      @@KitKatNisa What about treating patrons like customers and people? Your first sentence is conjecture. I have not worked in the Food Service business since I was a cook at Mac's Steakhouse, 1983. The main cook Gene was a beer drnking psycho and radomly did not show up Sunday mornings and sunday lunch was insanely busy without Gene. I just could not carve the roast beef on the buffet like Big Gene but I treated everyone the same given I was 17 years old.

    This is one of my favorite scenes in the series. It feels like dust settling after a storm, with somber undertones. Especially with after everything he's done, and he's just sitting in plain sight, in public next to ordinary people and none of them have a clue who he is.

    The strangest thing about this show is that Walter never tried to build an Empire. Despite all his money, he never tried to pay off police or politicians. Yet, he always pretended in his own mind that he was very powerful. His power was limited to his skill as a manufacturer.

    • @pixelpatter01

      Buying political power is the line the writer did not want to cross. No need to wake up the rubes and cause problems. It's pretty obvious most ongoing crimes involving money could not happen unless politicians, prosecutors and law enforcement look the other way. I am reminded of this when the local sheriff and DA started busting streetwalking hookers just before elections, but didn't touch the escort services and dancer to your room business models.

    What’s heart breaking is that to me, I could see this being how Walt met Skylar. 😢
    I remember in season 1, the episode “Cancer Man” (I think), Walt told his family that he met Skylar at a bar or a coffeehouse or somewhere he would go everyday after work at Greymatter, and he would talk to Skylar who was work there as a waitress or hostess or whatever.
    The conversation probably got started a simple way to this. He was off duty, having a drink and some food while contemplating on his next move at the company. A beautiful lady behind the counter caught his attention and the rest is history.
    Here over two decades later Walt finds himself in a similar situation mirroring his past. Only now he’s an old man At death’s door. A wanted man at that. Yet here he is almost back at square one, metaphorically. Some things never change.

    The arms dealer only asking Walter for his word he won't bring it across the Border and then leaving after with just a "well... good luck, I guess" is perfectly done with the somber tone he speaks in while he's clearly quite anxious as he adjusts and fidgets his body while talking.
    He already met with Walter once when Walter went to purchase a weapon for "self-defense" and certainly knows about what Walter has done to rise to control over a portion of the drug world, so seeing him so changed now into this depressed, disheveled mess of a person while knowing what he was capable of is highly worrisome when he wants to now purchase a fucking light machine gun that he only plans to use where it "won't leave town."
    He knows some real fucking shit is about to go down and that whatever is happening is related to why Walter is a mental wreck, only feeling sorry for him and hoping Walter makes it out okay.
    The arms dealer even with the small amount of time he's shown up on screen has quite good characterization across both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
    Genuinely one of my more liked characters.

      What a cynical thing to say. She was friendly, cheerful (and quite easy on the eyes, too) and obviously wasn't making a lot of money if she was working as a waitress. Instead he didn't even react when she wished him happy birthday again as he was walking out.

No way he would've spent all that even with high cost of living due to him going off the grid. I mean... it wasn't like he was living it up on a Caribbean party-island, he was stuck in a log-cabin in the mountains for months and months. Plus he left a small fortune for his kids' college fund with that Alfred E. Neuman looking dude. He was still loaded at this point.

  • @CommanderLongJohn

    I'll Never forget seeing this for the first time live on TV. After that massive balls-out ending of S4, having this time jump scene was absolutely mind boggling. "Why's he here? Why's he look like that? Who's that M60 for? Where's Jesse?" It opened up 500 questions and had everybody on edge most of the season for 'how' Walt ends up here. I was still in Middle School when this aired, most every boy in my grade and the one above (and probably the rest above) was glued in to this show, for virtually all of them (except for me) this was their first 'adult show', with some exceptions like South Park or Rated R movies. So not only did this have adults hooked, this show had kids as young as 13 hooked, and to think this show almost got canceled TWICE, it came a rats twaught hair away from being shelved after Season 2 or maybe Season 3, which in hindsight is seriously wild. The only thing that saved this show, and made it BIG, was it being on Netflix (and that's when Netflix BLEW up).

    Only a few scenes in Breaking Bad give us an incisive portrait of Lawson, the firearms dealer. He sees himself as supplying what he feels is anyone's right to own and likes to think his customers will use the weapon for self-defense or reasonable disagreement. That's why he's comfortable dealing with Mike who he feels will use a weapon in a manner Lawson would find reasonable. But Walt is a completely different deal for Lawson, who has no confidence Walt is solid or even stable. Lawson isn't even comfortable selling Walt a revolver, but at least there's a limit to how much damage Walt can do with it. But this machine gun reveals the complete lie in Lawson's own image of himself. He's selling a weapon of mass destruction to someone who may use it for God knows what, Lawson even lamely asking for reassurance the weapon won't cross the border. He knows he's just a seller of death and destruction.

      There's this concept in screenwriting called "Chekhov's gun" where a character places a loaded gun in full view of the audience (and only the audience) in act I, then they have to wait in anticipation for the gun to be used in act III. Breaking bad does this all the time: Ricin behind an outlet, Walt buying a gun in s4, the cousins getting a free hollow point in s3. It's a narrative device used to help build anticipation.

    • @otherbrother3
      @otherbrother3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The surprise was how he used it and the aftermath. The gun was just a tool, like the ricin capsule. The ricin was originally for Tuco. Later for Gus, and finally artfully delivered to that snake Lydia.

    • @Yodah97
      @Yodah97 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That is a possible route, but there is such a thing as too much mystery. When Walt arrives at the meeting, there is tension over where he'll park the car, whether or not he'll be able to get his keys back after the Nazis take it, what will happen to Jesse, etc, etc. We can EITHER have that or have the device in the trunk be a mystery. Hiding both would've been too much. You don't want your audience juggling too much uncertainty, there's more tension when they know part of the puzzle. When they have some pieces, but no idea how they fit.
      And as others pointed out, with how ridiculous the gun set up was, the only way ground it was to show Walter building and testing the rig. It was either that or having him monologue an explanation after the fact, and that wouldn't have been great.
