Excellent rules overview - succinct and well presented I feel like I know how to play. Good review too, I try to stay away from games that induce AP, I find that to be a major fun crusher.
Excellent review as always! I'm a big fan of this game, but I definitely agree with your entire assessment. It isn't quite as "fun" as I wanted it to be, but it's always such an "interesting " experience I don't mind. That being said it doesn't get played as often as a result. One big positive point I would've added to the review is the graphic design. I absolutely love how everything you need to know is on the board. For a moderately complex game I feel like you really never have to look at the rule book as all the bonuses and actions are printed somewhere for easy viewing. Well done sir!
+Josh Walton Good point about the graphic design, I probably should have mentioned that briefly in there some where but I was worried I was going on for long enough (7 review points is a record for me I think) already.
I like the game. I do have a harder time getting others to play it. Lol I think if players use boomtown to help give focus and dont try to do everything then it can be enjoyable and not feel too sandboxy. Instead of feeling like my plans are ruined, I feel like I always have something valuable to do, like in other point salad games. The only thing over my head every turn is make sure i don't have to loot. Come to think of it, maybe a loot only strategy could work? Lol Also, the Neutrals seemed like negatives but that could just be me. Keep up the good content!
+Nelson Nexus I've been doing quite abit of thinking lately specifically about the differences between "Neutral" and "Negative" points, and it is surprisingly tricky. Neutral points are supposed to be topics of interest related to the game that either don't bring it up or down, or are easily excusable if they bring the game down abit. Negatives are supposed to be things that I think make the game worse. In hindsight I suppose the fiddlyness neutral point could have been a negative, but it is somewhat minor which is why I figured it was easily excusable. I do feel like I've been putting negative points into the neutral category for many of my past reviews and I'm trying to be more honest with myself about where these points deserve to go.
I think you are overthinking it. We play it more casually. You see what's available and roll with it. Maybe don't play it like you are trying to win a tournament and you will enjoy it lol.
Great idea, if you can find those people. I cannot. Any one I can find who will play a game like this .... also wants to sit there staring at every option until they find The Best and Perfect Move For This Turn.
I really enjoy the format of your reviews!!
Just watched this now. I'm intrigued. Thanks, Jon!
