    This is EXACTLY me. As someone who never swam freestyle until last year (age 58), I have found that as I have made (slow) progress, I can now swim confidently with a pull buoy but without I really struggle. Similarly, with fins I absolutely motor up the pool but kicking without I don't move at all.

      I’ve been in that boat too.. bouy has been a game changer allows you to focus on the arms. Whats really interesting is how B manages to articulate the details such as referencing core effect, makes huge sense but I would not have picked it myself. On that point I have found alternating sets of ten or twenty laps first with then without. That way you are training yourself to get that muscle memory in your core which improves posture and then add in the kicks, or “ballerina in a bucket” to that. With the help of these vids I am genuinely enjoying and looking fwd to my swimming. Its still hard and frustrating but with the techniques behind you its to provides structure and confidence to help you on your way. So blessed to have this amazing channel and hate to think where I’d be without it.

    Nice summary Brenton. I am still working to keep my legs up. I tried raising them while doing freestyle and felt my core and glutes tighten while my head dropped. Just another way for me to think about it. I took almost one minute off my swim time in the first triathlon of the year. Thanks for the help.

    Thank you for this! I tried these techniques this morning and they immediately changed my form and movement in the water. I also have been doing stretches for a while to correct a pretty severe anterior pelvic tilt, which I think has contributed to bad form in general.

    I've only been swimming for about a year (after swimming a bit as a child about 30 years ago) and couldn't work out why I was faster with a buoy at anything over 200m, it didn't make any logical sense to be faster when not kicking with my legs. E.g. 6:30 for 400m with buoy. 6:45 without. I've been trying to work on my kick the last couple of months, a few more things to try now. Appreciate this insight a lot. Thank you

    I had been overusing the pull buoy and fins until last Nov, when I realized I needed to try doing without them. I could swim faster and easier of course before, but without them I swam less comfortably and was slower. I just decided to go cold turkey (!) and now, some 6 months later, I feel more comfortable and confident and also a bit faster. Every thing you mention has been true for me. Thanks very much.

    When I was a lifeguard at the Y in the 70's, my training included the side-kick ( don't know if that's what it is called now) for life saving stroke. Anyway, do you have any comments on that stroke or the back stroke that's like the breaststroke only on my back? My husband mocks me for doing those as my "rest strokes". I do those to take a break doing laps. I'm 72 and swim 70 lengths in an hour. Just curious.

    I swam competitively a lot as a kid. I took up triathlon around 7 years ago, now 56. While I’ve certainly got stronger and faster with a pull buoy in the last few years I’m definitely faster without a pull buoy. Does this make sense? When I use a pull buoy I don’t kick at all.

    Kicking sets help to improve your kick as it helps to get flappy legs.... A continous 4 kick or 6 kick timed beat is more helpful to get the body position in line with the water

    • @JJBpilot
      @JJBpilot ปีที่แล้ว

      That's actually a great question, as some coaches say kick n pull on same side, while others actually say downkick opposite. Same side makes more sense I think, as it helps with correct rotation.

    If I actually engage my kick for propulsion, it feels like my legs stay high and I get a good return on investment. If I try to swim with a relaxed kick (used for balance and timing), then my legs start to sink and I lose speed.
    So anything under 200 m, I am faster when kicking. Anything above 200 m, I am faster with the buoy. Can't yet find a way to be relaxed without dropping the legs. 😞

    • @snowranger69
      @snowranger69 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use a small flutter kick effectively for distance. Just enough to keep the back end engaged.

    • @MasteringFlow
      @MasteringFlow ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the longer distances, it can help to create tension in the lower back/back of the legs to hold them up without having to kick. You can practice that by floating on your stomach and trying to keep the legs up at the surface. They'll want to sink and resisting that can create the feeling you're looking for.

    I have the opposite "problem" - I'm terrible with a pull buoy, but okay without one. Does that mean I'm doing things somewhat right without the pull buoy, or doing something wrong with one (or both)? I definitely try to follow your tips with my body position, so my guess is my kick just really helps me with balance and some propulsion that I don't have with the pull buoy

    • @EffortlessSwimming
      @EffortlessSwimming  ปีที่แล้ว

      A good pull buoy like an EneyBuoy2 helps. If you have a very small pull buoy or a really wide one that makes your legs stay far apart it could make you slower

    I am the total opposite. I can't believe how crap I am with a pull buoy. In a squad I have to get out the usual order and go off last if we're using the buoy as I'm so ineffecient.

    • @EffortlessSwimming
      @EffortlessSwimming  ปีที่แล้ว
