick to the studio track. I have been following him since Forbidden before he joined slayer. Always been a fan of his work.
@DamZZmaD: That would be awesome. In 2004 I saw Slayer during the Unholy Alliance Tour. I found the setlist and they opened with "Disciple" - I tried finding footage from 2004 concerts but I couldn't. There is a concert from 2002, however, when Lombardo had rejoined ( Live at Hultsfred 2002). There are videos of that on TH-cam - you can see him play a bunch of songs from God Hates Us All at that concert. Just look it up :). Stay metal mon ami!
@piemelbrieislekker I agree with you, their two styles are very interesting... Unfortunately, I never watched a "Paul BOSTAPH" song played by Dave on youtube... Have you find that please ? I wish SLAYER will play "Killing Fields" or "Divine Intervention" with Dave LOMBARDO ;) I wish a day in Paris or Lyon (France)...
I simply wish they will play most "DIVINE INTERVENTION" album songs live (DI is my best SLAYER album ever...). "Killing fields" to "Mind Control" : one of the ultimate metal drumming lesson ever while 30 minutes... I like also "Seasons in the Abyss" song (per example) because Dave LOMBARDO makes incredible patterns... I tried to learn each part of this song to play exactly how Dave play this and it's very interesting... but so hard !
DamZZmad is just right. Bostaph was just incredible : he played the Lombardo stuff exactly like Lombardo did and brought his own style during the Divine Intervention-God Hates Us All era. When you listen Lombardo playing Disciple (for example) he's not as good as Bostaph. Don't get why Bostaph is so underated.
I really think Dave's fills are very hard to play ; if you listen to "Seasons in the Abyss" song, you can hear a lot of differents and complex fills with a "ternary" touch. Paul BOSTAPH is a great composer because he's never easy, HE IS DEFINITELY A VIOLENT DRUMMER ^^ with binary feeling (A lot of drummers prefer Dave because he play drums with a ternary feeling). "Divine Intervention" album is entirely dedicated to the drums. I really think SLAYER was angry about Dave's split ^^ VENGEANCE :D
I've said it before, I'll say it again, Paul Bostaph has better hands, Dave Lombardo has better feet, simple as that. they should've kept Jon Dette, he's the best of both.
@DamZZmaD: That's not true, I've seen Dave play stuff off God Hates Us All in 2004. In my view both drummers are different, but very good at what they do.
@arnometallica Paul played all that Lombardo have recorded ; but Dave never want to play live the songs that Paul BOSTAPH recorded with SLAYER... Why ???
I have no idea why J.H. used a double flat in the second stanza in Silent Scream. The change up was perfect before the new double flat was introduced. Maybe they were trying to portray a feeling that was originally not part of the song. I need to investigate this further. Now, that I noticed this, maybe I my self will use a double flat in the solo as well. It almost seems as if he was about to use a dorian scale or derivative of then changed his mind. I just wish he was still alive so that I could try and understand why he did something and why.
Sorry, bro. But that's not how Slayer works. I realize I'm a little late, but Kerry just writes whatever wherever- and doesn't care about keys or anything like that. No such thing as a wrong note if you play it with the right intent, eh?
