    I am lucky to still have my GameCube and Tales of Symphonia was definitely the second Tales game I played (with Phantasia being the first) and loved every minute of it. Playing Vesperia after playing Symphonia was disappointing. Yes, the combat was more complex and engaging, but the story left me wanting. It felt like 3-4 seasons of a show (the goal/objective is reached and a new one is introduced multiple times). Meanwhile, Symphonia has a consistent goal, rejuvenate the world, but there are multiple twists and complications that arise.

    • @TwilightWolf032
      @TwilightWolf032 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gowzahr Absolutely agree! Even the guy everybody keeps saying is the final boss, keep hyping up for the "final battle" and even have the usual "night before the final dungeon conversations" beforehand, was just another villain revealed after a huge chunk of story unrelated to him and then the story continues unrelated to him after his defeat.
      When the final dungeon reveals itself, it's not because of the player's action, it's because the REAL final boss finally acted at a very specific and arbitrary point in time. You get Undine, then Aspio is gone forever (and you can't get the female swimsuits during this playthrough anymore because of that).
      Vesperia's gameplay is better than Symphonia (makes sense, Vesperia is a more refined version of Symphonia), but the story feels very disjointed and arbitrary.

    I completely agree and think a complete remake in vesperia's style would have made so many people happy with all voiced skits with the original cast but i think the least i was hoping they would do with the switch version is do gameplay adjustments. When playing with multiple people in this game, the camera will completely hide players which is very frustrating. I would also have loved if they added the 3D running during battle in this game if it was possible much like the newer games but the way they are handling this is sadly a wasted opportunity considering how many people love this game.

I wish there were literally any QoL changes included in this, very disappointing.

There's something about that orchestrated theme that will always fill me with such powerful emotions that the theme perfectly conveys. It just SCREAMS "You're about to set out on this grand epic JRPG adventure, here's a gorgeous orchestrated theme to set the mood". Man, just hearing the first notes of the Gamecube opening is a rollercoaster, feels like I'm 12 again with my Gamecube. One of the first games I bought on my Gamecube just because of the box art. Literally never played a JRPG before, didn't know anything about Tales, just looked at the box art and went "Neat". It's also the game that taught me english better than any classes at school (native french-speaker). And it was before I went on the Internet so the numerous plot twists and turns the game takes you on... To anyone who might have never played it... Do it, get the game on any form of platform and experience this at least once. I still remember my 300+hours save files because I just kept replaying again and again until I could buy everything in the grade Shop, every playthrough trying a new build (COme on, everyone got curious about S-Genis on their 2nd playthrough!). You summed it up so well Daniel, it's always a bit frustrating to see Namco not giving Symphonia the Vesperia treatment.... Also the anime was awesome, never let anyone tell you otherwise!

    A cousin had it when I was 9 years old, and man, I liked it so much, specially when playing with him and my sister. I didn't know english at that time so I only enjoyed the gameplay and the voices. For me who only had like 2 games in the GC, in my mind, his was the peak of videogames. Years later, when I was like 14, I received the GC version as a christmas gift, oh boy, my sister and I played so much, that we ran out of blocks in the memory card. (I also remember that my cousin later gave a lot of papers, it was a guide with the sidequests, and he told me "this game is one the best I've played, it has a lot of content and it's so so good". He didn't lie).
    That game was so special, from the gameplay, the fact is multiplayer, the characters, the music and specially the story. I could speak all the day saying why I love it, but probably a lot of people know why. It's been always weird to me that in some reviews of the game weren't that good, saying things like "the story isn't new in videogames", at least for me was, but the worst thing of all, that the horrible sequel got better reviews for some weird reason...
    Even tho I still have the original, I have the PS3 version (I admit, yes, it's better in the GC), I really think I'm gonna buy it for the switch. By watching this video I was thinking "there's never enough Tales of Symohonia".
    Like some extra, the husband of my sister-in-law once said that Chrono Trigger was the game he played it so much and was the one that changed his life, then I told him my story with this game, and then he said "CT was my Tales of Symphonia". I really think this game it's that important and marked a generation

    I do wish this rerelease of Symphonia could've been an R-styled remake, like Tales of Innocence R and Tales of Hearts R. It would be really cool to see Symphonia with graphics, performance, battle system, voice acting, quality of life, etc. of a modern Tales game (with the ability for multiplayer preferably). Though I would understand if, since Tales of Arise released just a year ago, they'd rather work on a new game project and thus went with a port for this rerelease of Symphonia. It's still nice that this game will be able to reach more fans, new and old alike.
    Thanks for this technical look into the Symphonia releases. I didn't realize all the aspects that make it seem like Symphonia runs best on the Gamecube. Also enjoyed hearing your insights, quips, and personal experiences with the games.

    Tales of Symphonia remains my favorite game of all time. Having been THE GAME that put the Tales series on the map in the West, you'd think Bamco would show it at least a little more love. It's quite strange, but maybe it's a weird Final Fantasy VII situation where the formatting of it is strange enough that vastly improving it without just doing it all over would just be too much work. Ah well. I still have the game on the Gamecube (which I bought I believe 3 separate times due to issues, no regrets). It's almost as weird as releasing the remastered Tales of Vesperia in Japan only for all those years. I hear Vesperia sold entire systems on its own, and it's absolutely phenomenal as a game as well, so... Bamco is just weird.

    B. The Remaster is adding cutscene skipping for the first time. A huge win for repeated playthroughs.

    Awesome gettng to hear you nerd out over Tales Daniel! This is my favorite JRPG series. I don't disagree that Tales of Symphonia on Gamecube looks a lot nicer with the cel shading and 60FPS. It's held up beautifully. Especially if you have an HDMI adapter for Gamecube. Whilst I do enjoy the JPOP goodness of the original Japanese openings the orchestral arrangement used for the English version is amazing. Especially the arrangement which plays near the end of the game for one cutscene. The extras that the PS2 version included are neat, but sadly even though the dub actors returned. You could tell they were out of practice with the roles and sounded off. Possibly a different director too. Name changes too...Kratos Shining Bind being changed to Holy Bind despite it being called Shining Bind in Japanese and also called Shining Bind in the English version of Tales of Vesperia where Kratos is in the cameo battle. I do appreciate the extras, but none in particular stand out to make it worth playing over the Gamecube version.
    Also the Gamecube version notably has the Tech Glitch to get Tech from both paths. The Dragon in the Temple of Earth which incorrectly gives 10000 Gald making restoring a certain village easier. And if you use an Action Replay you can see the characters have some interesting unused Tech. Notably Raine's Mystic Arte (unfinished but with battle quote) she also has Dark attacks, Bloody lance and Dark sphere..which would've been very helpful as Dark element attacks are very scarce with only Summon Shadow and Adding Dark Element to weapons temporarily. Colette also has the Tech Grand Fall which is a reference to Tales of Eternia and crashes the game! If you have an Action Replay for Gamecube it's worth taking a look at this!
    Either way I have Tales of Symphonia on Gamecube, PS3 and Steam and i'll be picking up the Switch version as I want to see more Tales ports. Or localise some Japanese only Tales games already!!!! Innocence, Destiny DC, Destiny 2, Rebirth, Phantasia! (GBA version sucks)

    The North American opening reminds me of an arrangement set specifically _for_ what you're seeing on screen, like it was orchestrated live to be in sync with the video, much like a movie. The two Japanese openings...idk, they're nice, but I feel like they just don't pack the same punch. They feel disjointed, like the bands that sang the songs didn't know what they were singing to, or the animators were told "It's gotta be 2 minutes long" but weren't given the audio.
    I mean clearly they were, scenes and frames transition with the beat on specific points, but the tone just feels different. The North American opening really meshes well with the title screen, too. Like the opening feels very grand and epic, while the title screen is a much softer, calmer, more intimate moment before starting the game.
    Idk it's a tiny gripe in the grander scheme of things. I know people love the Japanese opening, and I don't mind it, it's fine. All I know is that I actively watched the opening almost every time I started the game, hardly skipped it until like my 3rd or 4th playthrough because it was just so _good_ . I think I've sat through both Japanese versions once each, and then skipped em every time. It just doesn't give me the same feel.

I will never forget on the final boss we did our first mystic art and i did Indignation judgment by complete accident, we didnt even know mystic arts were in the game. Our jaws were on the floor. Most epic ending to our childhood game.

    I'm gonna sound weird for this... But I've played and cleared Tales of Symphonia over 21 times. Gamecube version only. But never actually owned a copy Myself. This remaster may be jank; but I'm getting the CE for it because I love this game. If I have to get a PC version and mods for "True High Definition" then I will do that too. This is my first Tales game and I will never forget it.

  • @JediMastr80

    There is also 1 major gameplay problem that Tales of Symphonia had that later Tales games like Tales of the Abyss didn't have, which was the game LIMITS to 1 active Major Arte within a small window. Note: By Major Artes, I mean when the camera zooms in on the character as they say/cast the Arte.
    Let me give an example: Genis is setting up a larger Arte attack, and has finished to cast, but it doesn't trigger his attack because the boss for w/e reason gets priority and their attack works first. During this, let's say Raine is preparing to use Revitalize. The boss then uses their attack. Even if Genis and Raine's casting time was up, the game will PREVENT them from able to use their Major Arte attack since another person (the enemy) is using a Major Arte. There will be that noticable second or 2 delay before Genis's attack goes off, then finally Raine's would go off.

    Now, when you go to Tales of the Abyss, watch how MUCH faster and more responsive both players and enemies can cast Major Arte attacks. It will seamlessly move from player to player saying their Major Arte attacks right away after the camera zooms in to cast it and not have a delay like Tales of Symphonia had. I'd have Jade be using some spell, the boss then uses theirs, with then Tear follows up her spell, all within like 1 to 2 seconds. I also noticed that Abyss would purposely have some boss battles have your characters be speaking out scripted dialogue DURING the boss fight, something I don't think was used much in Symphonia (this I actually like).
    My guess, they realized this battle problem for Symphonia and made sure to fix it for Abyss, which is also when they added Free Run as well.
    I do NOT know if this was ever fixed in any of the re-releases for Symphonia. The only Symphonia version I've really played is the GameCube version. I tried the PS3 version a while back and I could not get past the low FPS. It just seems like it was stuttering to me and I didn't even make it out of Iselia for the PS3 version. The low FPS was just that bad for me that I couldn't continue.

    Alright I know I'm like a week late but I just want to point out the sales data at the start is a bit outdated.
    -Vesperia is currently the highest selling game in the series at 2.8 million units sold (as of last September, so that number might be a bit higher now)
    -Symphonia is currently at 2.7 million units sold (this was announced at TGS when they were talking about the remaster so this video was probably already being worked on then)

    Yeah this is one of those games I played a ton on GameCube. If it’s not running at 60fps it an easy pass for me. It’s going to be great for new fans if you have never played the game as the story is still one of the best in the franchise. Also I love Scott Menville (aka Robin from Teen Titans) as Lloyd it’s one of his best performance the English voice direction for Symphonia is great across the board honestly.

    For those playing the Steam version. If you use Lossless Scaler, you can play at artificial 60fps. Some moments might look warpy, but overall, I'd say it's an improvement over the vanilla ps2 port if 30fps is a deal breaker. I didn't notice any input lag in my testing.
    There's also a cheat engine table that allows many added features. Two of which are an expanded Arte set (Arte sphere) and the ability to free run like in future 3D titles.

    This hurts for me to hear that Symphonia will now be stuck at this "new" version of the game for what seems like forever. Almost like the Gamecube version of the game there was something wrong and just decided to never come back. I have the GameCube version and love it to hell and back, its a great game and I'm super happy that it's getting some spotlight after so long, it needed it. But having to play a game made back in 2003, you would think that we should be able to have a version that would run significantly better than it did back then but looks like we are stuck playing Symphonia with worse specs. What hurts the most though is that Symphonia has a legacy and fans that will see the game and buy it no matter what, which from there Bandai will see the sales and say that it was a success but in fact there needed to be a few more tweaks to really give the newest experience of the game.

    Great vid! A shame the ports have never hit the 60 of the original. I wonder if the frame interpolation on nvidia dlss 3.0 would be able to “overcome” the limitation on the PC version of this and other 30fps locked games, since it just uses AI to insert artificial frames between real frames (i.e. a gaming focused version of the soap opera effect mode on TV’s)

    Tales of Symphonia for me is the best Tales game. I’ve always tried getting into the other Tales games after it but it just seemed to fall short for me (not that they are bad games by any means). I’ve played Symphonia across all available platforms and your points made in the video are well presented.
    For those that haven’t played Symphonia yet, I highly recommend playing it. Do check a few other player reviews before dipping in for a purchase (especially if you’re looking for the GameCube version which is harder to come by). If you play it on the recent versions based off of the PS2 version, you’ll still have a good time with the story albeit with the minor gripes about optimization.

    So, ARE there fixes to all of the re-releases issues on steam, then? Or is there still no functioning 60fps fan patch/hack?

    • @Linkmstr
      @Linkmstr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can't fix them all, sadly. There won't be a functioning 60fps patch/hack without actually reverse engineering the game's code and modifying the right stuff, which would take a lot of time and effort to do. And Bamco is the only one with the source codes for the PS2/PS3/PC to actually work with and modify, but sadly chose the lazy, greedy route for this "modern" remaster.

  • @UltLuigi1
    @UltLuigi1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As an experienced vet who has played a good chunk of the series, if the Remaster is your first time getting into Symphonia, take advantage of it.
    If it's not, only pick it up if you really want to play Symphonia on your switch.
    The 30 FPS framerate isn't particularly bad, especially considering this is a fairly long game, so there's plenty of time to adjust to the controls, and it being 30 FPS tends to moreso affect the animation looping rather than the inputs themselves anyway.
    What I really want to say is that Symphonia needs a remake though. These issues with porting it more or less showcase why Symphonia needs a remake; Namco can't expect to just keep porting this iteration for another 10-20 years.

    I played the game originally on Game Cube then later on PC. I've completed the game many times already and I'll never get tired of it. My only hope for the Switch version is that it has all the content that the Game Cube version was missing, like certain Arts and cinematics.
